that is a short list of mostly reasonable judgment calls. rebuttal

-mikheyev was signed when we were rock bottom and had limited ufa options. until he got injured it looked like it would pay off. having a guy whose principle asset is skating suffer an acl injury two months after you sign him counts as a mulligan.

-kuzmenko had to be extended to retain an asset. he was always free money and they were able to move him.

-myers extended in isolation was fine. myers in front line regular season duty not so much. the failure was not infilling between myers and hronek. that is a major error that has really impacted this season.

-desharnais was a whiff but not a strike out. he is still a useful playoff depth piece.

-forbert has been injured and is now starting to look pretty serviceable. stay tuned.

-completely agree that juulsen was not adequate or prudent depth and the playoffs demonstrated that fact. i suspect that was a coach's pet situation and we are talking about a guy who was never more than 7/8 on the depth chart.

where they messed up imo, is not infilling behind forbert and hronek. they should have traded if necessary to get rhd help.
I agree with the first two.

I don’t think you can isolate the last four things you mentioned.

The first two you can. The last four are part of a failure to address the blueline this past summer and it all ties together. Especially that right side.

Now do I think the issues with the blueline were exacerbated by the two centers playing like ass and not helping this team be competitive so that we’ve probably already added a top four D? Yes. Doesn’t change that all being a mess.

I don't see a problem with this at all. We were competitive last year, in the hunt this year, and with a couple additions through the trade (plus Boeser) I could see us being just as competitive very quickly. Just with a revitalized and longer timeline.

We will hopefully gain a younger less volatile center. Add in a capable defender or two that makes a huge difference, and cap space to upgrade further in line with our core's average age. In my mind it's no guarantee but we could certainly be in a better position 1-2 years from now with a trade today. In fact it seems logical to me. I don't think there is any way they go full rebuild and attempt to not be competitive if that's what you're suggesting.

The problem is not really the original strategy, but what they are doing right now. They are, by various reports, trying to trade one or both Miller/Pettersson, resign Lankinen, and look like they are prepared to take a subpar return on Miller (thus making the team worse in the near-term in all likelihood). They are basically trying to do the same thing again without elite talent outside of Hughes.

Recap of Elliotte Friedman's interview with Donnie & Dhali.

Miller Timeline
  • Everybody was frustrated by the loss to the Los Angeles Kings
  • Restarted/amped up trade talks after that loss
  • Got very close to trading Miller to the Rangers; no formal trade request but considers this semantics
  • Knew if they got a deal done with the Rangers, Miller would be willing to go there
  • Sometime Saturday morning the Canucks realized that the trade wouldn’t go through
  • Canucks really thought there was a trade but doesn’t know where it all stands with the Rangers
  • Canucks are continuing to work on this
Pettersson
  • Canucks are going to trade the dynamic of their group
  • Was communicated to the Canucks that Pettersson wants to stay and the Canucks are receptive to that
  • If calls come in, will listen, but not actively looking to trade him

Miller Trade Talks
  • Always believes that there is more out there than they are seeing
  • Believes the preference for Miller is the Eastern USA
  • Thinks Hurricanes and Rangers are around; less convinced about the Devils and Stars
  • Wonders about the Islanders since they prefer to move forward rathe than back; hard to predict Lou Lamoriello
  • Canucks are operating under the idea that Miller wants to go to the Eastern USA
  • Seems like the Canucks are very motivated to make a trade

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - and not that I doubt you all do appreciate it at this point - but @Vector does lion's work. Just outstanding stuff, and Board MVP by a mile.

Just like the real vault dweller.

Given that Pittsburgh is open for sale, and using the approximate Horvat trade.

Miller to Carolina for Roslovic + prospect+ cond. 1st.

I don't like it, I won't pretend to, but Canucks have liked Roslovic before, and may see him as a qualified 2nd line center (barf).

Canucks then flip the 1st+ whatever to Pit for Pettersson.

We end up worse probably, but it's at least something we can delude ourselves into seeing as ok?

Or better, we wake up from this collective fever dream nightmare and realize that it's game 1 playoffs against Edmonton 2024 and Demko is healthier than ever before.

Sherwood, Lankinen, Debrusk.
Sherwood definite win, though Hughes was pushing hard for that signing apparently.

Lankinen they got extremely lucky he fell into their laps and no other teams needed a G at the time.

Debrusk is only a decent signing considering the contract. He's on a cold streak again and back to around his expected point pace.

He absolutely is.

But to take some of the credit I gave him some JT Miller style tough love on X this morning to kick start his day, so he's firing on all cylinders :sarcasm:

agree. cap reality made myers an irresistable move when you are two rhd down. thinking he could platoon with desharnais was folly.

with hindsight, they should have spent debrusk cap on a rhd and forcefed hoglander into the top 6. they might have been able to sign myers.

  • Blue Jackets may be interested in acquiring Boeser as a rental; they hold him in high regard
Please pardon the invasion, but I'm wondering if any of y'all here know where or from whom this might have come from. (EDIT: Aside from the obvious answer of "that article, duh" ;) ). Literally nobody at HFCBJ has heard it before and so we're a mite confused. (And have other thoughts but this isn't the time or place.) There's like four names on the byline on that Athletic article so we can't tell if it's something worth us caring about. ;)

The main key players in that article are Thomas Drance and Rick Dhaliwal. Drance is the Canucks beat writer for The Athletic, along with another guy, and Dhaliwal is an extremely well connected Canucks insider. Dhaliwal is about as trust worthy as you can get. His information comes from agents.

just a sidebar observation, but i do not see the canucks acquiring any expiring ufas except as cap dumps. they got burned last year and the market is going to go haywire when the new cap is announced. players with term right now have never been more valuable and this team philosophically seems like they struggle to extend their own players.
