I don't think any Canadian fans are discrediting the win by Sweden, good job! :handclap: but the tournament's clout and prominence in the hockey world maybe? You obviously skipped over my earlier comments so I'll be glad to repeat them. This tournament will never get the notoriety in North America because is not a best on best, period! I said the same thing the last two years when Canada won. Meh!!

So don't be gloat so much. If you want we can arrange a game against Canada's Olympic Gold Medal team vs Sweden if you prefer to settle this? ;)

Who said that WC is a huge deal in Sweden? People obviously watch it, but that doesn't mean that it's a huge deal. Swedes gets happy when Sweden win things regardless of sport, but some achievements are obviously bigger than others and gets more attention. There are A LOT of things that i value higher than a WC win for Sweden. For instance, in hockey the Olympics has always been bigger for me on an international level.

Your last comment makes you sound salty and nothing else. I might not value WC superhigh personally, but i would rather win the WC than the joke of a tournament that is the World Cup, where all the "best players" are supposed to face each other.

I'm not gloating at all. If someone doesn't care about the tournament, why post in the thread at all?

Sure! Since best on best started, Sweden and Canada have faced only three times. Canada won in 1998 by 3-2, Sweden won in 2002 by 5-2 (don't remind us how that tournament ended!) and Canada won the 2014 final 3-0 in what was a pretty tight game. Sweden were down their top 3 C in Sedin, Bäckström and Zetterberg, losing one of them just before the game started. Canada's team was pretty damn immovable, though, with the possibly greatest team defence ever assembled - but who knows what would happen now, best on best? Canada would be the favourite against anyone and everyone, but it's not the NBA where you can predict the results of a season/tournament based on a roster.

What gets me is when the same people who think best on best is everything rejoice as the NHL decides not to participate in the Olympics (not saying you do).

I guess I'm just triggered by the "this is our game" crowd. ;)

Man, I really loved watching all the games in the tournament this year. What a great year it was for the WHC. Congrats Sweden, played a great tourney. And congrats to my boys in red and white who I thought killed it this year, gave it 100% in every game since the Swiss game, and could've won it, so close! Till next year, fellas, we'll get that gold back!!

Do you have the power to do that? Are you Bettman?

No salt here. Again congrats Sweden. Never said whether the WC is a big deal in Sweden or not as I wouldn't know (don't live there) BTW Canada Cup > WC 1000x over

It sure was a great tournament by WC standards. Great performances from the lower ranked nations, -not least the two host nations, Finland turning it on after a disappointing group stage and almost coming back from 4-0 in the bronze medal game, great comeback by Canada in the semi-final, and a tightly contested gold medal game where you're sad someone has to lose (especially in a shootout). Whatever your thoughts on where WC medals rank, can't complain about more great hockey!

Kinda sucks but I mean saw it coming, we were weak in goal and D and we didn't get it done with what we had.

Congrats to the Swedes.

I thought your D and goalie did great in this game. Well, outside of three or four breakdowns early in the first where turnovers led to Swedes practically alone in the slot with the puck (all but one of whom missed the net with the shots). Maybe that was amplified by the inability of the Swedish forwards, though.
Very evenly matched game overall.

The last five minutes we opened up a little and were pressing for the goal. We kinda knew we were in big doo doo if it went to shootout.

Just a great hockey game to watch.

Pickard matched the King as best he could and really it wasn't that evident that a kid with limited NHL success was going against maybe the best goalie of the last 10 years.

On Sweden side, Rask and Lindholm were really good. They kinda slide under the radar cause the Canes aren't that good, but both consistently made plays happen

All in all this was one of the most entertaining big ice games I have seen in a while. The fact that it ended 1-1 after 80 though explains why international ice results generally in less goals.

Nylander and Marner and are both very skilled and explosive. However they are both on the smallish side and will get banged around quite nicely once they meet up with a team (not named Washington) that enjoys using the body!

It's Lundqvist it was gonna take a great effort with the D he had.

This is a good lesson for our boys and hey 3 straight gold medal games after the drought is excellent. Would of liked more NHL help but we can see that our depth is good and we can uncover new' players for the program.

Or they'll be like the Penguins or peak Blackhawks and torch them with skill and speed.

The "size" or "hitzzz" narratives need to end. Be a good team. You can do it anyway you want. Big/physical like peak LA or finesse like the Hawks.

Nylander is 6"0 and ripped did you miss how hard it was for players to take the puck off him when he had his back to them? In case you did that isn't all puck-skills you know, that was a fair deal of strenght.

Marner doesn't have the strength to fend off guys like Nylander/Matthews can but he has amazing intight stick/feet work. It amazes me how often lil Marner manages to either steal/chip pucks when under/dealing physical pressure.

Basically this. If we're good enough to win, and we were this year, the other team deserves credit for beating us. We had every chance to win gold but sweden got the win

Yeah we all already know that the pool of players are restricted due to the NHL. We dont need any more smartass comments, just comes across as sour grapes comments to us Swedes. That said Canada could ice a team with pretty big names still, a little disrespectfull, to call Scheifele a "F" player. He did score over a ppg past season, after all. For instance.

A bit sad that we didnt see a proper ending, but they teams seemed to have a tough time to score, so personally it was good that they ended the game, could have gone on forever.

just curious, does sweden care about the world championships?

no one in canada really cares right now

Well no matter which team win SC, it will never be a Swedish team. Olympics and the World Championship are the only times a Swedish team can win (not counting the Mickey Mouse Cup). So yes, Sweden do care a lot about the WC. A lot more than the SC (the average swede at HF might think otherwise though).

I guess there will be posted celebrations from Stockholm later on with thousands of people in the crowd. Getting there the team's plane usually get escorted by Gripen Fighter jets after a win. This is all over the first pages over all major papers in Sweden today.

Is that Asterix in the background??

Seems as a theme. Saw Obelix at a Paris game and a Swedish fan with Asterix helmet.

They were the official mascots for the tourney and hanging around in every game.

They ain't gonna ditch the shootouts. They sell the TV rights to a number of different countries and for programming reasons have to be able to say when the games will finish at the latest so the Serranos or whatever can start in time.

Congrats Sweden. :)

The WC (iihf) win is pretty big, but not THAT big. Its played every year, and its not the first time Sweden won. And Swe hockey fans know that the status of the tournament are that it is second grade to the OGs. Hard to say how to view an OGs without NHLers though. Wont be the same of course.

I guess next World Cup will be the real world championship, granted they allow real teams to qualify. The last one was a form NHL all star friendlies.

1. As NHL is completely out of Olympics, but partly in this one:

2. As World Cup wasn't hosted seriously, and it had exhibition feeling painted all over it:

Congratulations Sweden for being World's best. This is the main event currently, and has always been traditional international competition. Canada, of course, was close and had two earlier golds, not that they were bad.

Ps. Always so ridiculous to read losing team fans posting that they don't care, trying to de-legitimize the opponents golden moment. Remember, that I don't care if you care, and I don't care if you don't care that I don't care.... I don't care of caring in general. I just care about results

Yeah the world cup had a strange feeling to it. Now, I cant deny it was a bitter feeling to watch Sweden fail against a gimmick team, so its not like we didnt put any value into it

Congrats to Sweden !! I didn't watch the game but it does seem sort of cheap to end a gold medal game with a shootout. Couldn't they play overtime until someone won it ?

Hopefully they can change that for their future tournaments !
