Has Lemieux been trending up at least? Passed the eye test the past few games and led the team in Corsi and was 2nd in xGF% today.

Well this game wasn't included because the regression would take time... but I have this from Jan 22:

Helle had a nice game - made some really tough saves and kept us in it.

One other call out -
Myers looks good IMO - lots better than earlier in the season and playing with confidence.

I am “process-oriented”. Doesn’t mean I don’t care about results - it means I use the health of a process - not of its results - to predict the next results coming out of that process.

For example: the Jets just won. But the dysfunction on display in their current top two lines - coupled with an atrocious PP1 - is, to me, an example of a process in need of serious repair.

We got a good result today...from a bad process. To win a cup, I feel, still requires significant change.

I gotta give Kudos to Little. Considering some on here had him washed up and finished, he is one point behind Laine for points and in 5th place for scoring on the team and tied for 38th for centers....almost a 1C as far as points go. If Laine were playing better, Little might be in the top 31 in scoring for centers.

Kudos to Myers.....he has really cut down on his D zone blunders.

Because some people need reminding.

That last negative stretch was with our top 2 defensemen and top winger out injured for a while.

Yeah, we're not playing well, but we're 2 points up on NSH with 2 games in hand, have the best GD in the division, and NSH just lost two games to the Blues.

I try to enjoy historically good NHL seasons for what they are, not what I wished they were.

Top winger? Blake Wheeler didn't play?

  • Connor Hellebuyck kept the Jets in the game until the top line finally struck a chord and came out roaring in the third period just after the 50 minute mark and showed why Maurice keeps leaning on them very heavily. It wasn't a pretty win by any means, but it certainly was earned - and desperately needed.
  • Connor-Scheifele-Wheeler definitely struggled for the majority of the game, but Paul Maurice kept rolling them out and it finally turned into gold for Wheeler's goal (there was a pick involved from Scheifele, but the refs turned a blind eye towards it or didn't see it). That being said, I definitely don't want to ignore that they were still bleeding a lot of shots - Kyle Connor especially, getting stuck on the ice a little too much after his stint of being on the PK or what have you. Nevertheless, it took them a bit too long to get going but when they did they poured it on.
  • Laine-Little-Roslovic got very little ice time today, partly because of the amount of penalties the Jets were taking, and partly because of Laine being stapled to the bench at the 15 minute mark in the third. Laine is still fighting the puck, and hasn't grooved with Little since forever ago. Little and Roslovic themselves keep doing their jobs and commit errors of their own, but Laine is certainly attracting the most attention and I don't think he fits in Maurice's ideal top-6 at the moment. Again, this is where I would love to have a top-9 mindset and be able to saddle Laine with Lowry and Perreault or Copp for more controlled possession with the best defensive forwards on the team, but Laine is going to have to solve this one on his own, it seems.
  • Speaking of which, Perreault-Lowry-Tanev were average tonight, Lowry doing his job in winning the majority of his faceoffs and controlling the dangerous shots against and contributing some of their own (missed tap ins and blocked shots from the slot stand out in my mind). A better performance for a line that has been struggling for extended periods of time, lately.
  • Appleton-Copp-Lemieux - everyone has been throwing love to Copp lately, so let me just pour on some more. He has been outstanding as an ideal 4th line centre lately and should be cementing himself as a staple in the Jets future (until Seattle comes around and messes everything up). Regardless, his shorty was because of great positioning (yet again) and the 4th line itself saw minimal action when they were on the ice, but were on the right side of 50%. Funny what happens when you give trust to a line to play more than 6 minutes a game...
  • Morrissey-Trouba were great tonight and the sequence at the end was majorly because of them holding the puck in or giving themselves more room to make passes (or in Scheifele's case, picking someone off to give Morrissey more room). Still, the top line of the Sabres are no joke as we clearly see with Eichel and Skinner, and they held them to the expired-PK goal where Eichel sniped it. All-around great play.
  • Looks like I'm combining the bottom two pairings again, because all four of Chiarot, Byfuglien, Morrow, and Myers struggled pretty considerably tonight. Granted, a majority of the red is likely at fault because of the expiring penalty killing, but Morrow and Myers were pretty abysmal all-around against the bottom two lines of the Sabres, only managing 5-7 shots against. Buff is clearly not up to game speed but being paired with Chiarot isn't helping as they constantly flip sides as either of them miss assignments along the blue line or try to manage a zone exit. I see absolutely no reason why Niku is being bubble-wrapped in the press box right now unless it's for protecting a trade asset.
  • That was Vezina-nominated Connor Hellebuyck tonight. Full props to him for saving the Jets' behinds as they had a parade to the penalty box and gave up a flurry of shots in front of him the entire afternoon:

Chief's final eyetest says: as for the most of the season, while I would like to be elated for this win after a very, very poor losing streak in where the first line had a return to form, I remain cautiously optimistic. The Jets are winning in spite of their play, not necessarily due to it... mentions of "underlying numbers" should be cause for confusion, sometimes concern. Nevertheless, Jets should take this win and hope to build on it, as you have to in his very tight schedule they're now in.

Helly looking like vezina finalist from last season , the PK was awesome , Connor skating and working hard every shift , great to get the win on a back to back on the road . I am now getting concerned with Laine , he's not skating , not getting into scoring position and generally looking lost out there right now .

Few thoughts...

-Helle's been really picking it up as of late. Bodes well for the playoffs and long term.

-Buff rounding into form.

-Man, I was hard on Laine initially, but now I'm legitimately hoping he's doing okay. He's a shell of himself and clearly in a terrible headspace. I hope the Jets organization is working hard behind the scenes to get him back on track.

-First line showing some mojo again. I'm still straight pissed at Maurice at the heavy deployment and am afraid Schief and Wheels will crash and burn come playoffs, but I think that this line is holding back. The top line tends to really pick it up late when the game is on the line and still come up clutch in that respect. I still think the SW in CSW needs to be split up though. The guys shouldn't be getting the workload they are or half-arsing defensive duties to conserve energy. I also think a change up may help Laine get out of his slump.

-JoMo
