If Sather is "forced" to fire Messier, it will be because he failed by assuming that Messier as the best fit in the first place . And if that happens, it means Ranger fans will not only have seen whatever hope has been built up until now crash and burn big time, but also that the future will look very bleak too.

Bottom line, better hope for the best regardless of who is hired.

The season is over and yet I'm still sweating everything out. Only the Rangers.

I do NOT want Messier coaching this team. Lack of experience would be reasoning (among others) why it would be a bad idea. It would turn into a circus. It would make it look that they are just trying to recapture "magic" that has been gone for a long time. That rarely, if ever, works. It sends the idea they have no idea what they are doing, it reeks of them trying to sell the fans a mirage. It's the front office mindset "Let's bring Messier back, he's popular, the fans will go for that!" that they think will hook the faithful in.

According to Pat Leonard, Messier also coached Team Canada in the 2010 Deutchland Cup and the 2010 Spengler Cup.

Perpetual average-ness, the celebration of just making the playoffs, the constant references to 94, the joke that was 98-04, the 'big name' signings and failings, the constant roster turnover.

I love this team to death, but they are a joke in a lot of ways

Back onto coaches, does anyone actually think Slats would consider putting the 'dream team' of Mess and Gretz behind the bench or is it all just media speculation?

Gretzky & Messier?

I watched 4 years of Gretzky in Phoenix. Can't coach. Not a natural leader (No he really isn't...Messier ran the Oilers locker room all those years) No way, no how. OPther coaches knew how to exploiut the Coyotes. The difference between the Gretzky years and the Tippett years here wasn't all Tippett being good. You can figure out the rest.

Messier? Could be a different story if (and a big only IF) he concentrates on leadership and motivation and surrounds himself with a staff that runs the X's and O's. Leadership and management.

(Not that I am in favor of but) I can see Messier. I can't see Gretzky.

Torts haters, congrats. It was pretty much a sure thing that with Sather picking the next head coach - and with what was available - we were going to get a downgrade; if we were really lucky, maybe a lateral move at HC. Yet you all couldn't keep yourselves from flipping a ****.

Now Torts is fired, people look at the realistic options / what Sather is likely to do, and its not lookin' so hot anymore... I am shocked. Utterly shocked. The past two days of these threads has really just been hilarious for me.
