My gut tells me it'll be Vigneualt, which would upset me very much. An improvement on Torts in that he won't absolutely ruin offensive talent, as we saw with the Sedins, but he's still not a good offensive coach.

The problem with Vigneault's zone matching is that sheltered offensive starts may not be the best for this team's players. Hagelin and Nash excel on the rush, not on set up zone time. It's why they don't really do too well on the PP.

That message lends credibility to the philosophy of Maple Leafs assistant GM Dave Poulin, who in 2011 told me he believes coaching now is more about the managing of players and their personalities than it is about straight-ahead Xs-and-Os.

“In some ways, I think we should call our coaches ‘managers’ like they do in baseball,” Poulin said at the time. “Players today are more prepared and don’t react the same way as players from my era. You can’t deal with them in the same fashion.”

Poulin's right. The skill is there for the Rangers, regardless of what some of the nimords say on this board. Stepan was the best player at the WJC -- look who his peers were in that tournament -- Hall, Eberle, Pietrangelo, Kadri, Schenn.

Hagelin ran the Michigan offense for two years. Nash is Nash. Kreider is loaded with top-end skill. Brassard is a magician with the puck. Richards -- when motivated -- is a playmaker with an elite pedigree. Callahan has skill around the net. McDonagh, Del Zotto and Staal have all showed flashes of bringing people out of their seats.

The team has skill. The org has skill on the farm. Torts hindered it. Renney hindered it. Time to hire a coach who will unbridle them. A young coach will probably let them do that.

The talent to achieve what though? Step outside the coaching issue for a second and look at the roster. The talent to be top 4, top 8 in the league like the last 2 seasons? Sure.

Championship caliber? Ha. Keep fooling yourself.

Yeah, we've been one of the last 8 teams playing two years in a row. But stepping from there to the last team standing is going to require at least some different personnel.

Look who's in net. I argue we're only there because we have the best goaltender in the world in his prime (no disrespect to Quick). This forward core has good secondary players but we don't have anywhere near enough talent up front to compete with LAK/CHI/PIT and apparently BOS

Sadly, Sather dumped Torts for whatever reasons, aided by speculation of player discontent and media ruffling, with admittedly no real back up plain for a coaching upgrade and a self imposed June 30th replacement deadline. All this from a guy who gave us suicidal tendencies prone, Bryan Trottier, as Ranger head coach for 50+ games of disaster. Not optimistic for this teams "future" in the next few weeks or seasons..

I hate the idea of Messier or Gretzky as head coach, but I love the idea of Leetch working with the D and drawing up the powerplay.

Maybe not, but a coach that knows how to utilize the best goaltender in the world would be a big step in the right direction. Tortorella played an awful system for Hank's talents.

I really liked the way USA played in Vancouver. Unfortunately Canada manage to win in the end. But head coach was Ron Wilson if I remember right. Tortorella was also involved ? But is Wilson an alternative to the job for the NYR ? I saw he got fired by the Leafs in 2011/12

Speaking of guys who know how to utilize great goaltenders, I think Wilson would do wonders with Hank in net. He's my choice.

I do not want to see Messier, Gretzky, AV, Ruff or some other retread. I want a guy like Tippet or Doug Weight or even Kevin Dineen . We need to add a physical presence (that can skate) to our third and fourth lines and we need another Dman. I really liked Sauer but I don't see him coming back.

You need an exceptional amount of talent or an exceptional amount of depth to win the cup. Preferably both. The Rangers have neither.

Regarding the coaching search, it only took a couple days to turn into a circus with names like Gretzky and Messier. This team is in the heart of NYC, why do they CONSTANTLY feel the need to make the big splash move instead of the intelligent one. At this point, I'd consider it a victory if Sather can say no to those 2.

I love Brian Leetch. My favorite Ranger of all-time. But the man has zero charisma. Im not sure he'd make much of a teacher.

You never know how a guy is one on one unless you personally know him. How he is on tv isn't necessarily how he is in a locker room or behind the bench.

I really, really want Moore and McDonagh picking his brain about how to bring their offensive games to the next level. If he can work a miracle in helping get Del Zotto straightened out, then so much the better.

Does he need to be a coach for that to happen?

Perhaps. But it's not as if things changed dramatically when Messier came back and reclaimed the C.

I agree, (and besides Brad Park, he was my favorite Rangers D man), but sometimes getting leadership thrust on a person is a difficult thing to deal with and I think Leetch played better when he was just a player.

Great post SBOB..as usual

People often forget that nothing changed when 11 returned from Vancouver, and his track record in Vancouver wasn't anything to brag about either...people have this image that every C needs to be a Messier type...that's not the case, people lead in different ways
