Just catching up, great stuff RGO! In post 918, I'm fairly sure that's Gerry Desjardins in goal for the Isles, not Billy Smith. Desjardins wore 1, 30 and 31 during his tenure but I'm going by the mask.

^^^ Nasty. Started with the Ice Plant according to reports. Caused some considerable difficulties for the Montreal Wanderers who had to close up shop as a result.... Its believed the Westmount Arena (built in 1898 for hockey specifically, seating 10K) was the first indoor arena built with rounded corner boards, previously everything else square..... Also a real throwback, all bleacher seating, and you could "rent" a personal rug to sit on & curl up in if feeling chilled.... had a smoking parlor etc... the maintenance man & his family provided with an apartment that was built into the joint.

Wanderers did not have to close shop. They tried to leverage a few players from the other teams. The Jubilee Arena where the Canadiens played after the fire was willing to take both.

NHL did not give in so the team folded.

Yep... more to the story of the Wanderers than I dwelt upon. The "Redbands" hung in & on there through 1918, winning 4 Stanley Cups. Showed resiliency post fire but.... beginning of the end, long train coming.... say.... you ever catch a game or two at the Jubilee.... Montreal Arena? Ha?. Remember Dickie Boon? Billy Bell? Raymie Skilton?... Raymie an import outta Cambridge MA.... Defenceman as you'll recall.... bit of a bust I'm afraid.... just one game played.... I thought he had a lot of potential. :(

^^^ Looks like John Grisdale has a shiner there..... went on to become the Commissioner of the BCHL, serving 15yrs starting on 03, stepping down, retiring at the end of this season. Hired Orland Kurtenbach when he joined in the role of Community Relations, who was the 1st Captain of the Canucks as most are aware, both of them post playing careers going on to Coach junior. Grisdale never did play Major Jr himself, Jr.B with Dixie, one of the early players to go the NCAA route, Michigan Tech where he got an Engineering degree. Offered a Pro Tryout Contract with Toronto, signed, played in Tulsa, CHL, Leafs... traded to Vancouver where he played until 79 or thereabouts.

Concerning the ice resurfacing photos, I have a copy of Lynn Patrick's "Let's Play Hockey" (belonged to my Dad when he was a kid, lol) and in the book, Patrick talked about how the old timers by the 1950s would boast about how harder defencemen hit back in the 1920s to 1940s era of the game, but did not consider that a fresh ice surface at the start of each period by modern times changed things that good bit in that respect.
