Callahan and Hank are the two that I'd think carry the room most, with Richards too believe it or not. They don't need that you're right. Them youngsters need to learn by example. Not by yelling

Not entirely. I do think motivators are effective for young guys. For all the **** Torts got by supposedly "ruining" players, he made some damn good talent out of guys like Del Zotto, Stepan and McDonagh.

It's names like Clowe, Nash and the ones I previously listed where this type of coach probably comes up short.

Perhaps. Nash I can see, Clowe too by just how he and Nash play. Nash is supposed to just do his thing. Score. Other guys do a lot more. But it does get fizzled out and crappy sometimes after a while.

I agree with you. I don't think it would be a good idea either (Messier wasn't very good as a player/coach or whatever he was in the early 2000's), but I don't get the uniform intense disgust with the idea. Surely MSG has done far worse things in the past. Once again though, I don't want Messier as the coach, I would certainly prefer either AV or Eakins etc. and have Messier start off somewhere else if he wants to pursue coaching.

A coach was just fired after an ECF loss and then a second round exit. Clearly the goal is to make the finals and anything else is a failure, which makes sense considering the best goalie in the world is now in the middle of his prime and on the Rangers. Under those circumstances, it'd be absolutely insane to hire an ex-player who has never, ever coached any team at any level. If this next coach bombs, we can likely say goodbye to Henrik. He'll either leave to go win somewhere else or the rest of his prime will be wasted.

Yup, yup, yup. The next coach bombing is going to create a hell of a disaster.

The thing is, if its Messier (and he gets fired), it exaggerates it even more.

I said several times I don't WANT Messier as the coach, for the same reasons as you ie not wasting the rest of Lundquist's peak years. The idea just doesn't really disgust me the way it seems to do to most other fans though. GM is different, as I can't possibly see Messier ever being a good GM, whereas it is conceivable that he could one day be a decent coach.

I really don't see it happening anyway as fans would be very angry, and probably not even Sather is dumb enough to hire someone with no experience. All I've heard is that Messier is interested, not that the Rangers are interested in him!

Sather was dumb enough to hire himself--not to mention the other coaches who came before him. This his track record, ya never know.

So now we're back to the fact that Sather is the one who creates the team. What happens if NO coach is able to win a Stanley Cup with the pieces he's been given?

We all get together and write a letter to Sather asking him pretty please to retire.

I'm referring to firing Messier on how it becomes a PR disaster of greater magnitude than say if it was Boucher getting fired.

Yes, and that's why I originally posted that it won't be only Messier fired--Sather will finally go too. And be leaving all the pieces that came apart by naming Messier coach in the first place.

Naming Messier coach is an all or nothing move. Either he creates magic as a coach and wins another ring or he's fired. I don't think there is middle ground anymore.

Could you please tell me which coaches I am allowed to like?

It is not who you like, but who is realistic to join the team AND who you like. Guys like Babcock, Quenneville, and the guys who are already on a team are not realistic. They are amazing coaches and having them would be fantastic. Can/will not happen. Looking at who is available (key word), I would prefer the following in no order:

Dallas Eakins
Paul Maurice
Lindy Ruff
Mark Messier
Guy Boucher

Those guys fit what I would like in a coach and have strong points of which would help the team grow. Each has strong point(s). My first choice at this point: Boucher with Maurice not far behind.

I actually have difficulty wrapping my head around the reality of Sather getting fired.

Someday.....hopefully......please.....

About this Mess and Gretz...

The Good: The incredibly slim chance (like Mega Millions odds) of it all coming together for a fantasy Cup win of Epic proportions.

The Bad: The idea this would even be considered after firing a coach with a cup and 2 straight trips to at least the second round.

The Ugly: Actually hiring them.

This is so asinine, that only Glen Sather and the Dolan owned Rangers could even entertain the notion, let alone actually consider it. If Rangers fans have to endure an Oiler dynasty swan song courtesy of Glen Sather in his final years as GM, (its almost fitting given his track record) then we are truly ****ed as a fanbase.

I see no positive coming from this. The Rangers would essentially be the ultimate man toy for a handful of seniors with pie-in-the-sky aspirations. Disgusting. Even thinking about this makes me want to Ralph all over my coffee table. But its oh-so appropriate given who our GM is, isnt it??.

Who knows if Mess/Gretz have been considered by management? The only rumours I've see are saying that Mess/Gretz are the ones who are interested, not the other way around.

I get the feeling that Jeff Gorton is running this process, especially now that Dreger has highlighted the names Vigneault and Eakins for the Rangers — two coaches that makes sense and would be a good grab. Haven't seen Ruff mentioned a lot (from either the 'insiders' or the fans), nor have I seen Boucher/Maurice's names among those rumoured (although Maurice, as RB pointed out, has the Rutherford/Sather connection going for him, and JR liked him in his time there).

It aint happening. Look, we just went through a week prior to Torts firing; our beat writers were unanimously saying Torts was coming back next season.

Now, they got caught with their pants down. So you think any of the NY media has an inside track on who is getting hired? They don't.

They are speculating just as much as we are. The difference is that they are trying to sell papers and Messier/Gretz are known names.

Its all a bunch of fabricated nonsense. You think hiring a guy with zero coaching experience is going to show good faith to Hank? The guy they are going to try to get to sign an extension. Yeah, I'm sure he would be thrilled.

Our beat writers are mostly garbage. Brooks is the only guy who has SOME credibility. Even he has his loony moments.

Cygralis from the Post is crediting the report to Sportsnet Canada...I didn't read Leonards article in the DN.

Though I was shocked to read Sather offered Messier the HC job in 2002 :facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

Just because Mess and Gretz are interested doesn't mean that Sather/Gorton are interested in them. I think they know that's not the right move. They'll save hiring Messier for when this team is trash again and they need to sell tickets.

Hopefully this. I wouldn't mind Messier if this was 2006. Yup much risk involved right now we've been on the upswing for years now. Messier could come in and surprise us all, our he could be terrible and cost us losing Hank and other key players to free agency, or just waste the bulk of their prime years.

This is why we shouldn't take that chance... We're in the win now mode. Need a solid choice...no shakiness

That's why I don't think they'll hire Eakins either. Vancouver maybe because they plan on shaking things up more than we do I assume.

Which leaves us with AV, Ruff, Maurice, Crawford, and Tippet (unlikely). Outside shot at Boucher.

I have zero interest in anyone but Tippet and Boucher in that list.

say what you want but messier/gretzky behind the bench would be entertaining to say the least and get a ton of attention

and if they can somehow win, well the rock star treatment just got taking to the moon
