There were too many bad softies last night to just give one. Especially from a few of the MAIN SUSPECTS. So we’re gonna do an April FOOLS softy of the night because the goalies looked like absolute FOOLS on these

Lucas Raymond on Mads Sogaard

This is a hell of a softy for your first goal against in the NHL. Really thought this was gonna be softy of the night, because I kind of forgot Grubauer and Smith were happening later.

Pavel Buchnevich on Mike Smith

I was gonna say maybe he Jon Gillies allow a wraparound goal in person from the bench a couple weeks ago when the Oilers played us, but who am I kidding? It’s Mike Smith and this what you get from Mike Smith, particularly these last few years.

Brayden Schenn on Mike Smith

Just more vintage, leaky Mike Smith.

But wait! There’s more!

Gerry Mayhew on Karel. Vejmelka

Yes, Vejmelka is very good….. Too late for April Fools joke? Guy sucks so much. Pathetic goal. Embarrassing goalie. He’s nothing but a symptom of Gillies Syndrome and other Devils goalies Syndrome when championing this lousy BUM!

Jack Eichel on Philipp Grubauer

Just horribly played by Grubauer. I guess this is only because he plays on an expansion team though?

Shea Theodore on Phillipp Grubauer

“Wah! Wah! That’s not a soft goal! It’s an odd man rush allowed by a terrible expansion team!”. This isn’t worth a softy of the night, but it’s stoppable goal #50 of the year from Grubauer and that deserves some recognition. 54 would be my record for a season, but that’s only because I’ve only done this one other 82 game season so far, due to the last two pandemic shortened seasons.

Softy of the night is this Nikolai Ehlers goal on Cal Petersen

I don’t know, this one just stuck out as looking really bad to me. Andersen gave up a goal a lot like this to Zuccarrello though.

Yeah Daws looked terrible on the 1st Pageau goal. Make the shooter earn that or get beat on a pass/tap in play. We see this all too often. Palms shot. Not bad but, again. Stoppable. Season can't end soon enough.

Softy of the night is this Artem Zub goal on Thomas Greiss

Says it deflected, but the deflection was from so far out and it looks like it pierces Greiss right through his chest or stomach in the live clip. That’s how bad it was. It goes 5-hole on the replay.

Like Mike Johnson (I think that’s him calling this game) says in the clip “this is a stoppable puck”.

I’m glad to we see eye to eye on the two goals I gave him a stoppable goal on.

Yup, it was definitely the first goal of the game and the Palmieri goal that I gave him stoppable goals on.

The first Pageau goal was a breakaway, but it’s shot through the 5-hole. This wasn’t even a deke and the goalie is hardly moving. He’s not really sliding at he gets beat. On a deke I don’t mark that stoppable. It’s a breakaway so I can’t fault the goalie, but to say you can’t give a goalie a goal stoppable on a breakaway is right up there with saying you can’t give a goalie a stoppable goal for anything that Ovechkin scores. Goalies make saves on 86% of his shots. Goalies make saves on breakaways too. To say special exceptions need to be made for certain shooters is asinine. You can make special exceptions by not shredding a goalie too badly for allowing a goal to Ovechkin or Matthews, (same with a breakaway) but to say it can’t be marked stoppable (or a breakaway) is bullshit.

There was at least one other breakaway goal yesterday that I counted stoppable. Maybe even two, now that I think about it. One was on Oettinger late in the Dallas/Seattle game. Goes under Oettinger’s arm.

I can’t remember what other breakaway goal I counted stoppable yesterday, but maybe it was even the night before. I watch all of these the night of and keep the results in my notes, then wait to post them the next day. I’m usually in bed by the time the games end for the night. I’m still up and posting but I don’t feel much like typing out a long post, so I wait until morning.

Softy of the night is this Johnny Gaudreau goal on Calvin Petersen

This one was just horrific. First of all Petersen gave it away and then he gets beat not even through little daylight in the post, but just throws it at his feet and gets it in. I don’t think we’re gonna see too many goals worse than this over the remaining 3.5 weeks of the season, but we might see a couple.

Softy of the night is this Radko Gudas goal on Erik Kallgren

This is easily a top-10 softy of the year. What a terrible goal to allow. From the blue line, no deflection, no screen, not a one timer.

I already rented about this goal last night in the out of town scoreboard thread, but this is like worse than Claude Lemieux on Hextall, outside of the fact that it wasn’t in a playoff game.

The shot is going probably 90 to 95 mph. To us mere mortals we can't stop that but, yeah that's a softie.

Well, he did apparently leave the game injured just minutes after allowing this goal, so maybe he wasn't feeling well before this one went in.

I’m gonna need to graph Markstrom’s stoppable goals against this year, it’s been bad lately.

f***!

I just spent 20 minutes looking up data and finding my numbers on Markstrom going back to 18-19, which is the first year I did this. I hit post reply and nothing. That's the second time this has happened today (lucky it wasn't a long post the first time) and the second time in the last two or three days. And I'm not even on mobile.

Anyway, 18-19 I had 27.71% of Markstrom's goals stoppable (46/166). That was probably a bit better than average, as was his .912% save percentage in 60 games a bit above average.

19-20: 22.22% of Markstrom's goals stoppable (26/117), that was WAAYYYYYY better than my league average. His .918% in 43 games was considerably above the league average as well.

20-21: 27.92% of Markstrom's goals stoppable (31/111), which I think was just a little bit better than my league average which I think was a little higher last year than the other 3 years at about 29.3%. His .904% save percentage in 43 games was a bit below league average though.

21-22: 31.40% of Markstrom's goals stoppable (38/121), that's quite a bit worse than my league average which I think is about 28.2% this year. Though his .924% save percentage in 56 games is VERY GOOD.

This is the highest percentage of goals I've had him down as stoppable in those 4 years, but it's also his best save percentage season too. I feel like there are deviations every year. Guys who have a better save percentage, but have a high percentage of goals stoppable from me, like Sorokin on the Islanders, Anton Forsberg this year in Ottawa. Then there's some guys that have a lower percentage of goals stoppable, but their save percentages are in the toilet, like John Gibson the last 3 years lol and Korpisalo like EVERY YEAR!

My personal belief is that Markstrom underachieved last year and isn't as bad as he was last year, but I think he's probably overachieving a little this year in save percentage and not as good as he is this year. Probably somewhere in the middle. I'd say the over/under on what I'd expect his save percentage to be next year is proabbly .915%. Somewhere between .912%-.918% but not out of the question to be somewhat higher or lower than any of those numbers. His career average is .912%, but that includes his time with the Panthers, where he clearly wasn't NHL ready/NHL caliber yet, but got played in the NHL anyway and actually looked like a bust until he was about 25-26.

Last year was his first below average year in save percentage since his first two years in Vancouver, where he played a combined 278 minutes over 2 seasons. Clearly just a down year for him. This year may be a bit of an up year, but I expect probably a .915% (give or take a few on either end) next year.

Oh my

So Grubauer, who already hit 50 goals stoppable in his last game played, gets a shutout.

Merzlikins explodes for 3 goals stoppable tonight and is at 49.

What once looked like a pretty easy stoppable goal Jennings Trophy win for Grubauer, barring an injury, is now not looking so wrapped up for Grubauer. And the fact that Merzlikins plays every game with Korpisalo out for the remainder of the year.

Grubauer still has the higher percentage of goals stoppable by quite a bit. So he can still win the stoppable goal Vezina, but Koskinen (and Smith but Smith don’t have nearly as many games played to qualify) is still right there with Grubauer for that dubious award.

Goals against review for the April 7th, 2022 games

Canadiens vs Devils: 4 goals against Allen, 1 stoppable. 6 goals against Hammond, 2 stoppable. 1 goal against Daws in relief, 1 stoppable.

Predators vs Senators: 2 goals against Saros, 1 stoppable. 3 goals against Forsberg, 1 stoppable.

So that's 55 goals scored on goalies, 15 are stoppable. That's 27% of the goals scored were stoppable. Combined save percentages were .909%.

Softy of the night is this Joel Armia goal on Andrew Hammond

I’m only giving him the softy of the night for this one because he ducked out of the way. His positioning was horrible and he even looked like he missed it with his glove. Screen is really not an acceptable justification of this goal. His glove was Gillies levels of horrible on both goals I marked stoppable.
