It wasn't pretty, both teams seemed gassed from playing the previous day. Finland looked pretty lost in the first period, and seemed well on their way to a decisive loss, but they got their wind back in the 2nd while Canada seemed to lose some of theirs.

Some huge saves by Lankinen and timely goals by "Mörkö" sealed the win. Even so, Canada looked pretty dangerous to the end, but couldn't get past the goalie. Finns were just falling over on the ice at that point.
The journey was just too pretty though!

Looks like Canada used all its puck luck against the Swiss in the QF to stay in the tournament, thus nothing left for the final:sarcasm:

Well done Finland! Beaten Russia, Sweden and beaten Canada twice!
Yes, tournament first game Finland canada 3-1 and last game 3-1, nothing changed during tournament.

It's almost absurd. I have to admit that my expectations were fairly low for the elimination rounds, after Finland's loss to Germany.

Figured there was a chance against Sweden, which had struggled, but I thought Russia at the very least would prove to be too much. And Canada, after its dominant win against Czechs, looked primed to win another championship.

You just don't usually bet against Canada in a championship final.

Barkov, Rantanen, Aho, Laine, Teravainen, Granlund, Heiskanen, Ristolainen, Vatanen, Rask, Rinne, Lindell didn't play for Finland.

Dn't use roster as an excuse.

None of those players would make Canada's Olympic roster, even Canada's best IIHF player Stone likely wouldn't.

I would personally have Barkov in over Toews, but that would never happen in reality

Canada isn't the Red Army and Finland isn't a bunch of US college kids.

But it's still very impressive.
Who did the States knock off in the quarters and semis at Lake Placid, though? Not teams with the number of NHL goals this year that Sweden and Russia had between them going into this tournament.

What's interesting is that the game vs. the Soviet Union wasn't the gold medal game because it was a round robin format.

The US beat the highly regarded Czechs 7-3 and tied the favoured Swedes 2-2 earlier in the round robin.

After the Miracle on Ice, they beat the Finns 4-2 after being down 2-1 after 2 to clinch the gold medal.

It's hard to compare because the Soviets and the Czechs didn't have NHLers at that point, and there were only one or two Swedes and Finns that I can think of.

Anyone having done the cap-hits on Sweden, Russia, Canada- and Finland?
