Nixed Rangers Trade for Miller
  • Trade didn’t get close enough to formally ask Miller to waive his NMC
  • Were unable to confirm specifics on the trade
  • Filip Chytil, Ryan Lindgren, and some future assets, including a 1st round pick, could have been involved; one source said the protections around the 1st was a key hurdle

if a trade on those terms fell apart on conditions on the 1st then i think the rangers were just trying to establish a market price for miller and had no intention of closing a deal. there is no reasonable condition on the 1st i can think of that would deter the canucks. rangers have no 2nds for the next three drafts and canucks would not mind a lottery protection deferral of a 1st, so it would need to be something deeply unserious like the rangers being able to supply any first they can trade for or no 1st at all in certain conditions.

There’s absolutely no reason for the Canucks not to be able to get a decent return for a player of this calibre. Period.

I don’t give a f*** how “toxic” Miller is rumoured to be. 8m in a rising cap is nothing. 104pts last year. Averages 91pts the last 4 years. Physical player that has size and skill, and can match up against the very best players in the league (when properly motivated ofc). One of the very best faceoff aces in the league. Still on a 73pt pace this year.

And you tell me Chytil, Lindgren, and a 1st is the return?

Management needs to not bungle this up. And posters saying any trade is a win, freeing up cap and getting a 1st is a win need to shut the f*** up.

Miller is a game changing asset for any contending team able to make the money work. He does not move without a prime asset and picks coming back.

The problem is...that is how "toxic" he is viewed around the league. Team #3 now. He was available with 2 seasons left @ 5.25M and no one offered a good package for him back then either.

Feel like he’ll calm the waters on EP/JT but then drop some other stuff that’s loud

If you think that this management is poor, you really must not have remembered any of the Benning era and how bad it was in comparison.

For a good number of these moves, the logic behind them was understandable.

#1 - Agree that this was not a good move

#2 - Kuzmenko was coming off a 39 goal season, gelled with Pettersson, and we still managed to cut loose on him after it was determined it would not work out with Tocchet (and it wasn't as a cap dump). This was the right move at the time.

#3/4/5 - Any other team with their 1D and 2D injured for a good portion of time will suffer. Yes, the Canucks have been missing a top 4 LD all season, and it probably was redundant to sign both Desharnais and Forbort, but the logic was that they would fill in the missing role closer to the TDL after some cap accrual. The injures to Hronek and Hughes really derailed the team more significantly than envisioned.

Jim Benning was a total moron that got us into the situation and I have often defended this management group. I give them leeway for the first two mistakes. I could see why they made such moves.

Last summer was a total failure on this group. They needed to aggressively resolve the issue on the blueline sooner because it's become quite evident that trades, especially for blueliners are going to be nearly impossible to make without a dramatic overpayment. Adding this Miller saga on top of this is now throwing gasoline into the flames. This franchise has no bargaining power or leverage.

It demonstrates a lack of foresight.

Also, with all this JT talk today, apparently Pittsburgh is open for a fire sale.

Friedman pretty much saying miller is going to get traded and his preference is the eastern united states

I think it's either NYR or Carolina. Gotta think he would waive for both at this point if they're in his preferred area.

Ideally both put packages together so we don't get frozen out by one or the other and can get the most possible.

The problem is that they peddled this narrative around a 3-4 year "competitive window" largely based on Pettersson, Miller, Demko, and Hughes. They gave Miller/Pettersson HUGE deals on this premise. They are now looking to trade one of those pieces for pennies on the dollar, Demko and Pettersson look broken, and Hughes is standing alone. They now appear ready to try to peddle this narrative AGAIN without the top-end pieces. This would be very Benning-esque if they went this route.

I don't see a problem with this at all. We were competitive last year, in the hunt this year, and with a couple additions through the trade (plus Boeser) I could see us being just as competitive very quickly. Just with a revitalized and longer timeline.

We will hopefully gain a younger less volatile center. Add in a capable defender or two that makes a huge difference, and cap space to upgrade further in line with our core's average age. In my mind it's no guarantee but we could certainly be in a better position 1-2 years from now with a trade today. In fact it seems logical to me. I don't think there is any way they go full rebuild and attempt to not be competitive if that's what you're suggesting.

Elliotte Friedman : Believe Miller's preference is Eastern U-S. Canucks are continuing to work at trading Miller, Carolina and Rangers still in it, less convinced about Dallas & New Jersey, I wonder about the Islanders

press conference is probably we aren't trading miller and have faith in their roster

Mistake #1: Signing Mikheyev to a 4 year contract when we needed help on the blueline. Had to use a pick and retain to get rid of him.

Not too bad.

Mistake #2: Signing Kuzmenko to a 2 year extension when it should have been foreseen the coach wouldn't like his style of play.

Again, wasn't too bad in the grand scheme of things. It's just annoying how there was an obvious disconnect between the GM and coach.

Mistake #3, 4, 5: Signing Myers to an extension, and thinking Desharnais, Juulsen and Forbort could round out our blueline.

I'm sorry but this was absolutely inexcusable. It was something right out of Jim Benning's playbook.

This JT Miller saga is now reinforcing the belief that our GM may be a total moron.
that is a short list of mostly reasonable judgment calls. rebuttal

-mikheyev was signed when we were rock bottom and had limited ufa options. until he got injured it looked like it would pay off. having a guy whose principle asset is skating suffer an acl injury two months after you sign him counts as a mulligan.

-kuzmenko had to be extended to retain an asset. he was always free money and they were able to move him.

-myers extended in isolation was fine. myers in front line regular season duty not so much. the failure was not infilling between myers and hronek. that is a major error that has really impacted this season.

-desharnais was a whiff but not a strike out. he is still a useful playoff depth piece.

-forbert has been injured and is now starting to look pretty serviceable. stay tuned.

-completely agree that juulsen was not adequate or prudent depth and the playoffs demonstrated that fact. i suspect that was a coach's pet situation and we are talking about a guy who was never more than 7/8 on the depth chart.

where they messed up imo, is not infilling behind forbert and hronek. they should have traded if necessary to get rhd help.
