Sadly, Sather dumped Torts for whatever reasons, aided by speculation of player discontent and media ruffling, with admittedly no real back up plain for a coaching upgrade and a self imposed June 30th replacement deadline. All this from a guy who gave us suicidal tendencies prone, Bryan Trottier, as Ranger head coach for 50+ games of disaster. Not optimistic for this teams "future" in the next few weeks or seasons..

just cause he hasn't told us what his plan is doesn't mean that he doesn't have a plan and doesn't know exactly who he wants

Please not Mark or Wayne.

I find it very hard to believe they are better candidates then Eakins, Vigneault, Houda, ect..

I almost don't know whom I'd like as coach. I know what I want - to unshackle the talent on the team, to play a more uptempo style, to bring in more speed and someone who can put the puck in the net. I think we need to take more chances - we have a goalie who is almost inarguably the best in the world at stopping odd-man rushes and breakaways (see his record in the hated shootouts). Who that is - I'm not sure, but I prefer new blood to a retread.

One thing everyone is forgetting is that the coach is sort of a psychologist and team manager. One of the Ranger's failings under Torts was having poor/no assistants to handle the details, the X's and O's. Maybe a Messier wouldn't be so bad as a leader, who left the details to others.

This ineptitude and lack of commitment to a plan has been going on for 13 years and counting. How much more time do you need?

Perhaps. But it's not as if things changed dramatically when Messier came back and reclaimed the C.

Well, as captain Leetch put up 50, 55, 26 (50GP) point seasons. In Messier's first season back he put up 79.

Of course the following season he dropped back into the 50s, but I think Leetch was the kind of player who played better with the A rather than C.

Either way, this thread sounds like a whinefest. 75% of the posts are complaining about Messier/Gretzky and the other 25% have been Torts apologists whining about everyone.

He didn't plan on firing him and the issues weren't media speculation.

Other than that I agree, but why would he have s back up plan if he didn't plan on firing as Torts incase aliens abducted him?

Most of the Sather hatred is justified, but some of it isn't.

Idk what points have to do with being Captain.

Damn you Sather for not announcing your next head coach in the same breadth you fired Torts with!

I guess it's inconceivable that he would want to see which coaches become available in the mean time. We should have another coach NOW! NOW NOW NOW!

I'm not hating on Sather, but in his own words or lack of them from the interview he didn't think this out.

You don't think it would impact a player's state of mind? It adds a lot of pressure.

Naturally but at that point in his career Leetch's production was going to decline regardless of his letter.

I don't think he was the best captain either, mostly because he's mellow.

I think Messier is too risky a decision if they are trying to compete within Hank's window. Some of the reporter's tweets are making it sound like he's a real possibility which is worrisome.

Im certainly not a Torts apologist.

Ill probably wind up being labeled as any coach's apologist if the expectation is to win a championship with this limited roster.

It's not about replacing a coach "NOW", he put the deadline at June 30th. The season was over for NY. Getting rid of Torts and upgrading the coaching position should have had more afterthought.

I can't quote him but he basically said in the interview that he didn't know..

Q: On the style of the new coach?

A: There are a lot of factors when looking for someone who can get us to our ultimate goal. It isn’t an easy thing to achieve. Hopefully whoever we hire has a lot of the good things that Torts has, the good things that Tom Renney has. There are a lot of good coaches out there.

Q: A new offensive style?

A: I can’t predict what the new coaches system will be like, but if you look at the teams contending for the Stanley Cup, they all have specific ingredients and I would like to take all of them and bring them into our team. There were a lot of factors that impacted how we ended up this year.

I feel like Sather is in a tough spot for a few reasons:
-He made moves last offseason and this year to make the team a more "Tortorella" kind of team.

People are going way overboard with the "Torts" team stuff. The Rangers got Nash last off season. Nash isn't simply a Torts-type of player. He's an every coach kind of player. There probably isn't a coach in the league that wouldn't have done summersaults after hearing his team acquired him. And once they got Nash they didn't have the cap room for Prust or Feds.

You ask Torts want kind of players are Torts ayers and he'll tell you players like Richards, St. Louis, D. Boyle, Lecavalier and Andreychuk circa 2004. Torts players come in all shapes and sizes and all skill sets.

The only "Torts" move Sather made was trading Gaborik because Torts and he weren't coexisting.

I actually like the idea of Messier behind the bench, however maybe as assistant at least to start. Eakins seems to be the guy gaining most interest here, however I think that is more of people just jumping on the bandwagon.

Ok after doing a lot more research these are my new power rankings:

1.) Tippett
2.) Eakins
3.) Robinson
4.) Ruff
5.) Vigneault
6.) Gretzky
7.) Messier

If Tippett or Eakins get the job I would be very, very happy. Would also be content with Robinson who knows how to run a PP.

Sather fired Torts because his team is in shambles. Devastated by injury's. His 60 million investment is a mental wreck. His superstar soon to be UFA goalie not exactly giving him an endorsement. I see and hear the same things he did with those interviews. I'm sure they spoke in detail about what needed to be done and what direction they had to go in.
Obviously Torts was not going to change a thing.
I just hope he do not do something irrational cause Mess is constantly in his ear.

I think people over estimate the amount of influence Messier has over Sather. You can say a lot critical, accurate things about Sather, but what is also accurate is that he is his own man. Right now Messier may believe he is a candidate for the job. Does not mean he is.
