Mark Messier is my favorite player of all time.

I can only see two results of him being head coach of the Rangers.

A disaster or a catastrophe.

Messier is assistant to the regional general manager.

Messier is Dwight Schrute.

I'm also considering Dwight Schrute for the job.

Pros? he's hard working, he loves his job, he's been a loyal employee of Dunder Mifflin.

Cons, he's an idiot.

Season two episode 23: beach day

I think that describes Messier in this situation fairly well.

Can confirm what others have reported that Mark Messier is truly interested in coaching the NY Rangers.

:help:

Let's hope Sather has the will to say no.

I want Mess, he won't take any crap from these prima donnas

There are some very smart people working in the Front Office & if those people allow Mark Messier to coach this team, I'll be shocked. It would be an unmitigated disaster for some pretty obvious reasons.

Messier can want the job all he wants but it would be sheer insanity to hand it to him.

does anyone have a list of recent coaches (excluding Gretz) who were hired as a head coach with no previous experience?

For everyone throwing out all these strong adjectives to describe how terrible it would be to hire Mess, is there any reasoning other than hes never coached?

I agree it would be a bad decision just curious if theres other reasons.

Why do I get the feeling that Sather is going to go off the matrix here?

Paul Maurice perhaps? Sather and Rutherford are close and Rutherfoird hated having to fired Maurice. Both times.

Jacques Lemaire? (Don't laugh boys and girls)

Wouldn't suprise me either. The candidates out there are just not that good, or maybe "safe" is a better option.

We got more money than anyone else. We got a great team (with some flaws). We play in the best city in the world. When we look for a coach, we should be able to get one of the top 4-5 coaches in the game. But teams have been very up and down lately, there aren't that many established names etc.

Some other outsiders:

I mentioned Brent Sutter earlier. I don't like "him", nor does many others. But we all know that he would do a good job here in NY. High up-tempo style. Physical hockey. Good defense. Etc. His bro is doing alright in LA...

He is possibly the one Id pick to be honest.

Marc Crawford got the charisma for NY. He must be dying for revench. But he had the exact same problems as Torts had after the lockout. He has spent two years in Europe, I think he would do a good job, but probably way too risky.

His teams always played hard. He knows how to run a bench and knows how to coach a veteran team. He's the best coach available.

I could see PLD's point if he was talking about an Assistant Coach but as a Head Coach we need a proven guy. This roster needs another voice and it can't be somebody that is trying to figure out how to coach in the League.

Ruff handled Hasek and finding a coach that knows how to handle a Hank should be a priority. The Rangers can say to Hank during extension talks "Ruff coached Hasek he knows how to manage a Hall of Fame goalies career."

I think Ruff is a slam dunk choice but we'll see. I though Hitchcock was a slam dunk and we hired Bryan Trottier. You just don't know with the Rangers and Sather. It could literally be anyone.

The way he handled Hasek was good, but I was always more impressed with the way Ruff handled the 3 young goalies (Biron, Noronen and Miller) until it became clear which one was the best. Ruff can be a tough coach, but he's known as someone who is able to communicate with his players.

This is unbearable! Let's just hire back Torts and stop all this Messier Gretzky nonsense!

I agree with you. I don't think it would be a good idea either (Messier wasn't very good as a player/coach or whatever he was in the early 2000's), but I don't get the uniform intense disgust with the idea. Surely MSG has done far worse things in the past. Once again though, I don't want Messier as the coach, I would certainly prefer either AV or Eakins etc. and have Messier start off somewhere else if he wants to pursue coaching.

I won't speak for others but really do you want your next HC to be learning on the job?

Lack of coaching experience is a big part of it. Not a big part, a HUGE part of it. He's never coached at any level, even as an assistant, yet he is seriously getting consideration as the main guy for the 2nd most valuable franchise in the NHL. This reeks of desperation of some sorts, I just can't put my finger to it. In fact, the idea of Messier as head coach of the Rangers is too stupid to comprehend.

Regardless, I don't think now is the time for Messier to be hired as head coach. Ideally, I envision him as an assistant under a guy like AV, who gets fired after 3-4 yrs and Messier takes over the head coach with a roster filled with young talent from top 3 picks. Perfect target for a scapegoat after the development years of the top prospects stepping into the league.

No, like I said I don't want him as the coach, I would prefer he start in the AHL or somewhere else, and in all liklihood he won't ever be a good coach anyway since star players in any sport rarely are.

However the idea of Messier being coach doesn't make me want to "vomit"; that seems a little extreme!

Richards is a head case and a disappointment but he is not a prima donna. Contrary to popular belief, the guy was not bereft of effort this season. He was absent of IQ though.

If Messier wants to coach, I have no problem with the Rangers hiring him.

To coach the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Hiring him to coach the Rangers?

I could live with something like this (besides the part with all the top 3 picks).

Messier one of Vigneault's two assistant coaches. If he shows an aptitude for it, consider him for a head coaching job down the road.

If Messier had some experience and this team was really young and in a rebuild phase, then such a move would make more sense.

But now? Yeesh.

Wait a second......Messier coached the Jr. Rangers in the Quebec pee wee tournament. He has coaching experience.
