I was feeling good about the team last year. On the right track, building towards a coherent plan. After this season's roster turnover and now a coaching change....Lundqvist better pull a Cam Ward or JS Giguere because I don't see any coherent plan here.

I feel like Sather is in a tough spot for a few reasons:
-He made moves last offseason and this year to make the team a more "Tortorella" kind of team

-I don't think he had any intentions of firing Torts after the season ended until there was some player unrest "reported"... Sathers hands were tied and he had to get rid of him

Now the team is left with a Tortorella imprint and now all of a sudden we are going to get a new coach with a different system so does that mean there is even gonna be MORE roster turnover to fit the new coach's style?

The rangers only have the years Lundqvist has left in him for them to go all the way so there is going to have to be results the next few year

I agreed that Torts needed to go after the abysmal powerplay for 4 years/Bias and calling out of a few players to the media/ stubborness to adjust his gameplan.....BUT what scares me even more is who Sather could get to be coach..

It shocks me honestly that their are people here that getting Messier/Gretzky is a good idea?????? There is not enough time to let Messier get his feet wet as a coach as the players gets another year older.

The rangers need to get a younger guy to coach that thinks the game as it is currently played.... No dinosaurs from the 80s please.... Leave 94 in the past

He was playing at a level higher than Cam Ward, except the rest of the team was playing at a considerably lower level.

I've always felt that him and Spoelstra with the Heat are more babysitters than coaches. They've come into opportune situations.

Do any of you think if Bylsma had the Winnipeg Jets or Columbus Blue Jackets that they'd be much better than where they are?

well the pens did do pretty well the last few seasons despite crosby, malkin, and letang missing some serious time.

You CAN NOT hire Mark Messier to coach this team?

Why?

Sather said it himself, every coach has a shelf life.....except you can't fire Messier. Like...you can't. Messier could lead us to 10 straight losing seasons and you still couldnt fire him. He'd have to step down on his own accord.

That's not a situation you want to be in.

I don't care if Messier is the greatest coach in the history of the world, you can't have him be the coach of this team...too much love for him, it's just doomed to fail.

If Slats is stepping away from this in the next 3-4 years, he might just go with that he thinks will win here and now, without regard for some of that stuff. The man is like 397 years old.

Some good stuff on Eakins

http://canucksarmy.com/2013/5/28/coaching-candidate-profiles-dallas-eakins

One of my favourite lines which Eakins would repeat almost nightly in his first two seasons was that keeping a goal out of your own net was as important to the outcome as scoring a goal. The mantra has caught on, as the Marlies have become one of the league's top penalty killing clubs for three straight seasons - an influence which has worked its way up to the Maple Leafs

Eakins believes in a strong forecheck and plenty of offensive contribution from his blue line. He believes in mental toughness, and constant pressure - regardless of the score.

Several hundred well-trained athletes were unable to finish Saturday's famous Leadville 100 race, but the coach of the AHL's Toronto Marlies made sure he wasn't one of them. Eakins spent 11 hours 15 minutes traversing the punishing 160-kilometre course—having to dismount and push his bike during "multiple" steep, rocky climbs—before eventually reaching the finish line.

My question is do we have the horses to run though? CAn the D chip in offensively? Can they execute a PP? If they aren't capable it doesn't matter who coaches. I'm not sure we have the blueliners but I do think we can get the PP going.

Because the Rangers need some experience. Its an enormous sports market, one that needs a veteran presence imo, because the media relationship is not an easy one. Beyond that I think you need someone with playoff experience, one that has had a good team and has gone through the rigors and agonies of defeat.

The media literally does nothing around here unless you want football related items like the ability to fabricate a circus around Tebow/Revis and give players mid/post season report cards. I do not know if there is anything to ever indicate the media is an issue for NHL coaches here.

I do not think Sather/Gordon should even fathom Mess for the HC job unless he starts in the AHL with Gernander and proves he can be a good coach with useful assistants

Well every game is gonna be like trying not to look at a car accident. Just when you think it can't get worse than Torts. For the slightly older crowd, I think R.L. Stine wrote a book called "Be Careful What You Wish For" about this.

This comes as zero surprise to me b/c actually many here have said it was obvious they had him waiting in the wings for a coach or GM spot. Torts was not the right guy. Whether they fired him this year or next year his time was running out so if Messier wants the job now he'd want it next year too. And if Sather is stupid enough to give it to him now then barring a massive coronary he'd be bafflingly idiotic enough to give him the job a year from now too. By doing this now at least if Sather is imbecilic enough to go with messier we will get the experiment over with more quickly.

I can't even remember many sports coaches who have gotten jobs with no prior coaching experience. Only one that comes to mind is Mark Jackson with the Warriors.

The roster turnover shouldn't shock anyone. At least eight new faces will join the Rangers organization this year on ELCs;

Fast, Lindberg, St. Croix, Nicholls, Kantor, Noreau, Hughes, and Allen.

Between them and the guys in Hartford who are second year full-timers (Yogan, McLIrath, Miller, Jean, Hrivik, Thomas), being close to the cap, and now Cally and Hagelin possibly missing some time, some roster spots will be taken on the big club by these fourteen people and maybe fifteen if Myles Bell is brought in.

Only so many UFAs can be brought in because of the cap.

There's a lot of skill here, it's up to the new coach to understand this scenario and work on these players' attributes and how they can contribute in what way.

Do you guys really want to see Messier's legacy in New York ruined if we dont win a cup with him as coach if he gets it? ughh.. stay in the box Mark and enjoy being the last hero.

Couldn't care ;ess. Legacy is just a fancy word for other people's opinion of you. If some random people I'll never ever know or meet in my life are not wise enough to separate Messier's playing accomplishments with a hypothetical coaching disaster that's their problem

A few ave suggested that fans who wanted Torts gone should feel something akin to shame or embarrassment b/c we didn't "realize Sather would make the next hiring decision." My counter is

Torts lost the locker room and wasn't likely going to get us a cup. it was likely the team was going to worsen and Hank was going to leave therefore annihilating any cup hopes we have.

Firing Torts is independent of whether or not Sather makes a horrific hiring decision. One move had to be m,ade the other does not have to be made.

Agreed. Already bracing for the inevitable "good thing we fired Torts" posts.

Tippett is a coach who I feel knows that his job is to make what he has been given work to the best of his, and their, ability.

I really do not want to see Ruff. I really do not want Alain Vigneault. Dallas Eakins has done well in the NHL, but I consider Tippett to be head and shoulders above all of them in smarts and track record.

Edit: I meant to state "Dallas Eakins has done well in the AHL"

The only downside with Eakins is that the Marlies PP has been bad under him. In order of coaches I'd like to have it would be...

1.) Eakins

Current leafs GM wanted him promoted but Burke opted otherwise.

2.) Gretzky

Unlike Messier, Gretzky already has experience. Albeit not mind blowing experience but I really feel Gretzky could be a good coach. He's just so intelligent I'd happily take a gamble on him to see if he could get this team to score.

3.) Messier

Hiring Messier would almost be an emotional decision which is never good. Still I would rather Messier than Vigneault. Messier commands a locker room and is a naturally great leader. His downside is a severe lack of coaching experience.

4.) Vigneault

This guy is more or less the Andy Reid of the NHL... Stay far, far away.
