Bjornfoot literally looks like the best dman on our roster and it’s not even close. Boy was I wrong on draft day! Kid looks great. Let him eat up minutes for at least 8 games.
You know, a lot of things went into being able to get Bjornfot:
1. Muzzin played well last year...like the only plus, +/- D and he was having a very good year. Dubas wanted him.
2. Blake worked Dubas pretty good...wanted the #1 and maybe Sandin? (or even Kapanen) Talks went back and forth and thank God Muzzin continued to play well.
3. Blake came back and asked for #1, Grundstrom and Durzi...Dubas felt like he was going to win that deal, by not losing Kapanen or Sandin. (or Liljagren ? I think the Kings wanted Sandin or Kapanen)
4. Another KEY: Maple Leafs pick was looking like #26-27 for a few weeks...then dipped a little.
5. The Bruins took the Leafs out in 7 games, round 1! Thank you, Boston!
6. pick goes to #22 overall!
7. Yannetti and staff and Euro scout Christian Rutuu really liked Bjornfot.
At no point has there been a shortage of eyes on Tobias Bjornfot, the LA Kings’ second pick of the first round of the NHL Draft Friday night in Vancouver. Just as there was a constant trail behind forwards Kirby Dach, Bowen Byram, Dylan Cozens and Peyton Krebs in the Western Hockey League, there was a trio of esteemed draft-eligible Swedish defensemen drawing regular scrutiny – Edmonton’s Philip Broberg and Arizona’s Victor Soderstrom and Bjornfot – all of whom helped Sweden win their first-ever U-18 World Championship this past spring as hosts. Bjornfot served as captain for those seven games and has worn the crowns of Sweden’s national junior teams 51 times. Given his traditionally steady and chaos-free play, and his visibility, there weren’t any unearthed secrets about him as a player.
“Well, like I told Tobias, he bored me out,” said Christian Ruuttu, LA Kings Head European Scout. “And it’s a credit to him – he’s a D-man who’s a great skater, a strong skater, doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. He hardly ever makes a mistake and he’s a leader. Also, he doesn’t look flashy or anything like that, but he just makes things happen and makes everybody around him better.”
Four of the Kings’ nine selections are Europe-based (another, Arthur Kaliyev, is an Uzbeki immigrant to the United States, and another, Andre Lee, is a Swede bound for UMass-Lowell), making Ruuttu intricately familiar with a variety of players who’ll get their real first introduction to the organization at development camp this week.
Christian Ruuttu, on Tobias Bjornfot using his feet to work out of trouble:
Exactly. Closes gaps really quickly. Defending-wise, he gets his body in front because he’s such a good skater. It’s very hard to play against, plus he has a good stick at the same time, defending-wise. They said it last night and I hadn’t even thought about it, but he does remind me of Ryan McDonagh. That’s exactly what he is. He’s not flashy, but he’s still a good power play guy. His skating is so good with the puck, and he can move. He’s not going to look for the second out past. If he sees the first pass, he’ll give it to you.
Ruuttu, on examples of Bjornfot’s character while scouting him:
When you asked anybody on the Swedish team that he played for, ask who’s the leader on the team, one name came out every time. It was Tobias. It was Tobias Bjornfot. Bjornfot, Bjornfot, Bjornfot. Every single guy said that, so it’s very impressive. You can’t go around asking Tobias who’s the leader, but every player said that on his team. ‘Tobias is our leader,’ and leading a team, getting the first World Championship under-18 for Sweden, it was a very good thing – winning at home, too. But Tobias is a solid player that way.
8. Apparently, the Kings scouting staff and Yannetti had Tobias and 1 forward dead heat. Yannetti said that he knew a forward high on their list would be there at #33, but a defenseman in Bjornfot's level, would not be there at 33.
They went Bjornfot. History was made.
This kid is 18 years, 5 months old. Unreal.
Good job, Yannetti, Rutuu and Blake...and thank you, Jake Muzzin!!!!!!!! Thank you for playing well last year, when most veterans sukked and dialed it in.
