There's some good BBQ in the area, you just have to know where to look. Texas Smoke out in NJ has been a fixture for a while.
The bigger problem is NYers don't support good BBQ places, whether because its not a huge thing here with all of the genre choices or they simply don't want to take the chance on a place they've never eaten fearing it sucks. There was one on SI that recently closed. The pitmaster there had won numerous competitions all over, including TX, and the food was excellent. Still didn't make it here. Part of that is that ALL great BBQ places are NON chain, and it's really rough for non chains in NYC.
Personally, I've been doing my own for decades. Started out with a cheap MasterBuilt smoker, but use a Traeger now.

My favorite BBQ place in the US.
They have amazing potato salad. Its like hash browns or home fries. I love that they encouraged me to take a huge to go plate. Some people say there are better places in Austin but I really enjoyed Salt Lick the 2 times I went.

NC BBQ is awesome as well....for those in the Charlotte area, I'd put Midwood Smokehouse up against any other place....

Charlotte here. I like midwood a lot, but most natives here will say nothing inside the city limits is good and you need to find some rat-hole halfway up the mountains to get "real" BBQ.

In general NC/SC BBQ > Texas BBQ, mostly because Pork is better for BBQ than Beef is.

TX BBQ has both.

Line at Salt Lick BBQ outside Austin is 200 long at 11am on Saturdays :)
I’ve been there, the Salt Lick is amazing

Sad I tells ya. Also, why is the cheese so yellow?
In all seriousness though, you like what you like. It doesn't diminish the enjoyment for me that you like something different better.
Because the cheese melts into the sauce. It’s amazing.

Thee difference is the seasonings used. Not meat. Texas uses more pepper based seasoning and dry rubs. NC is vinegar based and is not nearly as good.

And beef ribs (especially bison) are amazing. And brisket is king!

Aome pwople swear by Blacks which is near Austin as well. But for my money the food and ambiance is better at salt lick. Their seasonings and bbq sauce is the best. I cant wait till i am there again in November. I can taste it

That's Provel cheese.. Half provolone half Velveeta. Do with that information as you wish.

However, no NYC pizzeria has even been envious of a pie with Provel on it.

How dare people talk about hockey in the pizza thread.

Anyone had Mr. Bruno’s Sicilian slices? Heaven
I just googled Mr Bruno's. That Sicilian is right up my alley. Wish I was closer.

I assume you got the all you can eat. The first time I went they encouraged us to take some home. I was so beyond full that I didn't take any home. Then I regretted that dumb move all weekend. The second time I went I didn't make that mistake again. Probably took home 3-5 pounds of ribs, sausage and their awesome home fry type potato salad.

Since pizza talk keeps creeping into most of our hockey discussions & it's usually my fault, it's about time we have a dedicated place to talk about pizza & whatever else excites your palate. I know we had an Iron Chef thread, but let's make this one open to all cuisines that are either great restaurants that we've visited or meals cooked at home by our members. Try to list the name & location of the place you went to or if you feel generous your recipe if you made it yourself! Also don't forget to post your beverages of choice here. Always fun to see what everyone is drinking, especially local beers!

Since my GF's brother is in town from Florida this week, he wanted to go for pizza, so we're considering taking him to Ignazio's in Mystic or Luna Pizza here in West Hartford. I'll let him decide, as I've been to both....

Here's Luna...
