Canada has about 8-9 times more players than Russia. And hockey definitely is not the number one sport in Russia.

Soccer is a clear number one in Sweden and Russia.

I'm willing to bet against that. You're telling me a country with 35M people has 8 to 9X more hockey players than a country with 140M+ people... where it's the most popular sport (according to a 2015 survey)... or, at worst... the second most popular sport?

But the number 1 sport in a country with 35M people still probably has less players than the number 3 sport in a population of 140M - 300M+.

According to IIHF, no idea how accurate: http://www.iihf.com/iihf-home/the-iihf/survey-of-players/

Canada registered hockey players: 721,504
Russia: 99,172
Sweden: 60,089
Finland: 75,871

(This is all ages, both women and men).

And if you can't accept that hockey isn't the most popular sport in Sweden and Russia, that's your problem. Not sure why it bothers you so much though.

All this very much.

That line was really good in the third. Some great chances for everyone on that line but couldn't finish.

On a side note, I really liked Gauthier. I'd like to see him on a line with Point and Konecny.

Crouse Strome Virtanen
Perlini Barzal Marner
Gauthier Point Konecny

I like that.

Yes, Gauthier has been impressive for a draft eligible guy.

I like your lines, I think Marner and Barzal would be dynamite.

Canada along with Finland are the only top countries in the world which has hockey as the number 1 sport, which has a great deal to do with it.

Jeezus... Just gave the thread a quick glance out of curiosity and wish I hadn't lol. Honestly no one looked great for Canada in this one and to me that falls on the coach. Obviously the Swiss looked at Canada and saw for the most part a bunch of smaller skilled players and decided to check them out of the rink. Lowry got his back up and started relying heavily on the bigger forwards like Crouse, Strome, Virtanen. Strome's been their best player so can't debate that move but Crouse is almost invisible and Virtanen is too visible. The guy has tunnel vision with the pick and doesn't use his linemates at all. He should be playing on a checking line with less skilled and let him carry the puck to the net every time he touches the puck and they can just crash the net behind him. As far as I can tell stromes a great player but his only truly elite attribute is his shot. He needs guys that can get him the puck on scoring positions. Enter Marner, Barzal, Konecny. I don't think Lowry has any idea how to coach high skill which is primarily what this team is. I'll be really disappointed if the Strome-Crouse-Virtanen line is together against Sweden

I lived in Sweden. Soccer is the clear number one as it is in Russia, even more clearly.

And you would be right in your bet because it's only 6 times more u20 players. 5 times more indoor rinks too.

Shouldve brought an unknown like Chychrun as the 8th D to get some offense from the d-core, but not sure whether Chychrun specifically did well in camp or not.

Gauthier has definitely shot up my draft rankings. 29 goals in 30 games and exceeding expectations this tournament. I was skeptical at first cause he plays in the Q but he's got my seal of approval.

I should be coach. Get me to Finland, Hockey Canada.

Well, when the statistics say hockey is the most popular sport in Canada... it kind of makes it hard to accept, not that it changes the fact there's a huge population gap anyway. #2 in 140M+ > #1 in 35M (generally)

Also - in organized hockey - yes, most likely. I mean in terms of access to hockey, outdoor rinks, playing outside - with the amount of land (and weather) Russia has - hockey has to be pretty obsolete for Canada to have 8X the players with 1/5th of the population.

Population has nothing to do with it. Players, rinks, resources etc. are the things that matter.

It's both. You do need a relatively big population base so that you actually have people to take advantage of the rinks and other resources you mention. A minor thing, so whatever, I guess.

I think Strome is shooting more because of instruction from the coach,, ( he has taken 14 shots , which is first in the tourney) However I think he needs people that can finish on his line , then the line will be more affective

Do you think China and India should be the best in every sport?

This registered players thing is a bit silly given that hockey is much more of a recreational sport here than anywhere else.

I've suspected the OHL is a little off in talent this season. Kitchener,Erie and London are running away with the league but are no where near the level of oshawa, Soo, or Erie last year or guelph the year before. My point is it's really showing up with this year's Team Canada. Seems like the depth is not there.

From what I remember, he did not have a good camp.
But still probably should've brought him. Just as a PP weapon, maybe.

Oh not at all. We wanted Provorov if we went D, then liked Connor at F the most but we thought Barzal would be off the board.

Personally, I wanted Provorov. I am quite happy.

Oh...and Lowry is going to cost Canada if he does not change things up to a more balanced attack and icetime.

Strome Marner and Point wont have any legs left. Lowry needs to balance things out a bit more of at least shorten up the shifts.

There's a major disconnect between the popularity of hockey as a sport in Russia and the number of people sending their kids to play organized hockey. It's popular exclusively as a spectator sport, pretty much.

The numbers are correct. Football is completely dominant in Russia, and most of Russia is very sparsely inhabited or uninhabited. Most live in Western Russia. In Central Russia and Siberia bandy is actually more popular than hockey.

Strome and Chabot were great. Strome is by far the best forward on the team and Chabot is the best defencman. Hicketts was also good. Marner was meh, expected better from him. Virtanen also picked it up in the 3rd period. Chabot is a lot better then I thought he was. Sens fans should be very happy with him.

I think Virtanen and Crouse aren't a great compliment to Strome. 1 or the other and preferably Crouse cause like I said Virtanen obviously doesn't play well with others. I think Barzal could be awesome on that line. They've for whatever reason decided against Marner but I think Konecny would be good too. I just don't like what I've seen after 3 games from the forward group. There's very little chemistry on any of the lines
