Why do the Russians taunt so much? Is it part of their culture? Being sincere, not sure how else to ask it.

As a Russian speaker and someone who was born in the Ukraine and someone whose parents watch Russian television, there's a lot of "we're the greatest" when it comes to a lot of things coming out of that country. I wouldn't be surprised if it has something to do with that.

Haha, I love the taunts. It makes winning even better for the other team. It can either work for your team or backfire (or do nothing .. I guess). If taunting gets the other team off of their game, then why not? I always find it pathetic when some people in the hockey world freak out over taunting, but they don't give a **** about a dirty headshot or boarding that can actually injure someone.

I would never taunt though. Never give another team any extra motivation. Sometimes the smallest thing is all it takes to set a team off and destroy you for mocking them. It just shuts down anxiety and pisses the team off so they can focus all of it on the player taunting them.

Fair enough.

I just know Canada and the U.S. hate (too strong a word) each other but they never seem to taunt each other - I mean after the game is over. Russians taunt everyone and are very blatant. Sweden, who never taunted for years, has taunted in recent years. Hopefully it all ends one day.

I meant after the games - while they are on the blue lines and celebrating their win.

Russia coming back and making it a game salvaged the tourney to be honest, It would have been pretty forgetable if not for that.

Glad to see Canada get gold again but I can't say I'm surprised. Despite the hyperbole and hysteria Canada rarely stink on the small ice. 2010 1 OT goal away from gold, 2011 played a really great tournament but had 1 brainfart period, 2012 again a solid team that had everything that could go wrong go wrong early in the Russia game and still almost made an epic comeback. Canada then play a couple stinker tournaments on the big ice but that wasn't happening back home on the small ice with this team.

Games like this go toe to toe with any of the best sporting events for excitement and drama, I just wish the big teams would play each other a bit more, Sweden didn't even play the US or Canada which is a shame.

2011 played a really great tournament but had 1 brainfart period

I was there and I remember turning to another fan during the 2nd period and asking, "Do you think it's over?". He replied, "It's over" with a smile. I agreed.

I have never seen 40 minutes of domination turn so quickly. It was sickening.

I know he got shaken up but if thats the case he shouldve been parked on the bench the rest of the game because he was a turnover machine.

He did put up 4 points in the memorial cup final game against Halifax as a kid who just turned 18 that spring and that's a pretty big game. He got rocked early and didn't look 100% this game but 5hit happens and teams take turns stepping up and bailing each other out. I thought Petan had a solid tournament.

Looking back at this game in a few years, a Canadian team that featured McDavid and a ton of tournament leading scorers (Petan, Domi, Reinhart) better have beaten a Russian team without any superstars (Tarasenko/Kuznetsov, Yakupov/Nichushkin, etc).

I still think Team Canada didn't look great and goaltending was weak as always. But gold is gold.

Canada beat a Russian junior team that had two future NHL megastars 6-0 in the GMG in 2005.

remember this game? After the 3-0 goal a US player put his hand to his ear, taunting the crowd.

Score was 6-1 , if memory serves. OV and Malkin were , of course, the two future superstars.

Yet Canada had far and away a more stacked lineup, and plenty of those guys also waxed OV and Malkin in 2010 OG and/or won Gold again in Sochi ( although they never played RUS )

Crosby, Getzlaf, Carter ( in 2014 ) , Richards ( in 2010 ), Bergeron, Shea Weber, Seabrook ( in 2010 ) Perry all won OG Gold, plus Gold at 2005 WJ's

And besides the aforementioned, that World Junior Dream team also had Phaneuf, and plenty of other future NHL notables...

Russia had one of its best WJ teams ever in 2005 ( team they had when the tourney was in Alaska was probably better ) ...YET in Grand Forks GMG they were totally Out Gunned on paper, and on the ice, by Canada!

Just came home from the game. What an unbelievable experience to watch Canada win Gold in my hometown. Incredible atmosphere. The hockey played was unbelievable these past two weeks.

Much respect to Russia for coming back and making it a game, but the fact of the matter is, they seriously lucked out in two of those goals they scored to make it 5-4. One puck went of Gauthier's skate and was a fluke goal, while another one was a terrible goal allowed by Fucale which trickled past him off his skate.

The Russians should be thanking the refs, because that boarding penalty that gave the Russians momentum by making it 5-2 against Virtanen, was a borderline call. The Russians got away with some penalties, while they in turn got 4 straight Power Plays in the Second and going to the Third, to steal the momentum.

Anyways, i thought Canada was a better team 5 on 5, and was the better team overall. I think they did let their guard down a bit after it was 5-1, but when it mattered the most in the Third Period, they did not break and played very good hockey until the end of the game. Congrats to my fellow Canadians. 6 years was way too long for a Gold Medal for our country. Glad to end the drought here in Canada's biggest city! :handclap:

which is why that guy's argument is invalid. Just because Russia didn't have a young superstar, doesn't mean they would have done any better.

Look at Canada's 2006 WJ team. Basically nobody who played significant minutes had became a star at the NHL level, lots of 3rd line and middle pair.

But won Gold and beat a 19 year old Malkin lead Russian team 5-0 in the GMG.

In general, Russian society is rather blunt and direct. People are more apt to speak their minds, give criticism, or tell people off. Unfortunately this often comes across as arrogant, impolite and rude to other cultures.

Obviously its a huge oversimplification, but it tends to explain why a bunch of adrenaline fueled Russian teenage hockey players (with patriotic sentiment) taunt opponents more than players from other places do (especially North Americans who have a 'hockey code' that strongly prohibits such actions).

When did Sweden taunt at the blue line postgame?

Years from now, when I think back to this gold medal game, what I'll remember the most is that shift by Darnell Nurse.

The goals felt great, but that battle for the puck... It was beautiful.
