Softy of the night is a dead heat. Two stoppable goals that looked very similar, both get the softy of the night.

Cole Caufield goal on Elvis Merzlikins

Jimmy Vesey goal on Ville Husso

Both pretty easy rebounds that the goalie had in their chest or glove and just slowly rolled out. Not sure one was any worse than the other. Maybe the one on Elvis was slightly worse, as it was more of a muffin shot? The initial shot on Elvis was also much closer than the initial shot on Husso.

Bleedred, what were your thoughts about Schmid's play in last night's game against Philly? My thoughts were that he played well. I also wonder why he has been sitting on the bench. How long will we wait before he is in another game? To gain experience, he must play in NHL games.

Believe it or not, I would start him tonight against San Jose. That would mean playing back-to-back; doing so would build his confidence.

His play would take the pressure off Vitek. Maybe he would make some extraordinary saves when the defense fails.

I was thinking out loud.

Softy of the night is this Zach Hyman goal on Connor Hellebuyck

ESPN doesn’t have video for it, instead they have the Draisaitl goal also under the video listed as the Hyman goal, as well as the actual Draisaitl goal.

It’s the goal that made it 1-1 late in the 3rd period. It was awful.

I didn’t like the second goal. I’ve nailed Blackwood on that too many times. He probably shouldn’t have been screened on that. It was a really harmless shot and the guys screening him were from well out.

But Blackwood was allowing a goal like that every 1-2 games.

They need to keep playing him. Vitek is broken here due to last playoffs. It won’t get better for him.

If Ruff was the one making the decision to play Vitek as much as he did last month then the goalie coach Rogalski needs to go right to Fitz and say “I had nothing to do with this decision. Akira should be playing more” because Vitek’s play last month is liable to get multiple people fired if they don’t wise up and discontinue the bullshit.

Is it reasonable to punish Schmid for Blackwood's sins? That's a whole new level of retribution, even for you.

Second goal.

That one where he was screened, but probably shouldn’t have been. It was a harmless shot and he really shouldn’t have been screened on it.

It was very Blackwood-esque.
So a screened goal would be considered stoppable? Legit asking, not messing around here.

Just seemed more fluky than stoppable to me.

I don’t think that should have screened him is the probably.

I am not so forgiving on screens that are from that far out. If there’s a body or bodies directly in front of the goalie I’m not giving him a stoppable goal for it.

The screen was downtown on that one.

And yeah, it definitely was a bit fluky.

Breedred I enjoyed the read. I respect your opinion like other at this forum. I do think you are too tough on Vitek. Let me tell you why I feel that way. He was hired as a bad up goalie. Last season he gave the Devils a terrific regular season but the coaching did not take into consideration that he was only a backup goalie. They overplayed him burnt him out as they approached the Playoffs. They expect this back up goalie to start playoff games as a playoff started. NO WAY that happens look at his history. Not let's go to this season. The Devils played with the defense to improve the offense in the off-season. IMO we started with a stronger offense, a weaker defense and a burned out weaker set of goalies. Not the formula for winning without the chips falling perfectly. IMO Vitek has had some bad games but not the number that fans ate talking about. Many goals are being scored because the defense is sucking in front of Vitek. Vitek takes the loss and loses confidence, the coaching staff is afraid to play Schmid for fear of a loss early on so they keep playing Vitek without tightening up the defense with the rest of the other 21 players. That's a coaching problem not a Vitek problem. Over play, poor defensive play in from of him is a formula for what we have gotten from this year's Devils to date

My opinion Fitz should have been beating in Ruff, play it down the ladder in the coaching staff and the other 21 players. It was like jump starting the offense without thinking about defense. We all know Championship games are won with defense. Defense includes the 4 defensive players, the two goalie and the entire set of offensive players.

In all sports defense wins first. Show me a team without defense and I will show you a loser. The goalie is NOT the only player called Defense

I am done stop me from beating the horse.

Lets Go Devils
Lets Go Schmid and Vitek we can do this with help from the others playing better defense if you are a defensive play and playing some defense if you are an offensive player.

Later

Bleedred, I forgot to mention when your offensive stars are out with injuries all the more time to play defense. Coaching Problem. Win by one only goal 1-0

Softy of the night is this Christian Fischer goal on Jake Allen

I haven’t seen a goalie look this clueless on a goal this season. That thing was laying there at his pad for so long he could have covered it multiple times. And I think it was in the back of his net before he even knew where it was.

Softy of the night is this Artemi Panarin goal on Mackenzie Blackwood

This was an absolutely brutal goal and came at an awful time.

You couldn't be more wrong. Blackwood is setting up Panarin for a later game where Blackwood will again purposely bobble the puck and let it lay flat on the ice right in front of him but at the last minute he will freeze it but Panarin will have aggressively skated into Blackwood taking an ill timed goalie interference penalty. Zetterlund will score on the ensuing power play assisted by both Okhotyuk and Mukhamadullin. San Jose will go from 32nd overall in the standings to 31st overall with this big season defining win. Blackwood is playing chess while everyone else is playing red rover.
