Line Combos: GM/Coaching criticism

They are currently beating a bad team. Isn’t that what they’re supposed to do?

Yep. They have been built better and a better group behind the bench leading them and the on ice results reflect thaglt.

Some the more hyperbole overreactions after the first game (like this thread) were short sighted.

I think OP lost the plot with his very first point.

Habs aren't much of a measuring stick but it's pretty incredible how much better this team is in under 3 years of work by the kid.

They are certainly built better. We haven’t even seen many situations in which we can evaluate Keefe. At best, it’s been a mixed bag when we do see those situations.

I’ll wait for a larger sample size.

A larger sample is always a good thing. Though not sure I'd agree about the lack of opportunities to observe.

We've now seen 3 games in a row where the Leafs have been much tighter defensively and were able to adjust without missing a beat to losing Tavares and Folingo.

Credit where credit is due imo

I think our record under Keefe has been pretty good no? Much improved defensively among other things so not sure what to complain about (not saying you're complaining).

This season has been spent playing mediocre teams so in that sense the sample size against quality opposition is small, that is true IMO. But that's no reason to complain either, we'll see what happens when we get there.

We were supposed to win our division without too much trouble, that's done. Then we're supposed to win it again in the playoffs, so far so good. We haven't looked as good as I'd have hoped but considering everything, we're not off by much either. I expect us to beat MTL, then WPG and then we'll play a very good team and we'll find out a lot more about how good our team is. So far so good though, I'm very pleased.

I wonder what kind of dollars/term Jack gets? At this point it would be a big surprise if he didn't get a new contract this summer.

Keefer is making all da right calls .. as a former player with skill and toughness he understands both sides of game .. we can all disagree with some of his calls, and we always will, but he is making many more right calls than wrong ones .. he keeps things loose but he is determined to stay within his system .. he keeps close tabs on EVERY player on his squad and knows what each can bring to da party .. and he works well with Dubie and Dubie brought him da players he wanted .. that is what we needed as a tema all along unity ..

Pretty sure the leafs are a soft, choking team led by a GM that doesn't understand what it takes to win and his soft pet coach who are now beating the hell out of a deep, tough, built-for-playoffs team led by a GM that understands what it takes to win in the playoffs.

Leafs lead the series 3-1 and have given up a mere 4 goals against so far.

Looks like coaches and GM know what they're doing....

looks like they are playing Montreal ;)

all good. Getting out of this division is an expectation. So far so good.

In retrospect I'm a dummy for picking PIT to come out of the East. Oops. Got hoodwinked by the hot streak at the end there. It was always going to be a close series and if NYI wins its not an upset.

One legit horrible team made the playoffs - St.Louis. They only made it in because ARZ LA ANA SJS are always horrible too. They got whipped as expected.

WPG is also pretty bad but the difference is a) they have the best goalie in the world and b) the Oilers were also a below average playoffs team coming in. That still doesn't explain a SWEEP but the upset was not a huge one.

The biggest boner in the first round is Florida likely sabotaging themselves with moronic goalie decisions based on contract and "experience" and "starting goalie" label. Absolutely moronic and probably ruined their chances of beating a damn good team fairly and squarely. FLA was better than TB in the regular season and even with the return of kucherov have outplayed the Bolts in this series. They still have time to pull it out but TB knows how to close.

The Habs are not an awful team, though they're not very good either. The Leafs are making them look awful so far, though. Knock on wood fingers crossed don't let the leafs curse rise again but the Leafs are doing it right so far.

With Marner on the PK why not put Nylander on the Top PP? Spezza and Engvall deserve to be there too.

Engvall Net
Nylander left Flank
Spezza. Center
Matthews Right flank
Sandin. point

Xgf% for lines so far (min 5min):

1. Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Engvall (8:33): 100.0%
2. Mikheyev-Engvall-Simmonds (14:06): 84.0%
3. Hyman-Matthews-Marner (46:34): 73.3%
4. Thornton-Brooks-Spezza (8:33): 56.9%
5. Galchenyuk-Foligno-Nylander (8:44): 37.0%
6. Thornton-Spezza-Simmonds (12:44): 32.4%
7. Galchenyuk-Kerfoot-Nylander (15:50): 30.8%

Interesting so far, the top line and the mikky-engvall combo have been owning the ice for the team but haven't been scoring, while the Nylander lines and the Spezza lines have been scoring but not owning the ice so much.

I almost feel bad for Edmonton

I sometimes wonder if Babcock watches these games of the Leafs crisply leaving their zone with small, accurate, well organized passes - and wonders why the hell he was so obsessed with stretch passes.

The series is certainly unfolding how I thought it would (had the Leafs in 5).

A good lesson that folks shouldn't let one game shake their confidence in the team

What I was reading was that folks we’re upset they lost and played Marner 27 mins and quadruple shifted Matthews.

people still were confident/expected them to win.

I’m expecting to see them in Round 3 at a minimum.

it’s a talented roster on paper. No reasons not to be confident they can make it.

I think there's been a group of fans who have been pretty skeptical about this team/gm/coach over the season, so not sure I'd agree everyone has been on the same page about the team. Quite the opposite in fact.

I think the record is pretty good because roster is pretty good. We have yet to play a team that is even close to us on paper.

Beating teams that you're supposed to beat doesn't really tell you anything.

In the few situations that would actually tell you something about the coaching, it's been both good and bad.

No reason to complain, and no reason to gloat.

Most people should be happy. There are a few things I don't like, but the vast majority has been good. We've finally assembled a team that brings a multitude of different aspects. I like the mix.
