Saw the game. My observations.

*With all due respect, I would certainly not say that Vitaly Kravtsov is sulking in any way. Is he dominating? Definitely not. But this is the AHL, it’s a special/different league. So often if you pass the puck, you are not getting it back. Someone like Kravy will approach the offensive game as a process, try to set in motion certain things to get openings and high quality opportunities. For him it’s of course very disrupting if he pass the puck to an ORegan out by the far board’s and then gets open, if O’Reagan only has one thought in his head which is to put the puck on the net from a bad angle on an unscreened goalie — despite Kravy getting open. If you want to put up a lot of pts, the best way is to be a shooter. Let other do the dirty work and stand in open ice with you stick in the air. With that said, it’s not a waste for Kravy to play in the AHL. Even if it’s very different than the NHL, it’s still a crash course on what he has to adjust from the KHL.

Kravy played on the 2nd line with Belesky and OReagan and on the point on the 2nd PP unit (left point in an LHS shooter role, like Elias Pettersson does). He made some good plays and was OK for sure. Even good, and he improved as the game went on.

For him to become one of the top AHL players he will need people that gets him the puck a lot. I don’t think that is in the cards. But I think he is improving rapidly and will soon become a clear top 4-5 forward for that team, which is perfectly fine from my POV for a 20 y/o in a league that he isn’t built for.

But a little more confidence will do wonders for him. He isn’t having the marginals with him in all situations. It will come.

*I think Chytil played really well. He is a bit different player in the AHL, plays a lot more assertive than in the NHL and with more confidence.

I do however think he is better off staying in the AHL than being called up because we have a hole in NY. The NHL game is really fast. It’s hard for a big center. You need to really control things. If things don’t your lines way, you will be stuck chasing back and forth the length of the ice and that is a hard task. The kid has played a lot in a smaller role lately. It’s good for him to play in a No 1 center role for a longer stretch. It’s those things he needs to practice on the most.

*Shestorkin. During the last lockout I saw NHL goalie Jonas Enroth play a game at a very low level. A revelation for me was how ridiculously fast he read the game. Like he moved post to post to save a onetimer before the cross ice pass was made. Often just stood waiting for people to shoot the puck into an area he knew it was coming too. He made like 40 saves look beyond easy.

Shesty wasn’t quite at that level in this game, but it looked ‘easy’.

*have to go, but more later! ;)

So, with Kravtsov, would you deem his current play as something somewhere between "learning" and "adjusting"?
