I do have a bit of a concern with our PP. There's a lack of trigger man on the point on our top PP unit. I don't mind Marner playing one point but Dermott/Chabot don't have that big shot option that we need. Who would that be, Sanheim?

I think Virtanen if used properly would be fine. He just can't be roving around.

If they plant him on a faceoff circle area and just cycle then pass to him to shoot I'd imagine he'd have quite a bit of success at it. Think Sedins-Vrbata in Vancouver.

It's pretty impossible to put on 20lbs of muscle in a season.

10lb is lofty, 20lbs total sure but it won't all be muscle.

It takes elite body builders without steroids ages just to put on 10lbs of lean muscle mass.

You are right but he could be 20 lbs heavier and still fitter.
A lot of 18 year olds put on 20 lbs of lean body mass in one year, some while lowering their body fat%.

Actually I wouldn't mind that. I could see Marner feeding Virtanen some nice one timer passes if set up correctly. Seems that they like stationing Virtanen in front of the net on the PP though for some odd reason that I don't agree with.

Exactly, and with Marner also being a threat to score it will really force the PKers to gamble.

Virtanen is big but he's not like 6'4" big, I don't think utilizing him as a screen would as effective as say, Gauthier.

Yup agreed. It seems like Lowry has these roles ingrained in his mind that he's unable or unwilling to change from.

Gauthier I like as a screen. I think that would add some much needed skill to the second unit as well

Oh I know, I work in sports nutrition and conditioning.

I was just pointing out that expecting a kid to put on 20lbs of muscle in a year is nearly impossible.

This is a terrific road to the final if they are deserving,

Finland and Sweden to get there most likely, two great teams but also two teams not named Russia and USA.

I'll take it.

Now time for them to prove what this team is capable of.

Things happen for a reason.

You know this team is very young. 19 year olds usually dominate this tourney. Domi, Duclair, Reinhart were all 19 last year. Expecting Strome, Marner and all the other 18 year olds to excel this year is asking a lot. I still think that Canada can compete this year and yes they have to gel as a team to succeed. Defends is definitely missing a hard nosed shutdown defensemen and a rusher like a Darnell Nurse, but those aren't always around. Chychurn if available next year could be that guy.

See I am expecting those 18 year Olds to dominate at the tourny.. I expect all of them to be the better players in the whole tournament. They are considered top prospects in the world and Canadians expect Canada to win gold every year. Unfortunately none are standing out as great players so far.. alot of them look good at times, but nobody has blown me away. I said earlier that if I watched these games not knowing who was who, I would never guess that alot of these guys are extremely high nhl picks... and I still stand by that after another game... this team needs to pick it up

Marner is a fancy dan who can get creative with the puck but he needs to really bulk up this offseason. He is weak on the puck. Wouldn't be the worst thing for him to go back to Juniors and play in the tournament again next year. I can see him having a big world juniors a year from now.

Game against Sweden isn't meaningless IMO, could be a confidence builder. If they do well against them they'll have the momentum to beat anybody as the Swedes have a very deep and talented roster. If Canada craps the bed against Sweden, that could very well be the death knell for this team going into the knockouts as their confidence could be shot. Canada's still in the driver's seat for a Gold medal, people throwing in the towel already need a reality check.

Group B is still a bit of a crapshoot as to who places 2nd, could still very well be either Czech or Finland, both of which are equally dangerous (especially now that Czechs got Pastrnak, a guy who's played over 50 games in the NHL and already has 30 points to his record). Canada just avoided the "gift" of facing Slovakia but they'll have to come up against better opposition eventually anyway. Slovakia still has two chances to surprise and end up not being 4th after all.

Swiss really could have used the 2nd point in the OT/SO win, as that means grinding out an SO win against the USA would see them into the knockout rounds. That one point could well come back to haunt them. One thing the shootout is "good" for, it really does reward teams with players of massive individual skill vs teams comprised of less flashy players but with great team chemistry. Well, whether that's a good thing or not depends on your perspective. In any case, Denmark's team can and should rest easy. Still extremely likely they'll be at the 2017 WJC.

Swiss will be playing early game tomorrow , after playing late one 2-nite, against a well rested Yankee squad...Swiss legs were already gone in the third vs Canada...No way they beat Yanks tomorrow!

Realistically, Switzerland's ONE and ONLY chance of making QF's was beating Canada in regulation today...which would have put them in a three way tie with Canada and Denmark ...with the Danes WAY behind in the head to head GF-GA totals btwn the 3 teams...

Canada was the team playing the second of back to back games, yet it was our guys who played with urgency in the latter stages of the third period. By that pt in game, there was virtually zero push back from Swiss?

Really the Swiss team never seemed to understand the situation they had put themselves in, that they needed to throw everything they had at Canada, including pulling their goalie in a tie game, rather than being content to take it to OT..

To me, their braintrust was asleep at the switch

The elephant in the room for Team Canada is the "me syndrome". There is way too much "me".

Every time a Team Canada player touches the puck it's almost as if they have to take 10 secs with it before they pass it along...they need to recognize that every single player on the team is literally a 'great player' at the junior level, so maybe just maybe they need to start passing the puck quicker and then moving to get open to receive the pass back.

I see too much standing around, not enough movement and way too many players holding the puck way too long.

I'd also like to add that once the coaching staff allows players to stay out longer than 40 seconds, it just breeds slower and slower play as each player on the bench knows that players will extend shifts to get their minutes and the whole team begins to not give full effort because they have to conserve energy to last longer than 40 seconds.

Just a tip for Team Canada.

1 - Pass the puck
2 - Give and go's, team cycle (not just 1-man cycle)
3 - 40 second shifts

Do these 3 simple things everything changes for the better. My guess is that there are way too many selfish players on the team to concede to a team concept.

Marner was garbage today. I don't see how anyone can say he had a good game with a straight face.

He wasn't garbage, he was over used.

He had one bad play in OT and it's clear that he was gassed and that's why it happened.

Moving forward I would like to see something like:

Beauvillier - Barzal - Marner
Crouse - Strome - Virtanen

as the top 6. The Barzal line is a strong cycle group with equal threat to score. The Strome line are all strong skaters that can use their speed to gain the zone and score off the rush.

Lowry really needs to diversify the offensive attack strategies and get players in positions to work with their strengths. You can't have all the forwards playing a cycle game on big ice, it's too prone to break ups during the passing.

Do guys take long shifts in the OHL? The Team Canada forwards were taking two minute long shifts. Made no sense. The Swiss could only roll about 2 lines and 2 pairs, you would think the coach would want a constant stream of fresh legs out there.

How are the Yotes fans spoiled?

You should watch them some time... Entertaining as hell and have had major steals ie. Rieder, Domi, Duclair, Martinook , Murphy, Elliot, etc. ....not to mention Dvorak, Strome, Garland, Merkley, Perlini, Dauphin and Fischer in the pipeline. Boedker finally found consistency, Tikh is playing decent, and they'll probably get a high draft pick this year.

He wasn't garbage nor did he have a good game imo.. u can see the skill is there but nothing seems to be working for him and he keeps trying to do fancy plays. I wish he would keep it simple. He hasn't impressed me at all but I can see he definately has skill. Needs to get alot stronger

Nope no idea what that was about but I'm inclined to suggest bad coaching.

Lowry doesn't seem like he has a clue what he's doing. Players were doing >2 minute shifts at times...

Not usually no. It's not really a thing in the CHL.

I guarantee it was Lowry extending shifts to try and get a goal while they were down or tied.

was with you until this point. i'm a huge Marner fan but this is a terribly biased idea. he's been a non-factor in 2/3 games...

I'm not by any means trying to paint a rosy picture of him, he hasn't been awesome, but nobody has, and amongst our "nobody is playing awesome" players he's been one of the better ones and not even close to deserving of post such as "Bust" "Trash" "Worst player".

Chabot is easily the best D man for Canada.

Nope.

And nobody should make these sort of claims about any of our players. I don't think anyone is playing up to their capabilities and the team isn't clicking, and at the head we have a coach who isn't making smart moves and handing out crazy ice-time which is actually hurting us.
