Basically zero interest in pairing Mittelstadt with Pettersson at centre. That would be a good way to make yourself a lot worse with no clear direction.

Would prefer an all futures package.

I imagine we probably went to them to jack up the value as well. Remember how 90%+ of the trades we made just pops up with no leaks.
Maybe true in the sense that we have multiple conversations going on, but make no mistake that we wanted the Carolina deal(s) and it was likely Tulsky that chose Rantanen over our guys

Well managed doesn’t mean they make enough money to want to spend to a 98M cap.
Their cap situation is shockingly much better than that.
They could take on Miller and Demko(or a different goalie at 5mil), sign Rantanen at 14mil and only be at 80mil
Remaining spots to fill would be Nishkin, 3rd pairing rhd, a 4th line and a 13th forward.
It would be much closer to 90 than 98

We play ourselves, man.

It's like...you finish unloading your trailer, think you're done for the day, then that dickhead supervisor Brian's got another one for ya.

It's more like:

John works really hard trying to secure a promotion.

Brad is also trying to get the promotion.

John makes it really obvious he wants the promotion. Brad doesn't.

Management starts meeting with John to discuss his plans to take over the branch. John feels like he has it in the bag.

Management promotes Brad, who they wanted all along, because he has more education and knows someone in corporate. John also worked so hard that they can't possibly promote him out of his role, and they benefitted greatly from using him to push Brad to higher aspirations.

Right idea. I disagree upon the execution. Keep Tocchet, project strength and produce leverage. I miss the days of Brian Burke who'd actually leverage this situation nicely.

Nowadays, all managers are suits with the charisma of a wet towel on the floor of some god forsaken men's change room.
Gillis did the same with Hodgson, just chose his targets poorly.

In the LR, yes. But if that's what you expect to happen, you deal under the presumption of certainty and have more bargaining power.

Right now we have less than none. We fire sale this mother, get ready for your new Benning overlord.

Wouldn’t say it with certainty considering we don’t know what else was out there

If you take futures at least you can flip them for not a super soft 2C to play behind your pillowy soft 1C.

Brian Burke lost nearly every big trade he made as the Canucks GM.

It’s not just about the cap, they are not in a big market. Friedman mentioned this earlier too, with the cap going up, a lot of teams are not going to spend to the cap especially as it hit 100M.
just because they have room to fit them doesn’t mean they will be a 98M cap max team especially with how stingy the owner is.

Honestly, I disagree but not in a vacuum, because he did lose. I say that because that takes the context out of why the deals are 'agitated' or become deals in the first place. Which is mostly down to ownership's willingness to sign off on who, what, where, and when. Then the manager is told to worry about the how.

I have doubts about the Canucks wanting to send Pettersson to a Western conference team.

I feel like every serious/legitimate rumor involving Petey and Miller has been with Eastern teams.

I think they would send Miller to the Oilers if it was possible at this point and if they offered the best package. They just want him off the team.

If they "just wanted him off the team", they could make that happen in a nano-second....they feel that this is a valuable player and they are trying to get some kind of value back.
