Di Fara's square is the great. Other great pizzas are from Italy. I don't know if Dominic is still there but he was the last time I went there.
If you like thin pizza and you are in the Dallas area, I can recommend Cafe Baonecci in Frisco.

Obviously all the classics are making the lists, so I'm going to go off the beaten path here.

Super underrated, under the radar, but damn good slice - Como Pizzeria in Washington Heights. They made one of the absolute best parlor pizzas that wasn't a tourist hotspot, brick oven, or something else unusual. Just a damn good parlor slice with amazing cheese.

Of course, they're no longer around.

Like I said in the other thread, I don't really have a desire to go in the city anymore. Some of the names on here I've had and are pretty good - L&B you have to go with squares over regular slices IMO.

But another criminally underrated pizza place is the excellent John's Pizza on McLean Avenue in Yonkers.

Growing up in NYC, pizza was pretty good. Then the city (and real estate in particular) got stupid, and most of the good pizza places either closed or charge $5 a slice, meanwhile the shitty places we used to reject as kids are still open. Makes no sense. Where I am now is a similarly mixed bag. We have a go to place that's very good, and a place that does Italian/brick oven style also...yet somehow people go gaga on the internet over an overrated local place with an admittedly very nice staff that puts entirely too much garlic on their pizza, has gimmicky slices, and doesn't have their tomato sauce/tomato paste ratios in balane for their sauce.

I haven't sent foot in the city in a few years now for pizza (and don't really desire to), but NYC Pizza has a well deserved reputation as good that frankly the businesses that call themselves pizza parlors in NYC simply are not living up to. There is too much crap, and the influx of people from pizza deserts like California who think paper thin "dollar slices" are a good value, who think crap drowned in 50 toppings and named after a celebrity are "trendy," and who wouldn't know a good slice if it punched the mediocre slice they were eating in the face and jumped down the person's throat for a taste - are entirely the problem.

Pizza in general is a mixed bag for me. I *LIKE* "NY style" but also enjoy Chicago style and New Haven style. Don't give a rat's ass about pizza with pineapples on it, though. There are good pizza places around the country, you just have to be more selective. Worst pizza I ever had was in Delaware. I lived in Rhode Island for a few years, and there were some hidden gems, but you had to know where to look. There was also lots of terrible pizza largely supported by drunk college kids and poor inner city slums where people have never left the state. Randomly had good pizza in Texas once, but cannot for the life of me remember where it was.

Domino's and Pizza Hut are their own category...aka you don't order pizza from Domino's, you order "Domino's" from Domino's.

If you have to dip pizza in ranch or blue cheese to enjoy it, or drown it in toppings, you're doing it wrong.

Two Boots is the worst f***ing "NY Style" pizza place on the planet and I hope every last one of them goes bankrupt.

This has been my random musings on pizza.
This is pretty much how I feel though I am not familiar with many of the places mentioned. I grew up in the city and pizza from a pizza place was pretty much uniformly fine. I never considered it more than…pizza. If I could eat it with one hand and it stayed together, I was happy. Now Pizza is a thing and there’s good “craft” pizza everywhere I feel. But also NY has somehow found a way to make awful fast food “NY pizza” as well. Which is amazing. Even a place I went to as a kid, when I went back a few years ago, the oil was rancid or something. I can still taste the gross to this day.

I think it's either Maroni's or Alfredo's...I pulled it off a Barstool review. I would never eat anything that looked like that or had American cheese on it.

The round pies in Scranton like Jerry's, Angelo's & Sabatini's look better than a lot of the traditional Old Forge styles. I did like Arcaro's & Genelli very much...it's the only pizza I've had in the area.

Nah, it's not Maronis. I posted a picture of theirs two down from my post asking that question.

Alfredos, possibly.

I do like Alfredos and it tastes better than it looks, but that one doesn't look great.

I don't think the Old Forge pizzas are straight up just American. They have a blend of cheeses that might use American, but also mozzarella.

While we are on the subject, can we get a consensus on the fact that sausage on pizza should always be the sliced sausage, similar to how pepperoni is sliced? Can we get a law making the ball sausage illegal?

This is how all sausage pizza toppings should be.

This one’s more of a sideshow entry, but who’s been to Koronet Pizza on UWS? Not the best, but the slices are bigger than your head and you get to watch yourself eat it in a mirror.

No. Irregular-shaped wads of sausage meat are the best, followed by sausage crumbles.

I'll allow sausage crumbles as long as we also have sausage slices as an option, but I'll be damned before I admit that Dominos style sausage balls are an acceptable way to pizza.

John's on McLean added to my list...I love classic pizzerias that have somehow survived unaltered from the '60s & 70s....so few of them left these days. The Sicilian looks like the star of the show here.

Here's my list of Classic Pizza Parlors (in no particular order) that have gone mostly unchanged since the 80s. Please feel free to add to the list....there has to be some I'm not thinking of or that I've never been to.

List will be continuously updated with places still operating.

Amore Pizza --- Whitestone
Pizza Garden --- Flushing
Luigis Pizza --- Park Slope
Tommy's Pizza ---Throgs Neck
Margherita Pizza --- Jamaica Ave
New Park Pizza --- Howard Beach
John's Pizza --- McLean Ave Yonkers
Patsy's Pizza --- Harlem (pizza has gone downhill, sadly)
DiFara Pizza --- Midwood
Angelo's Pizza --- Flatbush Ave
John's of Bleecker (even though they don't sell slices).
Brothers Pizza --- Fresh Meadows
L&B Spumoni Gardens --- Sheepshead Bay
Lucia Pizza --- Flushing
Circle Pizza --- Parkchester
Knapp Pizza II --- Gravesend
Brothers Pizza --- Staten Island

Pizza Barn in Yonkers. Home of the "two foot" slice.

It's just a pie they cut to look like a slice.

It's a gimmick, but they make a pretty decent slice. Haven't been to their new location yet though. If anyone's familiar with GunTuber (gun Youtuber) OffTheRanch, he filmed a video t the old location on his family Youtube vlog a few years back. It used to be a regular pizza shop, then they started doing the two foot slices and it drew a lot of attention. You used to have to go first thing in the morning if you actually wanted to eat it there and not wait hours. I hear their new location is bigger than the old one, no idea how wait times are though, since the last time I went some hipster mag had written it up, so the move was calling ahead for pickup (and then getting it in 2 hours LOL)

Sliced real Italian sausage is by far the best imo. You had it right in prior post.

I agree that spherical sausage meatballs aren’t great.

John's of Bleecker (even though they don't sell slices).

John's Sicilian is phenomenal, but then so too is their regular slice.

Wow your list hits me right in the past. When I was younger, pretty much used to go everywhere. Love the places I bolded above.

Also going to add these to your list:
-Lucia Pizza in Flushing
-Como Pizza in Washington Heights - closed unfortunately :( no idea if they'll reopen or rebrand
-Circle Pizza in Parkchester
-L&B's been mentioned about a billion times but throwing it in again just in case the other posts got buried.
-Knapp Pizza II - I think technically Gravesend but close to Coney Island
-Brothers Pizza in Staten Island

Forgot about Lucia in Flushing....I used to take the bus from High School that would leave me on Main Street, but I always think about Gloria Pizza which was down the street from Lucia, but is LONG gone.

I didn't mention L & B because the owner changed hands & I've heard it's not as good anymore. Plus I don't think of them as the classic store front Pizza Parlor.

Brothers in Fresh Meadows should be added as well, but I know they changed owners, so I can't speak to the quality these days.

I'll update them all. Keep em coming!

End of discussion.

Also Maroni's in South Side, Scranton, is great.

Sorry, New York, you'll always be #2.
Hahaha stopppp! Maroni's is solid (my girls from Moscow), their sausage and sweet peppers is great, and it's a little unique... but it doesn't top much of what we have in Bingo!

What a name drop on HF though as I've been having it often recently.

I live in NC now but whenever I am back in PA I try to get up to Scranton for Maroni's.

(and this is coming from someone who is, as I said earlier, literally related to the owners of Sabatini's in Exeter).

My wife's family is in the Lehigh Valley and I will literally drive an hour+ north to go get it when we stay.

Crumbled sausage here, but I'm with ya that sliced sausage doesn't get enough play. One of the reason I liked Maroni's at first.

My buddy I grew up playing puck with was from that way, so I'd visit often even into adulthood. Somehow we never got to Sabatini's even though he talked about it all the time. They have the liquor/wine/beer store attached at the original location right?

I'm with @Leonardo87 this thread may get me through this summer lol. Definitely getting me through this rainy Friday.

I'm always cheffin something up at home, so happy to chat food or share any ideas for meals at home.

like me you're also from bk - cool.

what do you think of these pizza joints?
delmar in sheepshead bay
l&b spumoni
ciccio's
joe's in manhattan carmine st location
suprema pizza 2 blocks from msg
I just researched Ciccio's & Delmar. Both look outstanding! Thanks for sharing these.

Joe's has unfortunately taken a bit of a nose dive. Last 3 times I've been there it has been extremely average. No love left in that pizza, sad to say. Joe's was my favorite pizza on the planet for 20 years. Once they expanded, I guess they stopped caring.

Two of my most trusted pizza allies have reported the same experience. It's heartbreaking, almost to the point of having a good friend die.

Yep. The owners had 4 sons and one of the sons runs the liquor store, to my recollection.

I'll put a fresh pie from F+F up against anything thats been mentioned here.

I remember discussing Lucali with someone in here (their reservation process is annoying and while the pizza is good, the calzones are the best thing on their menu.)

Dellarocco's in Brooklyn Heights is really good too.
