WP site lists Tokarski as #1 and Mazanec as #2. Not starter/backup but their sweater numbers. If that is actually correct, it's bizarre.

EA NHL is not for real. It’s a simulated game. It’s nice and all to have a better shooting angle when you’re in the offensive zone. That’s where the good stuff of being a defenseman on the wrong side ends. Some particular concerns in your own defensive zone—you’ll much more often have to turn your back leaving you open to not seeing hits coming your way. Another issue already pointed out above is being on your backhand a lot. An offside defenseman is a lot more vulnerable than one who’s not.

I like making short little backhand passes. Also when defending your stick is towards the middle of the ice making it better to defend against dangerous attacks through the middle and less chance you get hooking call against you when somebody tries to go around you near the boards. Basically there are about as many situations where it is more beneficial as those where it is less beneficial.

So why, then--in real life!--do you think defenders almost exclusively prefer playing on their dominant-handed side, and almost always only play on their off-side when there aren't enough of lefties or righties to have an even split? I mean, by your video game logic you'd expect to see a bunch of guys playing wherever, just because.

they don't almost exclusively prefer "dominant" side, you just don't hear about it because it is not a big deal like some try to make it out to be.

Defenders should play on the side of their handedness.

When you are a right-handed defenseman on the right side of the ice breaking out of your own zone, the entire ice is open to you to make a pass on your forehand, whereas on the left side only the space between you and the boards is open, and to make a pass anywhere else you would have to turn your body position to face that way. Similarly in the offensive zone it is easier to keep the puck in at the blue line when it comes around the boards on your forehand, and then make a pass or shoot immediately without having to turn your body position. All of this makes life a lot easier when playing at NHL speed where it's the fractions of a second that can make all the difference.

Mazanec also wore # 2 last year, must be a huge Leetch fan lol... but yes, sweater number combo is bizarre/funny.

I think players should go the fun route in the AHL... Tokarski 69 and Mazanec 2... a sight for sore eyes haha

This is just incorrect, but NHL video games have led you to believe otherwise, so I'll leave it there.

Well, I'll ask one more question. You see lots of LHD playing the right side, because there are substantially more left-handed shots in hockey. So, that makes sense--if you have 4 LHD and 2 RHD, one of those lefties will have to play the right. But, why do you not see RHD playing the left side, out of preference? And we can talk from any level from Midget to NHL.

Damn, y’all still taking the bait on that trollpost trying to equate NHL hockey with a video game? That’s probably his most subtle troll yet.

But in the video game it works so the Rangers should just do the same hahaha.

Another bizarre thing... both Toronto goalies McElhinney and Pickard were claimed off waivers (Carolina, Flyers, respect.) on their way down to the AHL Toronto Marlies. Talking about a low-blow to the goalie depth... :-0

Noticed a lot of low numbers. Is that a mccambridge thing? Gettinger switched to 7. Lias to 28 Meskanen went from 81 to 18.

Day kept 74.

Kind of interesting

Yeah last year for a handful of games. But he’s wearing 50 at nhl level. You’d think he’d do the same there

AHLTV is doing a free weekend pass for anyone wanting to watch opening weekend. Hartford opens up at home against Providence on Oct. 5 and home against Laval on Oct. 7. I think this'll give a good perspective to the quality the games are shot in. Fingers crossed!!

Link is below for anyone interested. It's free to sign up!!

Hope the quality will be better with a new distributor.

They are 2 seasoned vets... no need to ride either into the ground or one of them to play 60 games... unless the other one totally collapses.

I think they'll split the games this year. Both are capable starters in the AHL and I think they both had bad showings in preseason games.

Just a thought of ex NYR Marty Biron on Toronto losing both of their AHL goalies today:

Quick thought on the Leafs losing both goalies on waivers today. Why put them on waivers at the same time?? Put Pickard on last week and if he gets picked up you can look to trade McElhinney and get an AHL goalie in return. Leafs waited so long and got screwed.

something that might seem more difficult to most, can be actually easier for some. And most Right Shooting players are actually lefties or ambidextrous because when skating with one hand on the stick they hold it in their dominant hand. Lefties make up only about 10% of the population, so therefore many right handed, left shooting dmen will always be comfortable playing the right side because they are used to it because there are not enough lefties in the world.
