So was this a Classic Swiss - Canada hockey game?
Score a couple off of deflections. Bottle up the middle. bare down and play some of the most un-entertaining hockey you'll ever see in your life?

Didn't get a chance to see. Shot totals favoured Canada pretty solidly. Not as bad as usual when the Swiss go full hang on for your lives hockey though.

What ruined the Swiss against the Swedes is two things : lack of discipline and the goalkeeper. Gauthier Descloux is rather bad !

Canada faced a much better goaltender.

I don't know, he didn't look that much better than McDonald. Canada had better chances, but Suisse had the best chance of the 3rd period where it went through Blackwood's legs. A couple inches to the right and Suisse would have won this game 3-2. And it would have also been considered a "weak" goal let in.

Blackwood made back to back saves on a 2 on 1 after that ...stopping the shooter on the near post then showing fantastic lateral quickness to stymie the guy ready to pot the rebound...He also stood tall in OT...

I say...give him the start vs Sweden...and then we'll see

Can't wait to see Marner next year with 20 lbs of more muscle.

It's pretty impossible to put on 20lbs of muscle in a season.

10lb is lofty, 20lbs total sure but it won't all be muscle.

It takes elite body builders without steroids ages just to put on 10lbs of lean muscle mass.

Game against Sweden isn't meaningless IMO, could be a confidence builder. If they do well against them they'll have the momentum to beat anybody as the Swedes have a very deep and talented roster. If Canada craps the bed against Sweden, that could very well be the death knell for this team going into the knockouts as their confidence could be shot. Canada's still in the driver's seat for a Gold medal, people throwing in the towel already need a reality check.

Group B is still a bit of a crapshoot as to who places 2nd, could still very well be either Czech or Finland, both of which are equally dangerous (especially now that Czechs got Pastrnak, a guy who's played over 50 games in the NHL and already has 30 points to his record). Canada just avoided the "gift" of facing Slovakia but they'll have to come up against better opposition eventually anyway. Slovakia still has two chances to surprise and end up not being 4th after all.

Swiss really could have used the 2nd point in the OT/SO win, as that means grinding out an SO win against the USA would see them into the knockout rounds. That one point could well come back to haunt them. One thing the shootout is "good" for, it really does reward teams with players of massive individual skill vs teams comprised of less flashy players but with great team chemistry. Well, whether that's a good thing or not depends on your perspective. In any case, Denmark's team can and should rest easy. Still extremely likely they'll be at the 2017 WJC.

The point is when he physically matures he will be unstoppable!!!

Sure, that's a possibility.

Marner will never top out around 195-200lbs. It would hamper his skating ability and he's not required to crash and bang.

Adding 5-10lbs to sit around 180-185lb would be much better for him.

Marner looked tired this game, but he had a few shifts where he flat out dominated. Can't wait to see him play against Sweden. I think he'll be a big factor in the game

Was jv as bad as people are saying? I just saw highlights and he was shown over and over in the third.

He had a good game. You gotta keep in mind when people really want to see a prospect fail, they'll only seek out the giveaways, missed shots, lost puck battles, etc. So it gets over exaggerated.

That said, he's not "wowing" and There's just something missing with him ...and I can't tell if it's maybe poor conditioning or he's overthinking it; just seems to have lost that edge and enthusiasm. To me it looks like he's trying to play like Horvat or Draisatl where he's slowing his play down and being "puck possessive", but then at times second guesses himself and looks lost. That then leads to those soft shots on net where the goalie just easily gloves it, misses the net completely, or drives the net at half speed and the goalies already finished reading the play.

He is doing a lot better defensively though by winning more puck battles and not losing the puck along the boards. He's at his best when he has Dustin Brown mode on and he plays a bit reckless, and I haven't seen that player in quite some time.

My theory is that Benning told him to focus only on his weaknesses this tourney and he's failing to multitask with his strengths..like it literally looks like he's trying to play a game that wouldn't get him benched by WD and now he lost his fluidity and is debilitatingly hesitant.

But in the third you saw some flashes of good skill like when he dangled in tight and got a quick release off, made some patient + safe passes, and looked confident in his positioning. If he can get that ruthless/fearless physicality back and some jump in his game, he'd be cooking out there.

Just my observation and hopefully he get off auto pilot and get some fire

Yeah, he was gassed by OT but it was everything to do with Lowry's utilization of him and nothing to do with his conditioning.

His minutes need to be managed far more responsibly, otherwise he will wear down and he's counted on to be a difference maker.

This group needs to become a good TEAM... there are a bunch of extremely good players on this team but I just haven't seen them gel as a team yet. Imo there are too many individuals staying out too long and making mistakes. This team will either be a disaster or else hopefully click asap and play well. There hasn't been one dominating player yet and it seems like it's been players just playing well every like 5th shift. This has been the first time I've seen some of these high profile guys for multiple games in a row and none of them have blown me away. I expected alot more from alot of these skilled players and I've been very dissapointed.. the skilled guys arent very dangerous, the crashers aren't crashing and the dmen have been blah... they better figure out their identity here or else it'll be a quick tourny

Yup agreed. The only thing was that I didn't know whether the long shifts were Marners or Lowrys doing

Seeing as Marner doesn't typically do it in junior I'm going to assume it was the coach doing it because they were down a goal.

Marner doesn't strike me as the entitled type to stay out like that unless he's told to.

The Crouse-Strome-Virtanen line seemed to be the only line that could forecheck and give the Swiss trouble. It's the only line with actual size on it. Not surprising it was the only line that produced today.

And big props to Crouse. He takes so much flak on HF because he's not some shifty offensive wizard, but today's game shows what he can bring to the table in a top six role against physical opposition.

Definitely a fair point that I'm inclined to side with

I do have a bit of a concern with our PP. There's a lack of trigger man on the point on our top PP unit. I don't mind Marner playing one point but Dermott/Chabot don't have that big shot option that we need. Who would that be, Sanheim?

Canada will come back in the playoffs, wouldnt surprise if they win the whole thing.

The Swiss played real hard, and their goals were deflections not much the goalie could do about it. Canada still really out shot them and did out play them. Switzerland did play hard though so credit to them. Canada always has a shot at gold but I am just not feeling it this year. Canada has a weak squad this year and USA, Sweden and Finland are all real strong this year. I have only seen some highlights of Russias games but they look pretty good too. I'll still be cheering for Canada until the end.

You know this team is very young. 19 year olds usually dominate this tourney. Domi, Duclair, Reinhart were all 19 last year. Expecting Strome, Marner and all the other 18 year olds to excel this year is asking a lot. I still think that Canada can compete this year and yes they have to gel as a team to succeed. Defends is definitely missing a hard nosed shutdown defensemen and a rusher like a Darnell Nurse, but those aren't always around. Chychurn if available next year could be that guy.
