I would have no issue trading Pettersson at this point. He may never be the same player and his play has been slowly deteriorating since his rookie season. He still has tremendous value however and could return a 1st line player. There's a ready made deal in Buffalo for a top line player that wants out. Pettersson straight up is a better starting point than what Vegas would offer..
This short-sighted garbage will be hilarious in hindsight.

If there’s a stipulation in the trade about Eichel playing a certain amount of games or something to do with his injury then I would do Pettersson for Eichel. Really the only thing that worries me about Eichel is his injury. Take some of the risk about that out of the deal and I wouldn’t be against it. People forget just how damn good Eichel is and he would be motivated like crazy if you allowed him to get his surgery he wants and looked after him.

How do you personally address the salary difference? I am assuming this is Eichel counting his full 10.

Ridiculous.

The knock on Pettersson was whether he could handle the physicality of the NHL. So far it seems pretty clear that he can not. He has steadily regressed since he was injured in his rookie season and had been injured several times since then.

Trade him now and we can probably get a legit 1st line player. Do nothing and we likely debate whether he returns to form for the next 3 seasons. If there is a possibility of getting someone like Eichel straight up, the Canucks would be stupid not to execute.

I expect that his career will magically rebound as soon as this franchise has a new GM and coach and has some direction.

*However*

1) His behaviour and body language and effort level at the start of this season and the start of last season do not speak well for his character.

2) When you spend multiple seasons in a funk like this, you aren't developing and improving. And his overall ceiling and how good he could have been has dropped as a result.

I think Buffalo would be ok retaining at least a million if they’re getting Pettersson. The ~$1.5m or whatever the difference is can be done easily enough for smart guy like Jim. :sarcasm:

He is immature right now. I don't think that results in his ceiling being lower.

You would hope the Sedins could get through to him. If not it may be time to move on

He falls? Okay, it happens.
His shot is off? Makes sense after injury.
His skating is off? It’s been a while he played

The fact that he looks like his dog got run over after scoring or any of his team mates score? That’s a huge problem.

Best game of the season for him personally tonight, looks engaged at least
But the entire top 6 is dog shit as a whole rn

yea I didn’t think he looked that good tonight. He looks like crap tbh, no compete, confidence or real interest. I would feel more comfortable if he was trying, playing hard, engaged and competing but he’s just floating around.

Yes I do.

He was the guy setting the example for the rest of the team, staying after practice working on skills, where eventually a group of the team were joining him. I don't think you can question his work ethic, especially not in his rookie year.

No, but having multiple seasons where you don't improve your game does.
I don't think that's true either. Look at Mackinnon in his first few years. He has blown up after stagnating for his first 2-3 years.

Who would have though he would be this good after the 2017 season?

Relax. You have to remember the last couple of seasons have been crazy. First the Covid debacle, being thrown into a new season without much preparation. Then the freak injury at practice when he finally got going and now missing the training camp. He's had basically zero training camp time for two seasons now and has played very little hockey in the last 1½ years.

Of course that's everything but optimal for improvement. Give him time to find his game and self confidence back, it's not like this team is going anywhere anyway.

He should shoot alot more and his teammates should try to set him up for a goal to get him going. On a personal level, I also think it wasn't the best choice to re-train him to play center. He would score alot more points as a winger with less defensive responsibility. But, I guess the team is so weak at center he has to play there.

On a great team Pettersson would play winger and focus on scoring on rushes where the defense isn't set. In Vancouver he has to be the last forward entering the zone most of the time, covering for the wingers. Pettersson will change back to winger in his career IMO and I don't think that'll be in Vancouver.

Watching him last game and using his edges to cut into the middle high slot area while the puck was behind Edmonton net, was like watching a kid learn how to turn for the first time in their life. He was so unbalanced like he was going to fall, seeing that in an NHL player is an embarrassment to the league.

The real concern for me is that this play right now, where he doesn't look remotely like himself? It's actually not that far from the way he started last season, BEFORE the injury. 2 points in his first 8 games. We were all told not to be concerned about it then, too. And I wasn't, because it was a one-off.

It's no longer a one-off. Now it's two seasons in a row, and frankly I think it's not at all unreasonable to be really concerned. Especially considering what we saw out of this player and the way he dominated in his first two seasons. If it was a case of "Just watch him play, he's working really hard and just not getting lucky bounces" I wouldn't even care, but that's not it at all. He's a shell of himself. Based purely on what he's accomplishing shift by shift, he's literally one of our worst forwards right now, if not THE worst.

Boeser and Petty... Not who we will win with.

Boeser needed to go yesterday...

Pettersson, at least we can salvage value by keeping and signing flat or at a slight decrease... He will produce.. just not at the levels we hoped.

Boeser, as we see, is a simple injury away from being a liability on the ice.
