Big no.

He has better upside than Yamamoto. Caufield is going to be a type of Debrincat/Cammalleri for Habs.

Broberg isn't the Oilers best prospect.
Your narrative on Price is really intriging... Let's see where Kuemper brings the Avs, last year it was Grubaeur who was suppose to bring them far, how did it go? Who was it before that, can't remember. All I remember is they are always fine in net, until they aren't
Broberg having an excellent year in the AHL both offensively and defensively (by all reports, I don't watch the AHL), fulfills their biggest need other than goalie (LHD longterm solution behind Nurse).
Maybe Holloway is the "better" prospect but I bet Holland would value Broberg more highly due to pedigree and positional need.

I won't argue at all Price has been an excellent postseason goalie lately, because he absolutely has been. But he's been very underwhelming in the regular season, couple that with his age/contract and he just makes no sense to acquire.

You build a long term core but go all in for a 1-3 year window then retool and go all in again. Just like Tampa., Pitts and Chicago did
Exactly. We need a core goalie for the long term, not a goalie who might be amazing for a year or two and then might see his game fall off completely. Trading for Price isn't a move for the long term, and a 6M backup goalie will make the retool a lot more difficult.

I see this thread as Habs fans admitting it is time for a real rebuild. That is a realistic view of things in my opinion. They don't want a ten year rebuild like the Oilers had. Also reasonable. However you can't get every pick and prospect you want in one trade with one team. No one is worth that. Cary Price certainly is not.

Would Price be an upgrade in goal? Of course. Can a cap team like Edmonton find room for $6 Million and change for five years? A lot of pieces would have to be moved for that to happen.

Well, 70% of that cap hit is out the door this season with Koskinen, so we could probably make it happen...

but doing so would mean that our most NHL ready prospects need to be retained... thus my untouchables include Broberg (replacing Keith), Holloway (adding a boost in the near term), Bourgault (replacing Yama post-next-bridge) & Samorukov (providing cheap depth when ready).

That still gives 1st, 2nd and Lavoie as some pretty good returns. Lavoie could still become a MaxPac sort of player for the Habs, big, strong, 1-shot scorer. It's essentially two solid assets for an aging Price, who will only hurt their rebuild + an additional asset for doing us a cap favor (which they would certainly need to do for any team acquiring Price).

Failing that, I'm happy to take my 1st, 2nd and Lavoie and acquire the best high end young goalie available in trade and making $4.5M or less. Which I would think would be more than enough assets for a team already set in net.

Its not worth taking on a declining goalie attached to a huge contract just on the chance he manages to repeat his post season heroics for the next 5 years. There are simply better options out there that are significantly less risky.

If he's so great at winning championships, you keep him. Your goal is to win the Stanley cup eventually is not?

He's an Avs fan. Not sure if Bouchard still count as a prospect but he would be clear cut number 1. But I don't like Broberg , he's Nathan Beaulieu with better tools. He just skates himself into trouble all the time. That shit won't fly in the NHL. I like Holloway a lot more.
Bouchard is on our top pair. He isn't a prospect anymore.

I question if you have seen enough of Broberg to have an accurate opinion, but you are entitled to it. Broberg is killing it in the AHL so far this year.

Yamamoto has bounced back from his poor start. I think Edmonton considers this because Caufield has more ELC time left, but I'm not sure if they would actually do it because of Yamamoto's chemistry with Draisaitl. I think Montreal doesn't because they like Caufield and have no reason to move him.

Habs definitely say no, they're on the Caufield train- whether that leads to bustville or stardom they'll be the ones to find out.

Doesn't make a lot of sense for the Oilers either- Yamamoto plays in their top 6 and swapping him out for a guy who couldn't crack it on a much weaker roster this season just directly weakens their team right now. This is a playoff run year for them (optimistically) and they need to be improving the current roster, not weakening it.

For the insane asking *price* by some of the Habs fans on here I'd say the Oilers are better off looking at:

Dreidger in Seattle (after the Grubauer signing he suddenly became 2nd fiddle)
Khudobin in Dallas (who have a lot of goaltenders. Like, a lot)
Gibson in Anaheim (who would cost something around the numbers being talked about here. This might have to wait until the Ducks come crashing back down to earth.)

I would add Jonathan Quick to this list. Before someone jumps in and says he's washed up, he 4-4-1 this year with a SV% of .940 and has looked better than Cal Petersen.
He's got 2 years left (including this year) at $5.8MM and Kings can retain. He wouldn't even be expensive to acquire.

I can't image Montreal would be interested in Yamamoto as the main piece coming back in a deal for Caufield...

I think a deal would look something like...

To Edmonton: Caufield

To Montreal: Broberg, Yamamoto

As a fan of both teams, not even caring what the Habs would get back - Price @ 6.0 would be an incredible add to the Oilers.

When Price plays his last regular season game under this contract, he will be 38 years old. Mike Smith was 37 when he played his first game with the Oilers.

...and when he gets injured again? His regular season save % for the last 4 years he played

.901
.909
.918
.900

and it goes without saying 99% of the oiler base did not want to have BOTH Smith and Koskinen as the tandem this year. Price has played a lot of games in his career--how much gas does he have left?

Price at 34 has played 707 games
Smith at 37 has played 645 games

This does not include playoff games 29 games for Smith VS Price who has about 80.

At this point in time--I do not want the oilers to pay 6 mill for a 34 year old goalie unless they are the cloned versions of Patrick Roy, Hasek or Broaduer,

Comparing Smith to Price for starting is a bad comparison. Smith has good games and bed game and then gets injured. He is proof you should not name any G over 35 as a starter full time

Starts? You'll be lucky to get a first at the deadline with 50% retention. Probably looking more at a couple mid picks or a mid pick and a B prospect. A 1st is too much from the Oilers.
Savard (1st + 3rd), Scandella, Greene (2nd) all were inferior players to Chiarot and seem to say you are wrong.
