Great Hockey Photos You've Just Seen for the First Time!

Ok, so all are not ice hockey photos, but still interesting.
Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin before coming to North America.

Chaplin was known to have been a keen roller hockey player and Stan Laurel also enjoyed the game.

It is not far fetched to believe that they both saw local ice hockey games in London at the time,
maybe even in Manchester where they played roller hockey.

1909 - Another version of the above photo with Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin.
It's a rare one that I believe was in Charlie Chaplin's personal collection, published in his autobiography

1909 ca - Charlie Chaplin playing as a forward in this newspaper ad. Arcadia Skating Rink was located in Levenshulme, in the Manchester Area. In 1910 the city got their own ice skating rink and ice hockey team

1920 – Charlie Chaplins – The winners of the Whitby Town League (Ontario)
It’s not easy to see, but their logo is the face of Charlie Chaplin, that’s pretty neat.
Some of the players are even sporting the Chaplin moustache that was in vogue at the time

Just a small seaside town in North Yorkshire, fishing etc... barely notable in England nor internationally but for the fact that its the nearest town to the Village of Aidensfield, home of the long running tv series Heartbeat (based on a series of best selling books, about the life a Policeman in a small, rural english village in the 60's) for those familiar with that, often featured in various episodes over the years.

The Chaplin team from Whitby was Canadian...Whitby, Ontario. I should have pointed that out. (I'll edit it)

.... ah ah.... ok then.... Ive been through Whitby up in Yorkshire so you can imagine my shock when I saw that photograph, that there was a "town league" & so on.... I mean.... are you kiddin me? Who knew?.... I doubt very very much if they even had an outdoor much less indoor facility back then but I thought "ok, thats fun, English Son Charlie Chaplin being honored by a bunch of Fisherman & Farmers up in Yorkshire, thats fun"..... now, Whitby Ontario on the other hand RGO, sure, but still very unusual, unique.

Sorry if this was posted already. Not sure how many people have seen it before.

I’ve always thought this was a powerful picture. Maurice Richard out cold on the ice in Game 7 of the Cup semifinals vs the Bruins. He of course would later return to the game - scoring the game winning goal - and one of the most iconic photos in hockey history would be taken, a battered Richard and Sugar Jim Henry shaking hands moments after the final buzzer.

This has to be, at the earliest, the 1983-84 season because before that Lee Fogolin was the Oilers captain. That same year McDonald and Doug Riseborough split the captaincy in Calgary.

Not the same team (this one is Norwich), but a bit of context for the equipment these guys were using, below the camera's cutoff. Note the rounded stick handles which are visible in the Hardy/Chaplin photos.

Ah yes, the Pens' short-lived colored skates, introduced the same year (70-71) as the Seals' green/gold skates (prior to white skates). St. Louis also had colored skates for a few games that year as well.

Indeed.... and a generation earlier, colored equipment in the form of gloves did catch on.... the NY Rangers the first in 1957 with red, white & blue... followed by the Leafs in 58, Chicago, Montreal & Boston. Detroit the last holdout, issuing/wearing the staple-sensible-sharper looking tan colored gloves through the 67/68 season and a look that I prefer to this day.... and if that wasnt bad enough.... you can well imagine my... my... horror & revulsion when I first saw the abomination of.. cross yourself & may G0d help us.... colored skates.... and dont even get me started on goalie equipment.... white skates.... colored pads & blockers.

1950s ca - Lou Fontinato is restrained by the police and players. I know I've seen this before in books, so it's rather famous, but still a great shot so I am including it here anyway for those who haven't seen it before

1960s - Jacques Plante proud of his cup

January 3, 1970 - Pittsburgh Penguins players and coach Red Kelly wearing earmuffs to block out the loud crowd in St. Louis. Did it help?, Nope, they lost 0-6

January 3, 1970 – Another photo from the same game as above. Red Kelly’s assorted-colored earmuffs bought at Kaufmann’s Department store was no hit with the players. Keith McCreary (# 10), Bryan Hextall (# 7), Ken Schinkel (# 12), Glen Sather (# 16), Ron Schock (# 17),Tracy Pratt (# 6) and Duane Rupp (behind coach Red Kelly)

1973/74 – Andy Brown in his last NHL-season as the last maskless goalie in the league. Wayne Cashman (# 12) is skating by him

1974 – Garry Unger All-Star MVP. Those were the days, forget about a lot of cash and cars, you simply had to settle for less

1976 – Canada Cup – Bobby Orr – Denis Potvin – Bobby Clarke. Maybe the greatest Canadian team ever, as well as jerseys

1978 – Nice crisp shot of Larry Robinson and Ken Dryden

1996 – A sight for sore eyes. St. Louis Blues alternate jersey that is said to have been vetoed by Mike Keenan

2000s – Jussi Markkanen hit in the mask by a shot

^^^ Some fascinating photo's up there RGO.... that one of Lou Fontinato.... certainly captures him well. Especially for those who have only read or heard about him. Never really saw him up close & personal like that, in those sorts of circumstances & situations. Pretty clear why he was considered a bit of a terror.

Fabulous. 1952/83. Never visited that establishment but heard about it. Basically a "beer room" huh?....
Cold quart bottles of Molson Ex, Canadian... Labatts 50 or whatever... small flagon of tomato juice on the side.... served by middle aged waiters.... smokers at every table....

So, where are the TV sets? Added later on I suppose?... That photo looks early 50's.

Excellent and inexpensive meals, cooked on the spot. TVs came later. Early 1950s is correct, evidenved by the 6 digit alpha numeric phone # in the ad. 7 digit numbers mid /late fifties.

Betting several pf us tried these back in the day:

Man they were hard (for me) to skate in! But Esposito, Mikita, Gare, and Luce wore them, among others!

^^^^ nope, never did try them out Howie though they did make a goalie skate as well. Lange of course an innovator, leader in the design & mfg of ski boots back in the day. Their skates, pretty much just a hard plastic & nylon shell with no real give, that all going on inside with the liners. Pretty radical for their time followed by a couple of others like Micron & so on.
