Congrats Team Finland and Val Filppula!

Finland record since 2019 is quite astonishing. Bratislava 2019 (Gold), Riga 2021 (Runner-up), Beijing 2022 (Gold) and Helsinki 2022 (Gold). That's no fluke. I think it's fair to say that Finland is the modern powerhouse of international hockey.
Thanks, at least a powerhouse for country with a population of 5,5M

That challenge was not done by Jalonen, it was reviewed by the referees themselves. Hence no penalty. Chabot got an identical penalty as Filppula did earlier: if you don't want a penalty, don't put your stick between another players legs.

And how about the vicious crosscheck to Heiskanen that led to him jolting the net with his face. I guess that was ok as it wasn't favoring Finland...
This post is almost as embarrassing as the dive taken in OT.

I've been reading the comments now for one hour and it has been hilarious. I don't mind Canadians blaiming the refs, it just shows the importance of winning and the devastation of losing.

Yeah pretty much. Refs are just human and will make mistakes. All countries have faced massive disadvantages due ref mistakes. It's fine to be upset and blame the ref, it's something that's always been part of this sport since the beginning. Just don't act like you don't care about the tournament and how winning didn't even matter, when you keep spamming multiple posts with long paragraphs about it. You obviously care.

Iihf wc is nothing to be taken too seriously, it's just a fun short tournament. Small things can make a big diffence, unjust calls, misses calls, injuries, lucky bounces. It's just one tournament, just one game (with 3v3 ot and shootouts) and should be taken as such and not as an indicator who is the better hockey country or anything.

No matter if it's the Olympics, WHCs or WJCs, losing is a non-option for Canada. They usually win it all, last year for example but now it was our turn.

Canada were the only team that could come back in a minute while being down 3-1. On the other hand Finland showed their strength to forget it and win it on overtime.

Two best teams in the final for sure. See you next year, in a new tournament.

Unfortunately the WHCs are the best tournament we have had for the last 6 years, 8 years arguably. This is still a very difficult tournament to win and it feels so rewarding. It is always difficult to win three games in a row to win the gold.
Time for IIHF and co to finally organize a proper best on best. Hockey fans deserve it

Congats to Finland on the Gold and congrats to canadian fans for showing their true colors, feel bad for those Canadian fans who stay classy however the majority of them didn´t. So wearing any kind of leaf makes you a crybaby loser? i guess it is that they used to have hockey. Now they have nothing. Prairie tho, eh??
Talks about having class then follows it up with this post. The irony is rich. Enjoy it Finland, as you'll never actually win a true best on best so these wins are your pinnacle.

They earn way too much money to do that. As long as the Euro-bills keep flowing in this will be a yearly tournament.
unfortunately you're probably 100% right. but a guy can dream.

make it more special and make it shitloads more entertaining. i bet it wouldn't take long for it to become more attractive to more of better players.

Starts with moving this to every second year and making the small rink size default.
The small rink size is already default, it was just an exception going with the hybrid size this year as the secondary venue in Helsinki could not have the small rink size. If the group would've been played in Hartwall Arena/Helsink Halli as planned, the small rink size would've been used.

once I heard Don Cherry say that "a European captain would never win the stanley cup."

Was entertaining game and as a Fin I was prepared for devastating loss on OT but got really happy with the win. I feel shamed of some discussion seen in this thread, why we can't be civilized when we win. Why some of us want to be pricks and rub it. I enjoy hockey win or lose, more when winning but games like this bring me back again and again. It wasn't greatly officiated game that is for sure but calls went both ways IMHO.
Looking past refs both sides gave best effort and can be proud of themselves. For Finland the path to final was guite difficult so we appreacite this really much.
And it is always David vs. Goliath when against Canada whatever people say.

Loved watching CAN NHL stars (PLD, Barzal, Chabot, even Lowry) in these games as it brings totally new challenge for mostly European based teams (playerpool).

Some really classy fans both sides so not trying to generalize this.

Next year it is again same thing, everyone has a chance to pave their way to the gold.

Maaayne, I'm hungover from the celebrations last night. It was crazy packed. One big family.

What I can remember from the game, good match, super tight. Refereeing was pretty good aswell, only big mistake was canadas second goal. Heiskanen(?) got crosschecked in to the post. Yeah and Björninen embellished that OT penalty. Which I'd rather not see, that's not part of hockey IMO. Overall fair play, better team won.

And if we'll win it wouldn't count because Canada would win it in best of 7 series of course.

But a quick reminder u20's and u18's are close being best on best and Finland have won a good portion of those.

didn't even know this game was on until I saw it on the top of the hfboards homepage. was surprised that team even got to the later knockout stages

Canada won last year? neat! ah of course they did because Connor Brown, Mangiapane, and Henrique were on the team

Seems overall horrid officiating with fans complaining about a lot of stuff on both sides, shameful for a final really. I didn't watch the game, and highlights don't show anything. I only saw this self-high-stick on ig, not a great look there.

Grats Finland for winning at home, big bounce back from the Czechs too. 👏

You've been saying this same thing since yesterday, for a guy who doesn't care/follow international hockey you seem to care a lot.
