Some interesting and in part very creepy 1930s pictures from a time when hockey was popular in Britain and they had their own Miracle on Ice, winning Olympic gold in Garmisch-Partenkirchen:

Most of these shots are well-known classics and have been in numerous books over the years. The Germans documented the 1936 Olympics very well, both the summer and winter Olympics.

Hitler enjoyed hockey and Philip LaBatte, the Canadian player, was the one that Hitler applauded the most. Probably because of Labatte's physical play, as he layed out some big hits when Hitler saw him play. One of the above photos is from that game when one of the Canadian players is getting an autograph from Hitler. In the other photo with Hitler in the stands we see the British secondary coach and captain Carl Erhardt talking to the players (the guy with the moustache looking into the camera)

In any case, it's a nice time capsule.

^^^ Love the old ad-panel.... Jean Beliveau at one point wore & endorsed Daoust Skates however for the majority of his career like most pro's of his era wore CCM's Tacks.... Canstar Sports eventually acquired Daoust, also manufacturing & or distributing Bauer, Lange's, Micron & a few other brands.

Love how casual Dryden is in that photo, apparently he had a ton of faith in Serge Savard getting the puck out without any problem

 Ya. I noted that as well. Laissez faire or what? Rick Martin had some serious wheels on him & normally at minimum you'd be hugging the near post either in a crouch with your stick flush on the ice or standing... just in case..... as in better safe than sorry...

Absolutely! Of course a goalie connoisseur like yourself is well aware, he would rest on his stick with his catching glove under his chin. That seems like he was just a tad too relaxed a bit earlier than usual in that shot!

Certainly a very unique & eccentric individual amongst even a group of people, those who have played or play the position and who generally march to different drummers. Very unusual. Everything about him really. Burst onto the scene in 71 & played absolutely lights out, one of the greatest goaltending performances Ive ever seen, that anyone a lot older than I had seen at the time going way back into the 30's. Thats saying a lot. Brimsek, Durnan, Sawchuk, Plante, Broda, Crozier there mid 60's with Detroit.... amazing.

And the worst part is he was drafted by Boston... we all know the rest of that story

.... meh.... you guys did alright. Loved Eddie Johnston & most certainly Cheevers... two guys who's styles, dispositions, characters far better suited to the Bruins & the City of Boston really. The Broons beat themselves through the 70's on several occasions rather than actually "getting beaten" by Montreal, Philly etc. The Bruins were that good, too good really, flawed as a result. Was never big on your Coaching, Don Cherry in particular. Too many mental lapses; brain freezes. Noted the same with Sinden earlier & certainly during the 72 Summit Series.
