Be careful what you wish for....

which is apparently nothing besides getting rid of the coach that led this team to their best finish in about 20 years last season.

Actually more like 14 years. It was a great result however since the Rangers got Lundquist they haven't been nearly as bad as they were prior to that, from 98-05 or so. Gaborik had an amazing offensive season that year, something which i'm sure had a lot to do with that result.

I like some of things Tortorella did, like not letting the players step on the logo and things like that. To move forward to the next level though we need a coach with a more sophisticated understanding of offense than Tortorella, which is thankfully about every other ice hockey coach on planet earth.

don't forget him getting the guys to use coasters in the lounge and wipe down the microwave...

This is what worries me. If torts was "stunned" by his firing, then that tells me that the players held these grudges throughout the year and pouted, instead of trying to communicate with their coach and work through it. If the players voiced their concerns throughout the year, there's no way torts would have been "stunned".

People with Torts' personality are almost always stunned when they get fired whether they had been told there were problems or not.

When it comes to home economics Tortorella is top notch, when it comes to the power play not as much!

Sounds like what our last coach should've done, he'd still have a job.

In all honesty I don't know much about Eakins and there's a lot of hype around him the last couple days but I'm not sure if NY is a good spot to start for any coach. Especially in a win-now mode, but the majority of the team is young so who knows they may buy in.

And while there's a lot of hate for AV and Ruff other coaches like Boudreau and Carlyle have been successful with new teams so anything is possible here. This is a big decision here and we have to hope, pray, do anything to hope that Sather gets it right because we can't afford a messup, and this is coming from a guy who hated Torts.

This is hockey in NY...the Rangers get nowhere near the attention that the other 3 sports get

Mainstream attention or not, there's still attention to the die-hards and everyone in hockey. You can't tell me that some players don't play differently here, coaches are no different. Every coach is under the microscope, regardless of whether we're on the back page more than the Knicks.

To add to it, most coaches are more successful in there 2nd team then there first. For every Byslma there's a bunch of Trottiers.

Mark Messier wants the job.

The Captain, the legendary leader of the Rangers’ 1994 Stanley Cup team, wants to succeed John Tortorella as the 35th head coach in Rangers franchise history, according to multiple sources.

Now it’s up to general manager Glen Sather to decide whether Messier, 52, who has never coached at the AHL or NHL levels, deserves an opportunity behind the Blueshirts’ bench.

Lemaire is much more flexible than people realize. The 1990s Devils were one of the highest scoring teams in the NHL.

Yeah the outcry would be incredible. Got to admit, that's part of the charm to me.

Nah, there I just gotta disagree.

The 1-3-1 trap, when we are talking about the game with a redline offside, was created to create offense. You gave away the puck, backed down, waited for turnovers so that you could counterattack against teams heading in the wrong direction. It was built on stats. Hence NJD scored alot of goals.

But, when two trapping teams plays each other, you get what we had in the NHL during the later 90's earlier 00's. Lemaire did not adjust many inches during his coaching career in the NHL. At first teams where caught in his trap, later on they didn't.

Here's another thing that has been bothering me. The Rangers might be the most secretive organization in sports. It starts with Dolan who seems to exert no power (with the exception of approving large contracts) and has ceded all authority to Sather. Then we have Sather, who is completely and totally invisible during the season. I've never seen a GM who is around less than Sather or who is less accessible to the media. Then it extended down to Torts who seems to have ruled his own fiefdom without restraint.

It Torts was out of control with the media and his own players, why didn't the GM interfere long before he did? Where was the accountability of the coaching staff to the GM? If Torts was "stunned" perhaps Sather was also when he found out the extent of the discontent on the team. And, if Sather was "stunned," what does that say about his leadership?

Trying to understand the group dynamic of Ranger management from a fan point of view has been impossible. I don't think we can say that about any other NY team in any sport. Mets fans have a sense of what is going on in the front office. Yankee fans too. Same for the Jets and Giants. The dynamic might be total ineptitude and confusion (Mets and Jets) but at least we can see it. Trying to figure out the Rangers command structure has been like trying to understand what was going on in Communist China during the 1950s and 1960s when they shut themselves off from the world with only the barest of hints coming out.

Now we have Sather jumping in and making decisions when perhaps he should have talked to Torts months ago. Spending all your time in Palm Springs or Banff when you should be here all the time just doesn't work no matter how much authority was delegated to Gorton or Schoenfeld. Where was the accountability and oversight? From a fans point of view trying to understand this nebulous situation has been impossible: maybe there was conversation but who the heck knows?

There is a lot of dysfunction here.

A part of me doesn't trust anything Pat Leonard says

Pat has never gotten a scoop on anything and the past week he has two on the exit interviews and the messier stuff. I don't completely buy it.

Can confirm what others have reported that Mark Messier is truly interested in coaching the NY Rangers.

:help:

Let's hope Sather has the will to say no.

The organization is truly a joke if Messier becomes the next coach.

I'm scared. Does Sather have the balls to say no to Messier?

Not looking forward to the day when "Fire Messier" chants rain down from the blue seats.

This could be very bad.

Or who knows? Maybe he'd be an amazing coach?

Obviously, I'd rather have a guy with experience.

Dear Messier,

Please **** off and stay special assistant to the whatever.

Love,

Your loyal Rangers fanbase.

Pretty much, of course that ego maniac wants the job. He'll do anything if he thinks he will be a "savior". I say that will all due respect, because I love Messier, but I don't think this is the time to take a chance on him as the coach. Maybe instead of Renney when we weren't very close. But now? With Hank at his best, last thing we want to do is waste four more years of his prime.

Of course someone is going to write an article on Messier. Most fans that don't know hockey will want Messier involved. I don' think Glen is going to put a 0 experience coach who is barely more knowledgeable than the guys on the ice on coaching in that position where if he fails (which he will), Glen will be in a hotter seat than ever. In fact, if Messier coaches, you can be damn sure that Messier and Glen will be removed from their respective positions within 1.5 years.
