Well if Sather does retire at some point (I'll believe it when I see it) the new GM will have a built in 'Get out of Jail Free' card. Down the road people will always be able to point to the 2013, 2014 and 2015 entry drafts, where we had a grand total of one first round and one second round draft pick in three years, as to why the new GM's hands were tied when trying to rebuild the team.

And what we have to show for those draft picks is Rich Nash and his $7.8 million cap hit through 2017-18, a small number of games from Ryan Clowe, and this year and next year of Marty St Louis.

Sather had to sacrifice the future not as the last piece(s) to a Stanley Cup champion, but to fortify teams so they can fight for the last few playoffs spot every year. And maybe not even make the playoffs this year. Pathetic.

Thanks Glen. Leave. Now.

The organization got two prospects who are looking extremely promising already in the last draft. The 2014 draft didn't happen yet, and the 2015 draft is very far away. Many things can happen over the course of that much time. Most obviously, the team can trade roster players for picks as prospects come up, which isn't too crazy of a thought with 2 forwards and 2 dmen who are pretty close to the NHL currently in the A. I don't mean to justify the trading of all those picks, as many of them could/should have been kept (the Clowe ones most of all), but to write off the drafting of Buch and Duclair as an opportunity for a get out of jail free card is a bit much, and assuming that a draft more than a year from now will be shot is a huge stretch.

Again, you're jumping two years ahead of time and complaining about things that haven't even happened yet when you talk about what we "have to show for it" - Nash was two points behind Step for leading scorer last year, and this year he's leading the team in goals. I really don't think that 7.8 million is going to be a huge hit for a 30 goal scorer as soon as even next year. Clowe was a disaster. St. Louis has played a handful of games this season, and still has 82 games next season that you've already written off.

All this "sacrifice the future" talk is hyperbole, as is writing off Nash's contributions, and writing off the huge bulk of St. Louis' contributions that haven't even happened yet. Sather has made some boneheaded moves, and the sooner he's gone and the sooner (hopefully) Gorton is GM, the better, but this constant bemoaning of the team's situation by assuming that every future worst case scenario is going to come true is just nonsense.

Dolan doesn't seem to care that he's the biggest loser in NY sports history. Or, maybe his definition of winning isn't ours? But, my how those ticket prices have risen.

Which at the end of the day, ironically enough, makes him the winner doesn't it? If this is a business, and the goal is to make money, then no doubt Sather and Dolan might actually be the best in the business.

Is that really the standard that for a player that you gave up half your core and picks for, should be held to? That a $7.8 player was two points behind Derek Stepan? For what he is paid and what was given up for him, he should be one of the very best in the league.
I really don't think that 7.8 million is going to be a huge hit for a 30 goal scorer as soon as even next year.
What have his goal totals for the Rangers been? And yes, if all he does is score 30 goals, then at $7.8 he is grossly overpaid.
St. Louis has played a handful of games this season, and still has 82 games next season that you've already written off.
Sorry, but St. Louis does not get the benefit of a fittin gin period. At his price, and considering that lots of folks here consider him to be one of the very best in the league, he needs to make an instant impact. How has he benefitted this team so far?

Tell me about Nash's contributions. What have they been? And also tell me how MSL has mattered so far. The only way that the MSL trade is a winner is if they win the Cup.

Since he took over, how would you describe his personnel moves? What has been the typical result for the team on average during Sather's tenure?

The team made money before Dolan. The team made money before Sather.

Actually, the trades to sacrifice all those draft picks did happen already.

All this "sacrifice the future" talk is hyperbole, as is writing off Nash's contributions, and writing off the huge bulk of St. Louis' contributions that haven't even happened yet.

So you're jumping a year ahead of time and counting on things that haven't even happened yet.

Wouldn't they technically be the "second best in the business" then? After all, Toronto is the more valuable franchise and in 2012 they made $1M more in revenue than the Rangers did. I believe that gap increased a bit in the lockout year as well.

This. There is no other way to justify this trade. I don't care how good MSL is, you don't trade a 29 yo Callahan, a 1st and a 2nd for a soon to be 39 yo player.

To make a poker analogy, that's like going all in with nothing in your hand and only the River left to make something of it. By making this move, Sather has put us in win-now mode, and whether or not we win now, we are going to pay for it later.

'Has it been over 10 years already?" - Jim Dolan regarding Slats as Ranger GM

:shakehead

"Some of the trades he's made, wonder how he got the other GM to agree?" - Dolan on Sathers 'genius'

"We're in a playoff spot but I'm worried" - Jimmy

"We have a good team" - Jimmy

Same old same old song and dance.......

If only they were the best in the game.

Not the goal, I know.

As long as they keep acquiring mega-names every other season then the model keeps working.

The Garden made money when it was Gulf & Western,Paramount,Viacom,ITT/Cablevision and then just CVC.

Compare 1974-1994 to 1994-2014. How did the teams do on the ice? How did the front office approach team building?

Compare ticket price increases, annual revenue, the value of the New York Rangers.

Dolan runs the Rangers just like they always been run...at least in my lifetime. Dolan has the benefit of a changing NYC and he's maximizing revenue, in the time honored way. Big names attract big ticket price increases.

I almost drove off the highway into the Meadowlands when he said that. That one sentence sums up everything thats wrong with this franchise.

LaGreca knows 10X more about the franchise then its owner. Here we all are, the diehard fans obsessing over the tenure of our incompetent GM on a daily basis for years and the owner that hired him doesnt even know how long he's been with the club, and doesnt really know why he hired him to begin with.

****ing embarrassment.

And then the one time Dolan is on the airwaves talking about the Rangers, Kay cuts the interview short. So frustrating.

It pissed me off so much I called in to that show, called a sports radio show for the first time ever.

I compared Phil Jackson coming to the Knicks like Slats to the Rangers - lazy same old line of thought - throw money at the biggest name available. Now PJ is not the same as when we brought in a guy who failed for a good decade, but the mentality is the same, no outside the box thinking.

REAL genius is bringing in 'the next' Slats, 'the next' PJ, thats where the outside the box thinking has to come. IMO, HUNGRY guys make more of a dent in NY than the established names. Neil Smith was an up and comer and thirsty to prove his worth.

Totally agree. And some will argue that its not about the owner. Its all about the owner. It starts and ends at the top. Hes the one making the decision to keep Slats around and bring PJ in. How does he trust Slats 100%, when he didnt know anything about him when he hired him? How could you gain trust in someone who missed the playoffs for the first 7 years on the job?

Its just based off past reputation for Dolan. No forward or present thinking. Sounds like a familiar approach.

100% agreed. I didnt catch the press conference, but I could only imagine the hand-shaking and back-patting going on for what amounts to just another lazy Garden hire.

Hiring Phil Jackson in 2014 is akin to hiring Sather in 2000 -- 2 guys a decade+ removed from their professional primes.

Honestly I thought hiring Phil Jackson was a good move for the Knicks.

But it really is the same old song and dance. Find the biggest name, throw money, results? Same old BS that has Dolan's teams in oblivion.

I don't know though, Phil Jackson is about 2 tiers above Sather. He's one of the greatest basketball minds in history.

Not sure what you are getting at here.

Everything increased. Off course that also has to do with inflationary increases

Rangers made revenues before

All of the many successes of the team make it seem like only yesterday they were a laughingstock. And just look at them now

Yeah Slats wasn't too far from this kind of praise in 2000.

And I agree, PJ is a GREAT bball mind, but once that mind gets to NY, all sorts of **** goes wrong. And all I'm hearing is now that he's here the FA's will line up to play in NY. We'll see.....

We'll see if that great basketball mind is as great without the likes of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Shaq, and Kobe Bryant.

I'll be impressed if he can rescue a selfish Carmelo Anthony, a bunch of crap, and limited picks going forward.

This thread is depressing

I'm as negative as any, but according to some of you the team never has a chance in hell of winning anything, every move we make is horrible, the front office is clueless, etc.

Also, IIRC, Dolan didn't say "Its been 10 years already?" He said that he thinks its been more than 10 years, which it has.
