Maybe it was hiring a guy to coach, just because he did good in a completely different league?

Cossa is still doing OK for his first year in the AHL. .899 save %

Only Amadeus is a plus (1) and has played in all 10 games.

Berggren - no goals 4 assists. Has to be tough on him after a year with the big club.

Watson was an assistant with Lalonde in Toledo. Lalonde became head coach then coached in the AHL, and his record was pretty mediocre. But anyways, it's a natural progression. It's not like he jumped 2 levels, and he has 4 seasons of AHL experience as a player.

I think the primary issue is that he was a defenseman without any offensive skills. It's like having Doug Houda as head coach, lol. This organization keeps hiring coaches that had no scoring skills during their playing career. 4th liners, defensemen, and goalies. Tanguay is the only exception.

Maybe Bob or Steve would have been better.
Babcock's first name isn't Bob or Steve. :naughty:

Great players rarely become great coaches and coach's player skills has nothing to do with coaching skills. How many coaches from this list were great players?
NHL Records
or from this?
Elite Prospects - Award - NHL Coach of the Year (Jack Adams Award)

Year or two or more ago i read probably from here, one member was a some sort of manager at some hotel. And one day the owner ordered him to hire couple skiing instructors for the tourists, he/she hired three. 2 pro skiiers and 1 who has been working in similar job before but he never was a pro athlete. Surprise, surprise the 2 pros sucked at coaching, nobody learned anything from them. But that amateur had many happy customers through out the season.

It's whole another ball game, when it comes to coaching. That member had a conclusion that to these pro athlete's performance comes so naturally that they don't really know how put it in words. Maybe there is some truth in that conclusion, i don't know but hey Gretzky sucked at coaching.

Ironically, I actually hired and trained ski instructors. My take on that is natural athletes have a hard time explaining body movements and even tactics. At the same time, teaching a sport is completely different than coaching a sport. Where I worked, the race coaches didn't teach beginner lessons, and vice versa. I never coached racing, though I did race beer league.

Anyways, the head coach usually isn't a skills coach, that isn't my concern. The concern is knowledge and ability to teach a system. I don't think a defenseman with no skills or goalie is the best approach. I'd rather have someone who had the knowledge but lacked on skills, talent or size. I think Hirose will probably wind up coaching, much like Bruce Boudreau did. (BB was an AHL star that lacked in size, but put up a bunch of points.) Some of the stats for coaches when they played juniors is interesting, Berube was a PPG player in the WHL.

But hey, Trotz did win a cup, so low event hockey can work. I've actually met someone that played with him. The question is if low event hockey is the best approach for developing prospects....

I don't think Watson has problems with that, this is not his 1st rodeo and assistant coach Julien also has a lenghty and successful career as coach. Those things won't happen without knowledge and ability.

And common sense would say that the "benchwarmers" would make great coaches since they spent majority of the time on the bench. They see what works and what should be done differently.

Personally i don't care about coaches player backround, track record in coaching is the only thing what matters.

In Hirose's case i would put my money on front office job, more suitable for a guy with college degree. And average hockey guy jumps to coaching immediately, like Lashoff and BBQ-Bruce.

Kind a funny what kind of player Berube became later on. And Pat Burns barely played any hockey, but that didn't stop him winning. Scotty B, what was he? 19? When he "retired".

Well when you think of, most of the players in this stage are usually struggling with defensive game. They often take liberties in junior level, but that won't work in pro level. So maybe it is the best approach in AHL.

This conversation got me thinking who actually is the person, who was a great player and great coach later on?

Jacques Lemaire, comes to my mind first. 853 regular season games 0.98 PPG, 145 playoff games 0.96 PPG. 8 Cups, Calder-trophy finalist, HHOF. 1262 games as a head coach 617 wins, 117 playoff games and 61 wins. 1 Cup and 2 Adams-trophys.

Rod the bod is trending in right direction but still missing that Cup win

Detroit needs to reassess its AHL program top to bottom. It has to be more than just coaching.
also to be reassess'ed should be both the griffins and red wings social media sites as they are both the most lame azz'ed karen'ized fluff sites on internet . griff ownership real washed up , and chris i is headed there but was saved by yzerman

Are we allowed to overreact positively to Kasper now because he had two helpers when they put him on the 1st line with Soda and Burger and on the Top PP with Mazur? Asking for a friend

Kasper’s pass to Bergers was sublime wow. Nice play on Mazur’s goal also. Ed had a lovely heads up play and pass on the EN goal also.

People really need to chill on Kasper. He is coming off a major injury, is new to NA, and is more of a supportive player offensively than a line driver. That isn't to say I don't expect a good season out of him but I am not surprised its taking a little bit and some better line mates to get going.

If he develops into a Bert that is better defensively and can stay healthy that is a really useful player to have. Him and Mazur could be huge for our long term playoff success as those are the guys that get big goals and are hard to play against in the playoffs.

Problem is we desperately need line drivers. We need some of our top prospects to exceed expectations to become a contender. Replacing 50 pt Copp with a 50 pt Kasper and 55pt Compher with a 55 pt Danielson will not get us there. We need some of them to excel.
