Messier knows a lot about the game, sure, at least 80's and 90's hockey. Anyone who is a candidate for a head coaching position eats, sleeps, and drinks hockey. They are all knowledgeable, the thing with great players is they didn't have to think the game the same way as other guys did. It came natural to them, that's why I don't like star players as coaches.

Spot on, and why marginal players usually make the best coaches: they had to really learn the game and how to maximize their limited skill sets.

why do we have to seek permission to speak to coaches who arent employeed?

not sure if its all the time, but often fired coachs are still under contract and still paid after they get fired. thats why you'll often see them given new positions in the organization as a consultant since they are being paid anyway

I don't know why, but I really want Alain Vigneault.

He'll implement an offensive system. Fault him all you want but that team consistently made the playoffs and were only sidetracked by a series of poor moves by the GM and also inconsistent goalie play.

Henrik is not Luongo. He comes up far bigger in the playoffs. Our defense is better than the Canucks' (when healthy of course). And with the players we have on offense I believe Vigneault could construct something similar to what the Canucks had - one of the most dangerous offenses in their hayday. Not to mention, Vigneault had a big part in Ryan Kesler's rise to dominance... JT Millers scouting report has most scouts giving him a ceiling and similar game to Kesler's.

My pick is Alain. Don't want Mess and Gretz. That would be a total PR move. Tippet would be solid but I don't think he's the best candidate. Eakins is unproven in the NHL, I'd rather let him get first crack somewhere else. Ruff would be candidate #3 in my opinion. Mid-season I was all in favor of Ruff, but that is because I did not know that Tippet and Vigneault would have a possibility of becoming Rangers coaches.

My #1 option tho is Peter Laviolette. But he doesn't look like he'll be fired.

I think many of us who watched that period would agree that Leetch played better when he wasn't captain. Don't know why, but I saw it.

I watched it too, the whole team played worse when he was captain... Was it because he was captain or was it because it was dark age crap years?

I'm usually easy on Brooks. He has his moments but I don't think he's as bad as he's made out to be.

But he absolutely looks like a moron here. Forget a save or two, if Luongo didn't make many, many, many saves, the Canucks get swept.

he did melt down in Boston...17 GA in 3 games in Boston...and IIRC he let in a bunch in each of those game early, but aside from Game 7 he was lights out at home with little offensive support.

Lou melted down in the playoffs over and over again. That team should have won multiple SC's in the last five years.

Gretzky for Head Coach
Messier for Associate Coach
Leetch for Associate Coach

Not sure if it would be great but at least Wayne has legit coaching experience.....heck if that trio could get a working PP and offense it might be O K

Dude I Posted This A CouPle Days Ago Lol

Gretzky wasn't a good coach. The Rangers aren't exactly in a position to take a gamble.

Agreed. Which I why I think this discussion is silly — for once, I think Sather's a little under pressure here. With Lundqvist a UFA, he can't afford to go with a coach that has a losing record at the NHL level like Gretzky, or a coach with no experience whatsoever like Messier. If the team fails to compete, Lundqvist will be gone, I think. If Lundqvist leaves, Sather could get the boot.

I'm expecting Vigneault or Eakins to be hired. They're the two most prominent names, and the two most promising ones, as well.

Why I think AV is the right guy.

He got fired because his goaltender could not perform in the playoffs.
Besides that he did nothing but win.

He will never have that problem here.

There is a part of me that wouldn't mind seeing this happen. Henrik gets his chance at a cup, and Ranger fans finally get a real GM.

Who am I kidding, Isiah would be running the Rangers hours after Sather was fired.

That was hardly the problem the past two seasons.

The Canucks have been scoring ~1 GPG in the playoffs the past three series. That's why. And it's why I'm split on Vigneault.

Yea, the Rangers actually scored more goals than the Canucks this season. I'll take Tippett if the Rangers can get their hands on him.

Weird to watch Brooks open a hockey article with "Bill Russell, the undisputed greatest winner in the history of professional sports," and forget that Henri Richard also won 11 titles. Or that Beliveau won 17 Cups, on and off the ice. Knowing the sport you're writing about, it helps :)

surely we are beyond pretending the Brooks has a clue at this point?

Of course. But he's been at this so long he's like crazy extended family at this point. And what good is family if you can't poke fun at em?

That team wouldn't have won with Dom Hasek in net. The Sedins smoke wood in the playoffs and the rest of the team has absolutely no offense.

People scapegoat the goalies when in reality AV can't run an offense.

I hope you are right however I think it's very possible Sather will retire as GM no matter if the next coach fails or the coach after that. Sather will still be GM if the team finished in last place next season. Dolan has made it clear he won't fire the guy. If Lundqvist leaves "the Garden" will label Hank a villain. EVERY perceived bad thing Lundqvist ever did in New York will be leaked to the media. It's how Dolan and co operate.
