EXACTLY. Dorion told Melnyk a lot of things about the rebuild with promises of success resulting in FYOUS. Dorion failed to deliver. Now he paints the team he assembled in rosy terms: The rebuild is over; we have acquired the new core.
Do you really think Dorion sells Melnyk on anything

hahah no way. He says he doesn't do it because it undermines the authority of the coach (wtf?). Seems like Dorion is projecting if that story is true.

I tend to agree with that as the DR is the coaches’ domain; however, when the team does not perform as expected or hoped for (delusional thinking), then a word from the GM may be required to break the funkiness.

I don’t think we know yet whether Dorion failed to deliver or not. Obviously this season hasn’t gone well but there’s still a ton of promise for the future. Dorion has to surround this team with better pieces going forward, there’s no question about that, but he’s also not wrong that we have a lot of pieces in place in the org — you can’t accelerate their development, so it is a matter of patience to a certain degree.

PD get on our FA,Paul,Norris etc...No more last min deals ,if Zub hasnt signed an extension by the begining of next season then we need to move him, while he has some termWe can no longer afford to bleed good talent for magic beans any longer

I agree with this. I hope he wasn’t serious about us having enough picks - it’s better to acquire more and use them as trade chips later than to lose guys for nothing at a time where we aren’t competing for anything.

The bridging of Mark Stone directly led to us ,to not receive a proper return on a all star winger...So a player like Zub that is a for sure top 4 RHD making 2.5 mil, would have huge value...Saying this we need to know his intentions and either get him signed or move him for the highest return possible...Ditto for guys like Paul,Brown ETC

I agree that the team has some very good players/prospects (Tkachuk, Stutzle, Batherson, Norris, Chabot, Zub, Sanderson, Thomson) but it also has some not so good players (J. Brown, MDZ, White, Tierney, Watson, Mete). I think the team still requires some #1 line talent (2 offensively skilled payers to play with Stutzle) and a #1 RD; in order to move players down the roster where their skills match their positions. The goaltending needs to improve too.

Yes, patience is required and has been provided over several years already.

Hopefully the team will get a top 3 pick at the 2022 draft to add to its offensive capabilities.

However, I have no confidence in Dorion being the GM going forward. We need an experienced and competent GM to manage the team better.

So many pieces to trade - zero results. Failed to get even one top six forward prospect. Who could complement now Stutzle on his wing. Looks like Dorion does not sleep well at night, because he is waiting by the garbage bin, where they dump freshly expired stuff from the league.

You know Dorion needs to be promoted to a scouting job and real GM brought in. Problem is with Dorion here or gone is going to be EM and McGuire picking the next GM!

That scares me!

Another budget or recycled GM to run this team is not what we need. Between two of them they probably would hire Bowman or Benning. That or we promote from within and not sure that is the answer either to be honest. If Trent Mann or MacTavish we're guys to be trusted they would have stopped Dorion from his UFA crazy signings.

If you go back to his season-ending press conference from April of 2019, Dorion issued a very interesting projection for the timeline for this team.
“The worst is behind us and we as a hockey group feel passionate about that. I know there have been some tough times, but we feel the good times are ahead,” Dorion said on April 9, 2019. “Next year, we need to start contending for the playoffs. Two years from now we need to be a playoff team. Three years from now we need to be a team that contends in the playoffs. And those are the words from the general manager. It has to be like that.”
Based on that answer, this was Dorion’s timeline for how things should have played out in Ottawa:
2019-20: Start contending for playoffs
2020-21: Be a playoff team
2021-22: Be a team that contends in the playoffs
Well, we’ve arrived into Year 3 of the above-stated plan and I’m not sure this team has reached the intended target that was laid out for Year 1.
But when you’re constantly changing the messaging — and then sitting in last place in December — you’ll forgive us for having a touch of short-term cynicism mixed in with our long-term optimism.

Teams with better records making changes because they actually have standards and can’t stand losing as much as the local team does.

Well they were also expected to make the playoffs and even win a round or two.

when this teams expectations are win in the playoffs and we are dead last people will get fired (other than the season we decided a tear down mid season)

Expectations for us should at least be to be better than last year.
