Post-Game Talk: Hellebuyck and the Paper Jets beat leafs 4-3

Freddy has been ass since the start of last season

At some point, we ARE allowed to ask for Freddy to consistently be the better goalie.

At this point he can’t seem to do it longer than 1-2 games

And this division.... doesn’t have very good goalies

.909 last year, .900 this year so far. One of the worst starters in the league. Horrible.

Here is the thing with Freddy. The 1st couple of years he was in Toronto the leafs were giving up 40 shots plus a night and Freddy was unreal, stealing games for them. Now the past couple of years and especially this year the Leafs are way better defensively and he gets less than 30 shots a game. Seems he is a better goalie facing tons of shots and being busy.

Maybe fewer shots against leads him to think too much in the net and his lack of concentration kills him. He just shrinks at the worse time. The team trying to get back into a game and there is a goal on Freddy where he just can't come up with a big save.

Sure he has a game here and there where he comes up big but not enough times. If you are a cup contender your goalie has to be on the ball nightly vs every couple of games.

so just caught the last minute of the game. marner the shinpad warrior  how did we even play the entire game? looking at the boxscore looks like we outshot them. so did freddy suck or did we have defensive breakdowns?

I think we played really well, close to dominating. Lots and lots of chances. Kerfoot and Marner missed excellent scoring chances. Freddy was the difference maker, in the negative sense. Though I was pretty frustrated with Holl, Reilly, and Marner, too. Hellebuck stole it, credit where its due.

That said in terms of defensive breakdown Rielly messed up badly on the last goal. Unforced turnover and then does nothing to cover anyone (he was deep in our d zone). Holl was struggling all night. Matthews made a really dumb deflection with his skate, like a 3ft high kick, just to deflect it slightly and f*** with Freddy.

Can I just chime in once again on how awful Winnipeg's D is? Chances galore. The forwards don't give a f***, either.

We may not win the Cup with Andy, but at least I can sleep knowing WPG doesn't have a chance with that D.

Justin Holl reminded me of that Christopher Nolan The Prestige tonight. Tonight was the AHL brother's turn to play.

lol Stephen this is so good, had me crackin up.

The Jets were comically bad defending tonight so it's hard to get too upset over the occasional mistake the Leafs made. Whether it's Andersen's fault or not, it's time to move on from him, hopefully Campbell can stay healthy and steal the net. Matthews doesn't try to make a 3 foot high kick save if he trusts the goalie behind him, having a goalie you can't trust perpetuates mistakes.
It's just a shame that so many of those mistakes ended in the back of our net.

He's a starter on a team with aspirations to make the playoffs, but he is not a goaltender you make a serious cup run with.

Frederik Andersen is like Tim Cheveldae on the 1993 and 1994 Red Wings. By the time the team is serious about contending for the cup, they've got someone else back there.

Some players have a knack for making backbreaking and deflating plays (or non-plays) and we have one or two. Andersen is definitely making Dubas' offseason decision easier.

Aside from Andersen, holy crap Kerfoot how many chances is he going to miss. He also isn't great on the PK.

Annoying game really. Leafs outplayed them but the Jets managed to capitalize on a couple opportunities they got.

While I don't want to join a pile-on for Andersen, he probably should have stopped at least one of those 4 goals tonight

Unfortunate because there isn't one goal where you say "You have to stop that" but Helly had a ton of "how did he stop that" moments where Andersen didn't have many if any at all.

Trade for Kuemper. Andersen will not be in next game. That 4 th goal insinuates lack of effort by the goalie. That’s pretty bad, he looked lazy again. He’s now a choke artist.

I really like KErf overall but get him the hell away from Nylander. So many wasted grade A opportunities. Willy looks like such a monster right now and has almost nothing to show for it.

Andy is OK but I don't see him being able to make that key save in key situations. Would be a shame if Dubas sat on his hands and Andy choked up another fur ball in the playoffs.
