Prospect Info: Hartford Wolf Pack/Bloomington Bison Thread: Part XV

Edstrom can play both wings and has even lined up at C before. He's a good enough skater, has solid hands, is very physical, and has been a swiss army knife for Rogle playing anywhere from the fourth line to the first line. And he's effective wherever. Likes to play around the net. I'm glad to see him over here and think that in the next year he has a real chance to get a look in New York.

He has also produced at a better clip on the playoffs than in the regular season for his whole career.

Nasty move, pretty nice stride for a guy that tall.

I did not anticipate Edstrom's first few steps being that good. I know it's the AHL but he got his ass in gear fast.

He's a pretty exciting prospect, awesome goal. Remember that crazy move he pulled in the pre-season game he got?

I was jelly for Detroit's Söderblom. That Edstrom tape makes me also excited.

What you witnessed was the miracle of the ahltv production staff who apparently don’t know that you won’t be seeing 14 minute power plays.

Jax secures home ice for the playoffs. Really strong team this year.
I was looking up the Jacksonville playoff situation and came across an article from a Florida newspaper about the Jacksonville goalies, two vets and Lindbom. With regard to Lindbom the author said he started slow in his first month but that his game picked up. It then quoted the Coach, "His first time in North America coming over from Sweden, it just took some time to adjust, not only on the ice but off the ice. So around Christmas time, that's when you could really see it start to click."

Last night Jacksonville won in OT, 2-1 with Lindbom in goal.

If Domingue really is with the Rangers, it's hard to believe the Wolfpack would go with an inexperienced Boyko as a backup. Perhaps one of the Jacksonville goalies is called up.

Of the Jax vet goalies,
Gahagen is on Pack contract,
Charlie Williams had filled in w Pack a few years ago.
Both have just a few scattered AHL appearances in careers.

Lindbom's had a pretty decent season. To me the ECHL isn't a bad place to start for a young goalie. What they need more than anything is games and shots and in Lindbom's case time to adjust himself to North America and North American hockey. I look at his his season as good progress made. That said the hope is he'll be able to move onto the AHL at least sometime next year.

He's already an excellent skater. As he continues to mature and gain man strength, his stride and explosion will naturally improve.

For tonight's game:

Garand in goal with Boyko backing up.

Defense same as last night with Hillman having replaced hajak and playing with Scanlin

Forwards are same as last night except Trivigno in for Brodzinski. So Edstrom and Sykoraardr playing. BMB, Barard and Rempe scratched.

1-0 Springfield after 1.

Pack looking to break in lose the puck and Springfield turns the puck back quickly resulting in a breakaway and a goal by Adam Guadette.

Lehigh Valley tied with Hershey after 1.

If the Pack wind up playing Charlotte in the playoffs all three games will be in Charlotte. Charlotte is losing to Wilkes Barre 3-1 after 2.

Still 1-0 after 2. Pack have had several chances but haven't been able to beat Joel Hoffer. Garand strong in net.

Lehigh Valley and Hershey tied after 2. Charlotte tied WBS near the end of the third period.

Although outshooting Springfield 35-21 the Pack lose 1-0.

Lehigh Valley loses so Pack finish fifth.

Springfield plays Providence tomorrow. If Springfield wins Pack play Charlotte and all games are in Charlotte. If Providence wins Pack plays Springfield. Pack have lost twice to Springfield 1-0 this season.

Kind of cool/bizarre the Pack are going into these playoffs without their best player (Brodz) and #1 goalie. However it's a great opportunity for Garand to get more reps/pressure situation in, for Cullye to be a main focal point, and for Edstrom (and to a lesser extent Sykora who is still a teenager) to keep getting acclimated to the rink size and NA pace.

Any news on if Robertson is coming back?

Also, did the rules change or has it just been that long since the Pack made the playoffs I forgot? Can they just juggle those four up and down and "call up" guys like BMB and Boyko who are AHL Taxi Squaders at this point?

The "Black Aces," the guys that get called up from the AHL as emergency options for the NHL club, has been a thing in some form for as long as I've been alive. So, for a while at least, LOL.

Boyko is there because he already signed his NHL entry level contract and the Rangers just reassigned him to Hartford after his WHL season ended. BMB is eligible because his CHL season is over so the rule that precludes him from playing in the AHL as a CHL draftee at age 18, no longer applies. This is also standard practice in both cases. Same things in general for Sykora, Edstrom, etc.

I think it's just that it's been a while for Hartford. If Hartford goes out quickly and the Rangers are still alive you'll probably see a couple extra guys like Carpenter or Zac Jones come up with the Black Aces as well.

My main question is: can they hold off on any callups for now and use them later, or can they send guys back and forth?

I get why Edstrom, Sykora, BMB, etc. are with the Pack and it's great experience. But can in theory they start the post season for the Rangers with no callups and use them later?

Take Johnny Brodz and Domingue as examples. I'd figure the team would want them available to play in the AHL playoffs and give the Pack a stacked roster. If they need 1-2 guys they can call them up on Wednesday, next week, etc.

Or a guy like BMB who probably isn't getting any playoff action with the Pack. He can start as a designated Rangers callup and if the big club needs someone, they can send him back to Hartford and call up a Johnny Brodz or Cullye.

Robertson listed as week to week with upper body injury.

I'm not sure if they can move freely back and forth. Even if they could I don't think the NHL teams would really want to do that since the Black Aces are there as injury/illness protection. If you send Brodzinski to play in Hartford's opener and he gets hurt, then you lost your top choice as a Black Ace.
