Yep I would put KG ahead of DF.

That said he wouldn't have signed this contract if his intentions wasn't to sign with the team. That would make zero sense.

I could hardly think of a better situation for him than LA. Regehr, Mitchell, Greene which are his slots are all near retirement. The Kings are one of the best teams in the league and probably the most defenseman friendly team in the league considering the amount of support they get from their forwards. Doughty, Voynov, Martinez, Muzzin, McNabb are the only locks ahead of him. After some seasoning he'd be battling for a spot behind Muzzin and McNabb with Forbort most likely.

If he could find a team that would give him the money and playing time sooner than the Kings might, he could want that more. The CBA is what it is. It gives the college guys some leverage after their senior year if they play well enough. Gravel seems to be using that to his advantage.

Want the most shocking answer ever? Most know how I feel about Forbort and Gravel....

The answer is no. Forbort passed Gravel in my personal prospect rankings for the end of this season.

There is nothing wrong with Forbort, he is a fine prospect that has taken a little longer than people like. The problem was , certain people thought Forbort was going to be some high skilled Defender cause he was picked in the first round. He was a project from day one, and the highest rated Defender left on the board after Fowler got taken.

But the guy is going to be a legit NHL Defender.

I agree completely. He is fitting in exactly where I have always thought he would.

This is a head scratcher. Kings won't offer him a deal because of some huge flaw (work ethic? party boy?) but they still want him in the org yet know any other team can grab him before next season. I find it hard to believe he makes to Manchester next year.

Is the consensus still that Gravel is ahead of Forbort on the current depth chart?

I for one think he is based on what I've seen of their development and the last rookie camp

To me, yes.

Granted, I've seen only a handful of games for either player. But Forbort hasnt impressed me much. He's turning into another Hickey/Teubert where his development just stalls.

McNabb is the clear favorite to make the Kings next year. I think it could be argued that Gravel and perhaps even Campbell and Bodnarnchuk are ahead or equal to Forbort right now. He's still plenty young to refine his game, but we'll be waiting at least 2 years from today. Forbort could eventually replace Regehr perhaps. I dont see him as top pairing potential at all anymore.

The Kings can only give out 50 NHL Contracts. They chose other people over Gravel (for now).

You guys are reading to much into this. It's encouraging that Gravel/Kings is even bothering to sign with Manchester.

Gravel could have easily said (Screw it) and not even bothered, and went the UFA route (he still can).

But a contract with Manchester is good for both sides. Also lets not forget the Kings have a draft and UFA coming up, they have to be careful how many Contracts they hand out.

I agree with CNS, Forbort started to really sharpen his game by the end of the season.

Remember that was his rookie season in the AHL. A pretty good year when you consider that. Not worried about him at all. For some reason he's got this reputation that he's gonna be a Toffoli like prospect and crack the Kings roster in his first pro season.

It's strange really, being a first round pick really screwed people's view on Forbort.

The kid was a project from day one, he was the highest rated defender after fowler. Forbort was never going to be some dynamite Defender.

I don't know where people got that from.

Maybe, but knowing how much DL covets defense and with neither McNabb or Forbort being a sure thing -- doesn't add up to me -- not buying it.

I knew that FORBORT was a project when we got him... knew he wasn't going to be much of a two way guy.. we drafted GRAVEL for the same attributes: A stay-at-home guy w/ lots of size and some leadership. From the limited time i've seen w/ both players, it just seems that Gravel has a higher hockey IQ and has better instincts. Of course I'm rooting for Forbort to succeed but I get this Teubert feeling when i watch him. A player w/ the tools but w/o the IQ and the instincts... maybe it's something he can acquire over time but I'm honestly not counting on it. Happy that we have Gravel in the mix to ease the blow in case our PROJECT doesn't materialize.

Kings currently have 35 people on the Reserve List out of 50 excluding the players that are UFA and RFA.

Remember that Gravel was considered by most pundits and the media as the best Dman for the NCAAs and was absolutely dominant during the finals.

Kid is dead solid and hasn't done anything but improve and excel since being drafted. Things will work themselves out as they tend to do.
