Line Combos: GM/Coaching criticism

Acquiring a Foligno wasn’t a mistake, acquiring a damaged goods Foligno, now that’s a terrible move for the price. We still don’t know, but returns so far suggest the latter.

I think Dubas has done a fantastic job rebuilding our defense. I think he's done a fantastic job at the drafting table. Finding Campbell was a brilliant move and solved our goaltending question. He overpaid the core, but it's not his fault that they (I'm mostly looking at Marner here) fail to deliver in the playoffs. How many young superstars fail in the playoffs? Not many, and I don't think it's his fault that he got the dud. I don't have a problem with Dubas trying one more year with this core, he did a great job fixing the most obvious issue in our defense and got us a goalie, that should have been more than enough. And giving up too early on 23 year old superstars would be the dumbest mistake in the history of hockey if it blew up in our faces. Trading Marner too early would make the Rask trade look like a steal in our favour. But if we lose this series it is clearly untenable and it's time for the big shakeup. I'm comfortable with Dubas being the one who shakes up the core. He's shown that he's not afraid to go big and get his guy. I have faith in that.

I literally do not care if we keep Keefe or not. He's been fine as coach and failed in others. Two coaches now have failed to motivate this team, a hard ass and a player's guy so again I think the issue is with a dud of a core. There's good decisions and bad decisions, and every coach in the league has those. I just don't see much of a case either way and I don't care. To me, it's all about the players. Keefe, keep him or not, is not the one holding them back. And if these guys need a magic unicorn coach to get them playing hard then it's a problem with the f***ing players.

Whoever manages the PP should be fired with all possible haste. I'd fire that guy right this instant if it were up to me, hire someone as a consultant for game 7.

I'm really interested to see what happens with him in the offseason given he has ties to the Leafs and really would be leaving on a lowpoint.

I wouldn't be shocked to see him re-sign and give it a go over a full season.

Not surprising, this thread was made by one of the bigger defenders of Babcock.
Anyways, this thread is way too early.

This post aged well

Fact of the matter is Keefe has been absolutely terrible this playoff series, in fact, worse than the play-in round last year when Torts completely schooled him.

And don't even get me started on Dubas.

Welp just when I was starting to enjoy Dubas, we find ourselves on verge of becoming the laughing stock of the league again.

I can't watch game 7, but really am hoping the boys pull through and the team which is a contender in all but mentality can continue the quest for the cup. End the 2004 curse. This is a good team, Dubas has done a good job, but we are in year 3 now and we need results from him and the players.

I’m just afraid management pulls the ol’ we didn’t have JT in the lineup get out core jail free card.
When seriously the 3 Amigos plus Rielly should be enough to win a 7 games series against the AHL Habs any day of the week.
ownership has to clean house regardless of the outcome of game 7 is. This team needs a heart transplant, and that's on everyone from the President on down.........

Leafs look like contenders on paper......in real life, not so much..........

5v5
Fogilno Matthews Nylander
Hymen Kerfoot Marner
Mik Spezza Engvall
Gally Brooks Simmonds

Split M&M
Promote Nylander n Spezza since they have a pulse.ose Thornton because he is just done.
Demote Gally because of poor puck decisions.

PP 1
Simmonds - Net
Spezza - Centre
Nylander & Matthews - Offwing Flanks
Brodie

PP2
Hymen - Net
Kerfoot - Centre
Marner & Matthews - offwing flanks
Muzzin/Sandin

Matthews plays full 2 like Ovi. Promote the players who have a pulse in Nylander n Spezza. Only Dmen with actual point shots. NO THORNTON. I like Simmonds in front more than Hymen.

One interesting tidbit, prior to start of this series, in practice Mitch was off the PK. It was discussed this might be done so he didn’t get tired and could focus on his line work. Fast forward to the series he’s tops in Pk forward time, and actually has been excellent there. Perhaps the coach is spreading him to thin, there are times he looks fatigued out there, I mean he gets no slack here but it’s something to consider.
Neither of them can skate. They’re starting their shifts tired. This is what happened last year against CBJ as well. Keefe is a terrible coach

So inspiring:

"It’s so hard in any sport to say that it’s X or bust. I know there’s a lot of talk about winning a playoff round or bust, or winning a Stanley Cup or bust, but I don’t, uh, I think those can be very day-to-day-type endeavours and I think especially in this role it has to be more long term and can’t get caught up in how the short-run results impact that, and it’s about trying to build a program that can be a team that has a high level or performance every single year …”

I just don’t understand how anyone can criticize Dubas for this.

We have two franchise centres. We needed defence he went a got us defence. We needed goaltending and he went and got that. We needed grit and he went and got that.

On paper this team is good. That’s all a GM can do.

Keefe and the players have failed. If we lose game 7 it all falls on certain players and coaches. We all know who they are.

Who pray-tell decides which players are on the active roster for the Leafs?
