Oopsie . Last really good english scoring chance in the second half i remember came from Saka though. So i guess thats my reasoning ? Afterwards just nothing of notice
Yea Saka had that headed chance about 15 mins before he went off, although like 2 minutes after that Foden also had a really good chance.

Probably England's best chance of the second half was when Watkins got sent in and Schmeichel stopped him. Although it was from a really tight angle, so a bit less dangerous than it looked.

They need to press high, first of all. Problem is are their stars willing to do it?
They also need to be more cohesive in possession. The English lost so much possession in the 2nd half because Pickford and the back four didn't know where to go with the ball because the Danes outnumbered the English in midfield at times 5-2.

I understand the concerns, but it also seems to me that the whole environment in general is starting to sabotage itself.

Boring. Foden probably the best of a bad bunch. Walker did well for the goal. Watkins did ok running in behind.

Maybe time for Wharton in midfield.

Pretty bad. We just seem to have no ideas and this mentality of dropping off after we score is both confusing and frustrating. I don't think it's entirely down to Southgate, it seems to be ingrained in the players and that's frankly more concerning...

I don't think it's ingrained in the players at all. Most players on the team play on teams that try to win 3-0, not 1-0. The only potential outliers are Pickford, Guehi, and maybe Trippier.

Maybe not. But they are the ones on the pitch so it's kind of up to them to press and be aggressive. The imbalance in the team is not helping things, and our brightest moments were when Foden said f*** this, and went central. I still maintain a midfield of Rice and Bellingham with Foden at 10 would be ideal. Put Gordon at leftwing and Trent comes on as a sub if needed.

holy shit.

Could try this against Slovenia:

Watkins Kane
Foden
Saka Rice Bellingham TAA
Guehi Stones Walker
Pickford
Saka and TAA as wingers in possession. Or

Kane
Bellingham Foden
Saka Rice Wharton TAA

He's got the most talent in the world at his disposal imo he should do better, or at least play some attractive football, not go up then park the bus against the likes of Serbia and Denmark.

Does he? Jude, Saka, Foden, Rice, & Kane are nice but they’re not insanely deep like France and they don’t have a Musiala or Wirtz :dunno:

To me Mainoo seems a better option than Wharton in the second setup, but either way both of those setups seem to make better use of skills than whatever Southgate is trying.

I get that Saka is the player most able to play out of position because he's consistent in any role and willing to adapt, unlike basically all of England's other attackers, but it's still a shame that it's necessary to account for Southgate's shortcomings.

You don’t need anything that drastic. Just drop TAA and play Bellingham in with Foden in his natural position and Gordon on the left. Oh, and give Southgate a lobotomy.

They scored today and then decided to camp out at their own box. Asinine.

I still don’t believe in Denmark. But Hjulmand (Morten) is a gem.

I don’t think England were better even before the goal today.
Denmark played well for the first time since, well, 2021.

European domination is just a Kavan Phillips away... didn't know that.
The most galling thing about it is that Jude is quite capable of filling that role plus moving the ball forward. I have been warmly supportive of Southgate but this shit is getting old. The totally unchanged team today was so frustrating, it was plainly clear to everyone that his TAA experiment was not working (also, why did he not use it vs Iceland to test?)

I am sure we will beat Slovenia by enough to paper over the cracks, then probably beat our 2nd round opponent and get hammered by a quality team in the quarters. Really frustrating because this group of players should be challenging to win things.
