He's turning into the next Markus Naslund and I don't mean that in a good way. With all the solidity of a bag of feathers he has zero physical game and he's one significant injury from being seriously compromised. His comments in the off season were pretty off putting to me (despite the possibly inaccurate translation from Swedish); Elias, it's YOU that should be making this team a winner, the team shouldn't be making you a winner. Now that he has hit paydirt he is doing exactly what Naslund did when he recieved HIS windfall, coasting. He even drew a dodgy penalty last night basically for being a sheltered wimp which is not a good sign. Even trading him isn't much of an option; what will you get for him now at this stage of the game?

I mean, I'm trying to get in his head. Maybe it's the Toffoli thing?

He tells management in no uncertain terms, "I need a winger". Then they let the winger,.and Tanev (the team dad), and Markstrom (MVP that year) walk? Maybe he just doesn't give a f*** anymore. Maybe he doesn't believe management is competent enough to get anything done?

Maybe the uncomfortable truth is he a) doesn't wanna be a Canucks or b) or doesn't want.to play for Benning who he feels hard done by.

The other possibility is he just sucks, but we all remember him at the all-star game. It just doesn't seem possible to fall that far.

Watching his buddy outproduce him in San Jose probably isn't helping either lol

We’re definitely not in the days of when he was leading the league in Posts and Cross bars through 12 games and had 1 point and you just knew he was going to turn it around, which he did and he went Point per game after that

I don’t feel as confident as I was then that he would turn it around quickly.

Still think the Canucks should have been in on Jack Eichel, with Pettersson as one of the center-pieces. Unless things turn around in a hurry, this is shaping up as another lost year anyway. I could have happily waited for Eichel to get healthy; watched the losses pile up for a high lottery pick; and then hit the re-set button.

You do realize that we could only retain one goalie?...I don't think its a) or b) either..He has close friends on the team, and some personal pride, I'm sure...The team has gifted him a lucrative contract (didnt he want more term?)..The ball is in his half of the court right now.

It’s the only logical explanation considering he JUST signed a 3y contract.

I hope/believe this to be true and he just became my 2nd fave recent Canuck behind Loui Eriksson of course.

I’m sure Loui was stoned like all the time.

Loui should mentor Petey.
I saw some coyotes fan poster talking already about the need for someone to push loui out of their starting lineup

He needs to start playing mean and get some damn swagger back. Guy looks like an emotionless wreck out there seriously. It's super painful to watch.

Part of it is 'contract related' imo. Pettersson is now the highest paid player on the team, and he has one goal on the season and is dragging the pp down by its ankles. You can see the noose tightening with every passing game.

Wouldn't be the first guy to feel the pressure to produce with a big-ticket contract, and then suffer a crisis of confidence.

I hope this is just the pressure of playing up to his new contract, that would probably be best case scenario.

Sort of a side note and not the biggest deal, but when he first came into the league he had an obvious swagger and attitude and I hate that the Canucks made him do media sensitivity training because some of the media were so soft and complained about his prickliness.

Like someone else mentioned, there seems to be no joy, emotion or passion to his game. The organization needs to figure out how to get it back.

Petey is getting pushed off the puck like a 16 year playing against 21 year olds. I think this has to do with whatever he did this offseason to get in shape which doesnt seem like a whole lot.

I feel like this isn't getting enough attention.

When you're not really built for pro hockey you gotta put in extra work it doesn't appear he is.

I do realize we could only keep one goalie. I just don't know if Peterson feels differently, because it's his countryman, or seeing how JM is playing in Calgary right now. I am just completely at a loss. I can't conceive of someone as good as he was just getting bad. He is either failing because of pressure, or failing because he wants out, I am just trying to figure out the "why",

Personal pride is definitely something I imagine is important to him. He had such a warm story about getting his friends out of Syria, etc, and seems like a person with a really strong work ethic and know he's blessed to be where he is,... which just makes it all the more confusing.

So what should we prepare for tonight? -2 and 1 shot on goal?

The thing is, Petey isn't the only guy out there playing with 'no joy, emotion or passion'. Look at the body language with this entire team. It's like they're playing just waiting for the next hand grenade to go off in their own zone.

When you see implacable guys like Horvat, Hughes and Demko visibly frustrated, you know something is going on with this team.

If anyone on the team is upset that the team chose Demko, a player that...
- fits better in terms of age
- has lower cap hit
- is very likely to perform better than Markstrom over the full duration of contracts
- has been the best player on the ice more often than not

They need to go through concussion protocol asap.

Its almost as if Pettersson has changed his game..After the playoff run of 2020, the following season he became a different player...He was hungry for the puck in his first two seasons, and now he's watching, instead of 'initiating'..If that makes any sense.

I'm not certain of the delay that the wrist had on his training but considering he was supposedly close at the end of last season and watching the videos of his shooting suggest he simply did not put in the work in the off season to make some significant improvements or at least get back to his conditioning and speed of the old Pettersson.

May have gotten a little comfy and cashing in on fame and the impending big contract/branding that he has worked so hard to get to. What's evident is he regressed badly.....weaker on his skates, getting gassed and making mistakes forcing instead of dissecting and reacting instead of plotting.I know he'll turn it around but hopefully he can stay healthy when he does. Hopefully a lessen has been learned and in the future he comes in like the Sedins used to do.

Watching that commercial with McDavid running a 4:23 mile made me wonder where Elias would fit in some of the basic athletic markers
