Who do you think Chevy should and could have acquired at RD (and LD) that would have been better?
I definitely wouldn’t have offered Schmidt a damn thing…he showed he didn’t want to play in Winnipeg multiple times and yet Chevy kept chasing him, like a love sick puppy… I’d have signed a 1-2 yr guy til next season and went hard after Pulock, who is rumored to be interested in relocating next off season... but now we’re stuck with 4 years of Schmidt at 6M per year.
As for Dillon, since I was waiting til next year for Pulock, I’d have given our kids a chance to prove themselves and see what we had.
I don’t think we are ready yet…we still need to address our top 6 RW. I think Chevy jumped the gun

Can you find and cite any credible source that indicates that Pulock wants to relocate to Winnipeg? If not, it's just a pipe-dream, and not really a valid issue to use to assess the Jets' moves.

Did you listen to his interview?

Last year he confirmed he was never asked to waive to come to Winnipeg.

This year he thought about it for a day before waiving which is perfectly logical and reasonable. I would do the exact same thing.

He never refused to waive to come here even once never mind multi times.

You clearly are in the minority on this board, 88+% of posters give Chevy an A this summer which is largely b/c of Schmidt & Dillon trades which lock up our D for the next three years at a cost of nothing but two 2nd rd picks and one 3rd pick which isn’t needed and really isn’t worth much.

Schmidt had a down year with a brutally bad Nucks team, no shocker there, their entire team sucked…..player doesn’t change that.

Everyone has a right to feel as they may, but the vast majority of posters love his trades this summer.

I think that giving Colorado a good run in round 2 would mean the season wasn't a waste for me either, at least given how strong they look right now. Let's see how the season plays out.

for whatever reason, I feel like Colorado takes a little bit of a step back due to goaltending. Not sold on Keumper

Schmidt said he wasn't asked to waive - I'm sure he knew Winnipeg were involved so I guess he didn't proactively say he'd waive to come here? Given the way Vegas operates I wouldn't be shocked if he was never asked directly.

Pulock is rumoured to want to play here because of a post on this forum suggesting they've heard he wouldn't mind playing here. That's it. And if he goes hard for Pulock and fails, you're happy with maybe re-signing Beaulieu to play on the top pairing again?

Sounds like you'd rather bet on a dubious maybe and make suboptimal choices out of spite.

This group has 3 years left. If you aren't going to make the most of it, might as well just tear it all down and maybe they can compete again in 5-7 years?

for whatever reason, I feel like Colorado takes a little bit of a step back due to goaltending. Not sold on Keumper

They might but it's still a very strong team. I don't think it's crazy to have them as a clear number 1 in the Central. I also think Kuemper was a rare bright spot for Arizona last season.

exposed Copp and signed Apples to a 5 year contract!:D

Copp was resign for this year. If I had to chooses, having 1 year more of Copp is a major plus for the Jets success this season then keeping Apples. Don't get me wrong I really like Apples but every team was losing a player and Apples was our lost. How could Chevy prevent this? Would you rather we lost a D (DeMelo) where we were at our weakest just to keep a good 3rd line forward that is replaceable with internal players like Ves, Gus and Harkins?

He upgraded our defence, re-signed the players that needed to be re-signed, and didn't give up a roster player or significant prospect. Plus, our 1st and 2nd round picks were pretty good as well.

It's hard to imagine doing any better with the cards he had to play this summer. Maybe a better backup than Comrie, but the additions of Schmidt and Dillon were more important and left little cap room to maneuver.

I can imagine quite a few ways it could have been better. Some of them would be highly debatable, like exposing Copp instead of Appleton. I can come up with fantasy trades, several featuring Copp. But of course, there is no way to know if any of those could have actually existed or not.

I like that he didn't give up any significant players, prospects or picks in doing what he did.

We still don't know how the cap crunch is going to look going forward, we don't know how backup goalie is going to work out and we don't know how well the renovated D corps is actually going to perform.

The off-season is not quite over yet, but I will give a preliminary A+ based on what we have seen.

I'm surprised at the lack of notice from the various experts, pundits and prognosticators. The potential improvement in our D seems to be going over their heads, or maybe under the radar. It is like they expect Schmidt to be like last year, or worse, Morrissey to be like Morrissey with Beaulieu, or worse and Dillon to have no positive effect on Pionk. Meanwhile expecting nothing from Dubois and little from Wheeler and Stastny. Not to mention that Scheifele is an overrated goon and all Ehlers can do is skate.

I like being a little under the radar. I'm just surprised at the level of unimpressed I seem to be sensing.

If I would have scored only 8/10 on a test, I would consider it an F. How did not knowing 20% of the material ever become an example of excellence? But I digress...

I give Chevy a C for doing only what optics required. This team needs a new coach, this team needs a new core to really elevate itself to serious contender status. After this real season plays out, with real opponents and real travel demands, you will see that I am right.

Optics required a major change to our D corps. Chevy could have spent more and got less while still filling that optical requirement.

Are you suggesting you wanted him to trade Scheifele, Ehlers, PLD, Pionk, Morrissey and Hellebuyck? Oh, and Connor, Lowry and Copp?

Pessimism is one thing. Pessimistically I question the Schmidt acquisition, the Appleton exposure, the loss of Brossoit. I think we saw the true Dubois last year. I lament the eternal retention of Maurice. I think that our luck will see too many injuries to too many key players. That's pessimism.

Calling Chevy's off-season a failure (yup, that's what you called it) is just contrarian negativity.

Is his off-season a guaranteed success? There are no guarantees. You know that. But if it fails, it won't be because he did only the minimum required for appearances sake. It won't be for lack of effort on his part.

Top 6 RW are Wheeler and Ehlers, probably one of the strongest teams in the league there.

I think this will be Maurice's most important season since they made the conference finals. No excuses with upgrade on D, top 6 mostly in their prime and arguably best 3rd line in Hockey mostly intact . 1st round loss or worse, I think we see a coaching change.
What are you talking about? He has a whole arsenal of excuses... "Schedule's too busy" "Too long of a break between games" "The boys are tired from travelling" "The boys get too comfortable at home" "They just weren't moving their feet tonight" "We're a young team" and maybe even some new ones like "adjusting to the new Conference structure" :sarcasm:

I'm mostly serious, though. We've seen the "no excuses" headline in the past, and yet Maurice STILL can't figure out how to beat the trap, and is great at pulling out "explanations". He's a master of spin.

We have to win first before being acknowledged as having potential. The talking heads are as bad as fans for jumping on and off bandwagons.

Really Chevy almost has 1 hand tied behind his back being the GM of the Jets , lots of players have us on their no trade list. That alone makes his job harder than alot of other GM's . I think Chevy is one of the best GM's in the league.

 There is another side to that coin.
It is older players who have No Trade Clauses or who are UFA and don't want to come here. They tend to be more expensive, both in acquisition costs and in contracts. It saves Chevy from himself at least as often as it handicaps him.

It is more important to retain talent once we get it and Chevy has done very well there.

He said he was not asked to waive for Wpg last year. This year, he didn't say no. He just didn't say yes until after talking to Stats. Then he said he was very happy to be coming here. Give the guy a break.

A B is high praise from Sipowicz. I like it.

holy shit, you're not kidding. Sip is like the professor of urban legend who crows about half his class dropping before the midterm, half of what's left failing the midterm, and half of what's left failing the final. Getting a B from that prof is like getting an A from me :P

Outside of getting a premiere 1D on a sweetheart deal and perhaps securing a better backup (that may still happen) I don't think he could have done much better, and item one is probably impossible.
