Not mutually exclusive. They got lucky, plus their GM is doing good work picking out his targets.
We can't complain .. with where we picked thru the rebuild.. other than losing a 4OA trying to extend the 2017 run and blowing almost an entire draft in 2021 and giving up picks for poor players to fill in the roster and then trying to rush it.

Multiple first overall and second overall contributed to that obviously.
obviously = needless to say

Nice job... I suspect this is very close. ... So we can expect things to be deafeningly quiet until Dorion finds a trade partner for DeBrincat.
Having Norris and Chychrun will help but the depth would kill us if we manage to scrape into the playoffs. Looks like someone else will have to deal with it after this year.
I think you are correct that things will be quiet until something happens with DeBrincat - they can't commit to anything else until that's dealt with. In a way the Sens are highly incentivized to have DeBrincat off the roster by July 1st so they can at least attempt to address their goaltending and depth problems.

With DeBrincat in the fold you are essentially just running it back with last year's team. You have all the same problems - very vulnerable to injuries in the top-6, no functional depth and unreliable goaltending. Most likely another year of no playoffs.

Yup in some ways we retroactively won the lottery in 2020 getting the 3rd overall and drafting Stutzle. NJ GM has made smart moves along the way too…Dorion’s moves haven’t worked and just haven’t been aggressive enough, and whatever the reasons, he’s always left to clean up his own mess.

Really hope Andlauer is bringing his own regime

Yup we got the best player from one of the best drafts in recent years (Stü in 2020) out of pure luck. We win that lottery and we're watching Lafreniere. Not bad but we've got the better player.

Tkachuk is also a top 3 from his draft.

The problem isn't who we've got at the top of the draft, it's everything else we've done.

Dorion really has 1 Asset to deal .. Sure he could try to pawn off others but 1 of any consequence.

How many times do you think he has contacted every GM to discuss moving his 1 Asset:?

I imagine a few GMs sitting around having a cold beverage before the draft and the phone rings at the table... It's Dorion. I'd love to see the reaction.

He's probably exhausted Ryan Bowness calling in his stead.. Hi George its Ryan Bowness calling... hang on a sec Pierre wants to talk to you.

Everyone else discussing picks and roster players and moving up or down and they are busy with preparations... and the phone rings.

Horrid asset management. A masterclass of what not to do.

NJD GM is doing work

Signed Meier and got toffoli

I hope Dorion is taking notes on how to speed up a rebuild
Seems like Dorion has been doing the same thing as the Devils.

2 summers ago the Devils made a huge splash, acquiring Hamilton, Graves, Tatar, locking down Hughes for 8 years a year early. The Devils then went on to have a horrible season, only getting 64 points thanks in part to an injury to their #1C among others and lackluster goaltending. But, advanced stats showed they underperformed alot, and were primed for a big jump the following year.

Something that was mentioned in today’s radio hit with Dave Poulin was that WPG GM and PLD’s agent had a really good relationship and that helped to facilitate a trade with lots of value. Would be interesting to see if something similar happened with Tkachuk.

All we’re hearing now is Dorion and DBC’s agent don't have the best history and then see shots fired by his mouthpiece Garrioch on how the agent needs to do better…smh.

This is why Dorion sucks. Just does not know how to properly maximize value and doesn’t appear to work with any finesse

DBC’s agent was Connor and Logan Brown’s agent. Logan and his camp hated the Sens, even though he was grocery stick.

That’s a good point, even though Logan should be looking in the mirror, St Louis isn’t bringing him back, either

I agree with you regarding making moves; free agents/trades, but those bastards won multiple draft lotteries. That's what kickstarted their rebuild.
I mean we got Stuztle Tkachuk and Sanderson as really really good peices who probably go higher in the redraft. Dorion has done good there. He still really struggles with these soon to be UFA and trades which is what you need to be good at to polish off the rebuild.

trading for Toffoli and signing Meier is just really good business

Apparently Oster and Dorion have a solid relationship, not sure what you’re on about. We have literally already benefited from it.

My point wasn’t about Dorion’s whole tenure but rather when there is a time to maximize value, Dorion does not seem to work well. He created the Stone situation, and chooses to battle in the media whenever he wants (and is seemingly doing just that with Debrincat) while others work quietly behind the scenes and get shit done.

I don’t see what purpose yesterday’s comments served and what BG calling out DBC’s agent does other than publicly confirm they got no tangible offers

Did we end up getting a pick in this draft? You seemed so certain we'd get a pick.

Permission to complain, bitching police officer?

The 2023 draft hasn't happened yet. So you're pre-bitching?
6 year scorched earth rebuild, only 3 of our own picks.
Given up pick number 4 for a guy that stayed 1.5 years
Given up pick number 7 (++) for a guy that's played 1 year here and already has his feet out the door
Given up pick 12 (++) for a guy that's under control for 2 years.

Our prospect pool is what I'd expect from a team that's been a Stanley Cup contender for many years and we haven't made the playoffs.

It really was a sobering night for the Dorion train.

- Basically admits the offers for Debrincat suck
- Announces that he recommended DJ comes back as HC
- Teams like Buffalo stacking up their prospect pools while also having promising NHL rosters like the Sens
- Now we find out that his top UFA target is...Korpisalo

Can't give him credit for Stutzle, that was pure luck. SJ horribly underachieved that season and their pick won the lottery too, no one was expecting it to be so high when it was acquired. Plus LA did us a huge favour by selecting Byfield with their 2OA, making Stutzle the obvious and clear choice for us at 3rd. That selection has nothing to do with Dorion, it was pure luck. Full credit for the Sanderson and Tkachuk picks tho, those required far more discretion on his part and he made the correct calls there.
