Robinson is the only legitimate offensive coach of the bunch. It's a shame the Flyers won't let go of Laviolette.
 
No Ruff

Another veteran coach that is available is Lindy Ruff, the longtime Buffalo Sabres coach that was dismissed mid-season this year. The Rangers have not sought permission to speak with him, however, and there is some doubt whether they will pursue the veteran bench boss as an option.

With the Rangers' Stanley Cup aspirations and reigning Vezina Trophy winner Henrik Lundqvist in the prime of his career, Ruff may be a tough sell considering his Sabres missed the playoffs seven of the last 11 seasons in Buffalo.

Suffered through worse things than Messier being the coach in 35+ years...should this come to be it will surely pass

Yup.

I think Lundqvist is going to be a big factor here...Glen wants to re-sign him. He won't re-sign if he doesn't feel he can win here, at least imo. This is arguably the biggest decision this franchise has had to make in a LONG time.
 
I don't think Gretzky was nearly as bad of a coach as it's being made out here.

That Phoenix team was putrid for a number of years, and his numbers with them are semi-respectable, considering it was his first coaching role. I think a lot of the disappointment from his tenure comes from the fact that he was the coach, and hopes that he could change it all around.

Not to mention, there was an insane amount of turmoil around that team between the Chp. 11 situation and Tocchet, plus Wayne's personal life at that time.

Tippett did come after him and improve them, but I think that has as much to do with him as it has to do with Maloney being 1000000x better than Mike Barnett.

That being said, Gretzky is nowhere near my choice for coach, but I'd gladly take him as an assistant if they go with AV or another older coach, with the idea that he could be further groomed.
 
I'm usually easy on Brooks. He has his moments but I don't think he's as bad as he's made out to be.

But he absolutely looks like a moron here. Forget a save or two, if Luongo didn't make many, many, many saves, the Canucks get swept.

Personally, I dont think Messier's ego would even let him be an assistant coach
 
Messier knows a lot about the game, sure, at least 80's and 90's hockey. Anyone who is a candidate for a head coaching position eats, sleeps, and drinks hockey. They are all knowledgeable, the thing with great players is they didn't have to think the game the same way as other guys did. It came natural to them, that's why I don't like start players as coaches.
 
I am certainly not saying Gretzky is the way to go for HC, but it is pretty ridiculous to assume that he is going to do a terrible job based on his previous experience in Phoenix. I never remembered those teams being particularly "great," so I don't know if you can necessarily blame him for his piss poor record. Give him a legit roster like ours (with some tweaks in the offseason of course) and some assistants that can help carry the load...ya never know.

There are going to be question marks with any HC candidate out there. I look at AV and think he could do wonders for this team, but then I look at VANs last two postseasons and shake my head. I keep reading that he doesn't really adjust and simply sticks to his system; I don't want it to be another Torts situation in which we get outcoached when it matters in the playoffs.

My opinion: Go after a head coach that is defensive minded, but with assistants that can elevate our PP and offensive capabilities. The key to this defensive coach should be his ability to adjust when necessary. Oh, and an effective breakout would be nice! Haha.
 
I know Eakins is highly rated and well liked...but I also wonder why he was bypassed by his own parent club the Maple Leafs who instead went for Carlyle ? Was that strictly a Burke hiring his friend type of move ?

Nonis (current Leafs' GM) actually was prepared to hire Eakins, but Burke wanted Carlyle.

It probably was. Carlyle is also a damn fine coach as well. Better than Ruff/AV are.
 
It's so frustrating watching what the Kings do with Quick, and knowing we have Lundqvist, and we can't do that.

That's because their system is built entirely around Jonathan Quick and fits him perfectly, while our system is the complete opposite and is probably the worst system you could possibly use with a goalie like Hank.

That's why this coaching change needed to take place.
 
It's in Sather's interest to show some interest here and make it appear like Mess has a legit shot, but it's a show and that's all. You don't turn over the team to a guy who has never coached. Especially if that guy is as iconic as Messier is in New York. That would bring more heat on Sather than he's willing to bear at this point would be my guess.

I don't think Gretzky is even an option. I could be wrong. We'll see soon enough.
 
The worst thing that can happen if you hire Gretzky/Messier is this:

When things go to the crapper, which will happen, how do you fire them? How do you fire Gretzky? How do you fire Messier, especially in NYC/Edmonton?

Dolan would probably have to bite the bullet and fire all of them, including Sather.

While that would be great in the end,
a.) Dolan would probably never do that
b.) We can't waste more of Hank's prime years with coaches like Gretzky/Messier

Hiring one of them would be a disaster waiting to happen.
