« Karlsson’s size was the topic when Murray and Pierre Dorion - then the Senators’ director of player personnel - discussed what they were going to do with the pick. Murray was skeptical about Karlsson’s size. Dorion remembered Murray saying, ‘You know I like big bodies.’ Dorion pleaded his case, saying this would be the best pick for the long-term benefit of the club.

Murray finished off by asking Dorion, ‘How long do you want to work for me?’

Dorion answered, ‘A long time, but I know this is the right pick.’

100 Things Senators Fans Should Know & Do Before they Die, Chris Stevenson, Triumph Books, 2018, page 102.

Really fun book. Totally worth the investment.

Even if Forsberg was the boots on the ground scout, the scouting buck stopped with Dorion. Dorion didn’t have to pound the table like he did and put his head on the chopping block, with a direct question like « how long do you want to work for me? ». He did put his head on the block and he was right.

Realistically, if Dorion answers that question « well… this is the guy Forsberg recommends » do the Sens trade up? Probably not.

He deserves credit for having stepped up and pounded the table.
Cool snippet, is the book filled with these gems?

Dorion is a yes man, not anything new. The scouts could have told him to draft Boro in the first round and he’d do it.

Is that a bad thing ? He’s almost played 500 games in the nhl.

Of the top of my head amongst our d selected in the first round the last 10-15 years they feels like 3rd? EK, Ceci, ?

Can Dorion move Murray if given the chance ? Dorion and DJ will be on the hot seat to start the season. A slow start will probably be their end.

It’s a risky move for Dorion to tie his future to Forsberg and Gus.

Hard to imagine a man handling it with more ease; The list does seem to be growing however

I'd wait until the trade deadline to move Brown, they may be able to get a lot more for him unless they get a great offer for him now. They should have a few UFAs to trade at deadline with C. Brown, Watson, Holden, Hamonic, MDZ & Zub who I hope they keep. This could be one of the best UFA crop of players they have had to trade in a while. We should be looking to make a deal to acquire one of Arz late 1st rd picks.

Might be better now from an optics perspective though. If the team is hanging around the playoff race, it would be very difficult to sell Brown/Zub trades to the fanbase and there's risk of losing them for nothing.

I doubt the Sens want picks for Brown, so it’s probably better to trade him now. You can potentially move him for a more expensive player that a team can’t afford for cap reasons - if we’re willing to retain that makes him even more valuable.

If management is worried about optics then they are doing it wrong. Do what you think will make the team better, take the optic "hit" because no one will care if it works out.

Hard to feel very positive.

We need to add 3-4 good players WITHOUT losing any of our existing good players. But it's sounding like that's not going to happen.

We'll acquire a top 6 forward but lose Brown.
Sanderson will become a solid top 4 D but we'll lose Zub.

At the end of the day, while the trade-offs may make us slightly better, they're not vaulting us into contention.

If we trade #7 for Fiala but get rid of Brown, we're not much further ahead than we were last year. We'll have 1.5 good lines and ice crap for 35 minutes of each game.

It's also troubling that a team that's loaded with cap space and, apparently, has such a bright future that will start next season, can't convince Connor Brown, a lowkey guy who spends offseasons in Etobicoke, to re-sign. I thought all our players had fully bought in to what Pierre and DJ are selling?

Zub needs to be extended

Brown should be also.

We have to make it work long term with cap dollars or we get into issues.

Need White, Zaitsev, Murray off the books so we use that money players who are useful.

Brown possibly leaving , right on the cusp of this team looking promising, is just another backwards step that prolongs the agony around here. Brown is the type of player you need to win and go deep, and even with all those minutes given to him by DJ, sad to think he actually believes he is worth more to any other team than to a team coached by DJ Smith

We are likely 3+ years from our peak years, plenty of time to develop someone else into that role. Brown probably knows his best years are taking place now and wants to win when he can be a strong contributor.

We're going to have an excellent third line assuming Pinto stays healthy. We have an excellent top line. Our second line needs someone / something to click but there are options internally whether it is Formenton, Joseph or Connor Brown for now. It will be fine. All our young core will be one year more developed and thus one year closer to their prime, that includes 4 guys that are near ppg players and a very good PP1. Our D will be better with Brannstrom ready to break out, Sando entering the league and a full season of Hamonic instead of Brown or Mete. In net hopefully we have found our starter in Forsberg.

Every year of development means a lot to a young team like this and this upcoming year, assuming we stay healthy, is when it is hammered home how much talent this team has. I don't quite understand how we can overlook how the progression of the team we have now, simply through maturity and figuring things out, isn't going to make us significantly better.

Somehow with all the potential deals out there we have lost sight of the fact that this team has a ton of talent on it's own and will be just fine if it marinades for one more season. I want some reinforcements but I also trust in this core to begin meeting expectations as is. All signs are pointing that way, we just need to figure out how to play .500 hockey to start the season.

It seems like every year there is another player pushing that I’m stoked on. Grieg, Kleven, Boucher, JBD, Tompson, Ostapchuk, Sokolov, Jarventie, Soogard are all young players that I’m pretty stoked on. I think these guys all have a good chance to be NHLers at least.

We’ll have another couple high pucks this year to add as well (hopefully) so we should be seeing quality kids pushing to make the team for several years to come already.
