Honestly just saying with no bad intentions, but I think it’s hilarious that Canadians are saying the Russians shouldn’t complain about the call. It would have been a 6 on 3 for about a minute and I’d bet the whole hockey world would have gone mad if this happened against Canada. Just my two cents.

STRONG DISAGREE

if Canada were trailing by 1 goal and had a 6 on 4 and Romanov hit a Russian camera in the stands and no penalty was called. I'm positive the Canadians would be totally fine with it.lmao

You just take that 5-0 loss and move on. It’s our turn now. :)

If my calculation is correct, Canada gets rewarded with an easy group in 2021, whereas there'll be another group of death

Canada, Finland, Swiss, Slovakia, Germany
Russia, Sweden, USA, Czech, Austria

The Swiss' QF win against Sweden from last year could have a lasting effect for years, now it's easier for them to finish 5th or 6th

But wouldn't Canada be entitled as the host to make one move, like maybe get the USA to same group to have the classic round robin match?

If my post said it shouldn't have been a penalty then I apologize. That camera was
A: not above the ice surface (eg. scoreboard or those cameras they have on wires)
B: definitely not a structural object supporting the building

Here's how I know the camera is not a structural object... the tournament is over... TSN packed up the camera and it's on its way home to Canada. Yet, somehow, the building in Ostrava did not collapse.. nor did the rink.

The words or term “structural object” is not always as narrowly defined as you have stated above.

A “structural object” can be any object that is composed of multiple components organized in a very specific way. For example, the Unipod holding the camera and the camera attached is a type of structure. The glass enclosure is a type of structure.

Whether the intent of the rule book in its use of the words “structural object above the ice surface” should apply only to the actual building structure itself that I do not know.

One thing I will say the unipod and the camera are a type of structure and are partially located above the ice surface.

This could be the interpretation the referees took.

I think the term refers to any permanent or semi-permanent item.

So for example if it was a fans sign then that wouldnt be considered part of the "structure" or permanent/semi-permanent.

Nothing of that matters, as the puck hit the camera behind the glass, as I've already posted proof of in an earlier post. This thread would've been 100 pages longer if this would've happened against Canada. It was a bullcrap call and everyone who isn't completely biased beyond belief knows it.

It would be 100 pages shorter if you'd stop crying about it.

There were bad calls during the game. Russia scored off one. Where's your post-a-thon about that one?

What are you talking about?

Literally the only thing that ever happened was the instance where the U18 team had to be restocked because some of the players tested for meldonium.

But meldonium is not performance enhancing and was not on the list of banned substances for many years, until it was suddenly added - without much warning or understanding of how long it takes the stuff to leave the bloodstream.

It was literally the only thing that happened to the Russian hockey system and it's in no way tantamount to cheating.

Fair enough. I can't keep up with all the exact implications when a country can't play sports fairly. They took a banned substance.

Russia has made their bed when it comes to showing the world they refuse to compete on a level field. I recalled their U18 team being banned like most of their other athletes. I forgot the exact details...they do it so much I can't keep up on all of it.

The object was not above the ice. It was above an area outside of the rink. The call was not in accordance with the rules. Simple fact. It doesn't matter now. But that's simply how it is. Bad calls happen to everybody, yes. This was a bad call.
IIHF trying to save face. The referees blew it, just admit it!

I think you are right. There's no shortage of whiny, poor losers in Canada too. They'd be just as wrong to do it.

It's so hard to be sympathetic with anyone who is heartbroken that a technicality deprived them of a 5on3 on a very close puck over the glass penalty.

A broken stick was the difference between putting a puck into a half open net and giving up the game winning odd man rush for Canada in OT of an elimination game last year. Canada's out in the quarterfinals and Finland goes on to win Gold. Tragic. A puck off a camera stole my 5on3? Go away.

The correct reaction then was "shit, that was a tough break, great game Finland," not to spark a debate about the stick manufacturer's culpability.
