It isn't just about population, it has a lot to do with culture too.

Hockey is religion in Canada. It will never be like that anywhere else.

500 indoor rinks with 17, 075, 200 squared KM's seems like a bit of a stretch.

St. Petersburg, a city roughly the size of Toronto has around 5 indoor rinks.

Dunno why this is all so hard for you to believe. Hockey is a small sport globally.

China will never beat America at Football.
Never.
Nor are they likely to ever beat Canada at hockey.

So there are two exceptions.

Hockey, I agree - just because of weather. If it was colder, I'd disagree with both comments.

With 1.3B people... if one in a million become elite, that's 1300 elite players...

Move Quenneville down the lineup. I think he could be a solid role player but he does absolutely nothing in a top six role on this team. I haven't loved the chemistry between Point and Marner the past two games but they're not getting any help from Quenneville.

When you look at it like this, it makes a lot more sense.

It's still surprising considering Canada is:

map-2006-pop-density-canada-sz01-en.gif

Economy also plays a factor, especially individual wealth. Russians are not peasants by any means but:

Average monthly wage in Russia: 31,200 rubles ($500 USD)
Average monthly wage in Canada: $3770 CAD ($2720 USD)

The infrastructure just isn't there to build these arenas to make profits on them.

Maybe not in whole countries, but there is hockey strongholds elsewhere too.

Yes but Canada is in a class of it's own. There was a sold out crowd of 6,000 people watching a WJC pre-tournament game between Sweden and Russia a couple years ago.

Teams not good, coach even worse, but the worst thing of it all is Canadian fans.

Holy crap, I thought Leaf GDT could get bad, this place was so embarrassing with the shift by shift bashing of our own players I feel like Phil Esposito needs to defend the team and shame our fans like in 76'. But its not even that as our crowd in Finland has done it's job, it's the crap on here by posters looking to get digs in on kids because they were drafted by a team you don't like, or because they are seen as better then another prospect that you preference.

Here is some real for you; Strome hasn't been that good, he has 4pts in 3 games (Lighting it up he is not). He hasn't been a two way beast or any form of awesome to be getting praised. He's been better than everyone else by a single point on a lucky shot, but not some clutch super amazing center like people are posting. He's been invisible in these three games about as much as he's been noticeable.

Barzal after being a ghost has been noticeably better in our 1st game, much better in our 2nd, and noticeable only for being as bad as everyone else in this one. He coughed up the puck numerous times and lofts the thing to nobody with a backhand, not once, but twice, losing possession. He isn't much along the boards either and if caught, that is if he's engaged to begin with, he is outmuscled easily... which he must know as he's a fan of the no-look backhand pass to nobody. His effort back-checking isn't anything to behold either.

Marner hasn't been awesome either, but unlike everyone else he's been crapped on more than any player not named Virtanen in spite of the fact he's tied with Point and Barzal at PPG. He goes into the corners, back checks with 100% effort and overall been good (And considering his size he should be getting respect for that), and not warranting the pathetic amount of bashing he's gotten. He's turned the puck over several times by trying to do too much instead of making the simple play, and the kid needs to shoot more. But unlike Barzal (And Strome really) he'll cause turnovers by pressuring and will actually go to the net. He's easily been one of our best players.

Speaking of Virtanen, he's not 100% at fault for how things have gone. We happen to have a stupid coach at the helm and yeah, he hasn't been awesome or even consistently good, but give the kid a break, nobody on this team has been.

And I could go on and on about every player, all of them aren't playing to the degree they should, anyone being praised is being done so because of some homer, and anyone being bashed is being bashed by some hater. Overall Team Canada has been underwhelming, but that doesn't mean we turn our ****ing backs on our own guys and have a free-for-all bash fest. And the number one focus for any flake, if any is given, needs to be directed at Lowry.

End rant/

Didn't expect much from Canada this year. This was one of the weaker teams we fielded recently, everyone knew that pre tournament.

USA will take it.

Even when you send your weaker teams, you are always at the very least a top-3 favourite.

Not fair..

was with you until this point. i'm a huge Marner fan but this is a terribly biased idea. he's been a non-factor in 2/3 games...

Was jv as bad as people are saying? I just saw highlights and he was shown over and over in the third.

I wouldn't say non factor.

I definitely notice him every shift and his puck skills are insane. Lowry needs to scale back his shifts because he his one of the smaller forwards and frankly at 18 that's fine.

He's getting a bit too abused around the boards but that's hardly shocking, he needs some line mates that will do some of the mucking for him so he doesn't need to do it all himself.
