I have to say that I really liked and respected the Russian team: such amazing discipline and skilled and dangerous players giving their all to their team. Actually pretty much like Finland usually is (though not this year with the shambles of our team defence). Russia is such a great hockey nation but curiously so often playing less well as the sum of the so talented individuals would indicate.

It felt like the roles were reversed from previous years?

Russia played really strong as a 5 man unit. Worked hard. Defended diligently.

Finland had the better high end talent this year.

Stopped by to congratulate Finnland, in spite of what I am about to post after a legitimate champion dislodging two top contenders en route to the finals.
Without any conspiracy can't help but wonder, how come in the end of a decisive game refs would give 6 consecutive pm to one team? 4 of them legitimate, but we also know, that every other play in hockey can be whistled for a penalty.

Also, I think Kamenev had all the reasons to be upset at the refs, but had no right of saying stuff, that triggered a game misconduct. He really impressed me throughout the tournament, to have made such a mistake in the end.

Unless hurt, Svechnikov must be the biggest disaster of the decade, one would only wish guryanov, vovchenko, or even one of abramov/sokolov would have been in his place. How can a star junior player turn into a pathetic presence in one year???

Also had no right to smack an official with his stick

Who was it who said that penalties have to be even in a hockey game? If there is a set line - what gets whistled and what does not, it could simply be that one team is better at straddling that line than the other.

I can't say whether that was the case here or not, because I haven't reviewed the game in such detail to say that the Finnish players got off with a lot while the Russians got a ton of cheap ones - simply posting a reminder that lopsided amount of penalty minutes for one team is not alone a sign of bad or biased reffing.

I mentioned 3 consecutive penalties in the end of the game, where did I mention a lopsided number of penalty minutes? There is an unspoken rule that in such games you basically only call if someone head gets chopped off.

All of the penalties were legitimate and the Kamenev situation should have lead to a powerplay...

So the refs should decided the game by letting a player cheat? Interesting.

You're welcome, guys.

Refs should have called more penalties for Finland, for no reason. I see that logic now. And no PP from the kamenev penalty, refs really sucked.

Such a thing can happen, but there is no "rule". Wasn't even the first time in this tournament, since Kapanen got a similar call at the last minute in the group stage game vs. the Czechs.

If a Finnish player did something similar and got off with it, then we could argue it was bad reffing. But complaining about something being called, if plain as day, simply because it was the "end of game" is no argument.

Actually reffing helped russia to get into overtime by not giving PP to finland from that kamenevs brainfart. You also could scored in OT where there was no powerplays. Still you didnt. But referees fault, right?

No, not right. I said all I wanted to say already.

When one team has the momentum on their side, that can lead to to other team committing penalties. The penalties in the 3rd period were so clear that the refs and IIHF officials would have been questioned, again, by the media had they not been called.

In the national celebration event in Helsinki (still ongoing), Aleksi Saarela was given the mic and the task of asking Patrik Laine a question.

Saarela (clearly struggling to come up with a question): "Pate... What's your favorite color?"
Laine: "Gold."

:handclap:
