there is only 1 man that can bring the cup back, that same man who brought it in 94, deep down we all knew that "the mess" will lead the charge to another cup victory

this time along with buddies gretzky/sather

these guys would be insane rock stars if they can win, think of all the hype messier already gets for 94

Do you guys really want to see Messier's legacy in New York ruined if we dont win a cup with him as coach if he gets it? ughh.. stay in the box Mark and enjoy being the last hero.

Mess isn't the right move. I don't think so, anyway.

Who the hell knows though?

Agree. Not sure Mess wants to do the plane/hotel thing, would love him as an asst though. We have a decent window in front of us and cant afford to blow 2 years on an experiment.

God i hate the Pens but Blysma has the perfect blend of intensity and warmth. We need that kind of guy.

And then reality sets in, when we all realize that the Rangers just hired someone with absolutely no professional coaching experience.

Hockeys different here.

And a few of their forwards wouldn't hurt either.

I really wish Rangers fans didn't bring up '94 every 2 minutes. It's really annoying, and honestly, pointless.

Messier being a '94 hero doesn't change the fact that he's never coached a pro, semi-pro, or major junior game in his life. (Unless you're counting some obscure Team Canada tournaments.)

It makes me sick thinking that about a year ago, the Rangers almost won a Presidents trophy and were two games away from a Stanley Cup appearance.

Here we are, coachless, with several top players out with injury, our #1 center possibly about to be bought out, and rumors of Mark Messier coaching the team.

This is Rangerland folks.

Would've been better if they cancelled the season.

....ah relax wilyaz. Sather won't do that.

....and if he does you guys will have something to ***** about for the next two decades.

If Messier wants the job Sather had to be aware of that fact before Torts was fired. I'd like to think if Sather was going to name Messier the coach he would've done it already. Why would the Rangers be asking for permission to speak to other candidates if an in-house guy is going to get the job? I think all of us (myself obviously included) are falling into the media trap a bit. Messier as the next coach, the guy to lead us to another cup, it's just too sexy of a story to for the press not to grab a hold of.

Hiring Messier would be a mistake. I think most people would agree on that.

The ideal scenario for the Rangers after Sather retires is Messier gets the Uncle Junior role as President of the team. A boss in name only but with Gorton running the day to day operations. Let Messier go sit at BoG meetings, etc.

With all that being said the Rangers under Sather are very unpredictable. Annoyingly unpredictable because they could hire anybody as coach of the team. Nothing would surprise me. Really who can sit here and honestly handicap this without completely guessing on who Sather sees as best candidate for the job? Messier, Ruff, Eakins, Gretzky, who the hell knows where this next month is going to take us. You would think they would want a coach named soon so they can go over the current roster before free agency. Get a feel for what type's of players the coach needs to be successful. Reading the Post article and seeing Sather isn't going to start interviewing guys until the meetings in late June....That can't be right.

I won't say this is scary times to be a Ranger fan but it's certainly uneasy times.

I would say it's amazing. But there is too positive of a correlation with that statement.

Would've been better if they cancelled the season.

I almost agree with this.

Agree. The late June thing is kind of contradictory considering he said he wants a coach before the draft. But Tippet isn't available to be interviewed until after June 30th, if he decides to say no to the Yotes - if Slats wants to include him.

We've got some great people around this team: Gorton, Clark, Hank, Cally.

Sather does not want to mess this up. It's the Rangers. I get that you never know, but I'm not losing sleep.

In fairness, it's been a while since Richards was our #1 center. And if they canceled the season you know we would have won the lottery and the Blue Jackets would be enjoying that 1st overall pick. So no, it wouldn't have been better if there was no hockey this year.

It's a carousel and poker game right now between the Stars, Nucks, and Rangers.

Other guys might be gone once the season ends too. We all know about Tippett but if Pittsburgh doesn't get past Boston, you never know if Bylsma gets canned. I know that sounds ridiculous but some have complained he's too kind to his stars and their egos.

I wouldn't push the panic button. Whoever comes here is inheriting a talented hockey club with a lot of key pieces intact.

"coachless" - I am fine with that. Coaches of Tortorella's ilk have a limited shelf life. An underachieving regular season combined wth a sluggish 2nd round with Boston meant a coaching change was inevitible (or should have been). Also, his antics in front of a mic have made us the laughing stock of the league.

"several players out with injury" - it's May 31. The season doesn't commence 'til October. Relax.

"our #1 center possibly about to be bought out" - at least we have the means to do so if that's the decision Slats makes.

"rumors of Mark Messier coaching the team" - Just that. Rumors. Highly unlikely IMO. I am fine with Vigneault, Ruff, Tippet, and Eakins (in that order).

Richards is being paid to be the Rangers #1 center.

Can't argue about pick.

Is Bylsma a great coach? He could be...but then again I could coach the Penguins.

I am relaxed. Just pointing out facts, are they not?

I've always felt that him and Spoelstra with the Heat are more babysitters than coaches. They've come into opportune situations.

Do any of you think if Bylsma had the Winnipeg Jets or Columbus Blue Jackets that they'd be much better than where they are?
