Why would making the playoffs matter?

I guess Sather wants to go "out on top" when the Rangers lose in the first or second round. Pretty close considering his crowning achievement is a conference finals loss to our bitter rivals.

I will throw a week long party when he retires, and you are all invited. But my fear is that it gets worse after he leaves. The owner is part of the problem too.

Sather is a lot more the problem than Dolan methinks. Dolan is busy ruining the Knicks. He just hires the top guy on the market, and tells him to build a winner with the Rangers. If he happens to hire the right guy, it could be great for the Rangers.

The problem with Dolan is that he is riding shot gun to Sather's culture of laziness.

But the day Glen is gone, we will really know how much of a problem Dolan is.

Even if Sather retired today, we would be dealing with the impact of his decisions for a decade.

imagine if Sather makes more of these deals by trading more depth and youth for another "star" player and then next year, and the Rangers lose in the 1st round, and Sather retires 3 weeks before the draft to **** up this organization. i can see it happening.

"Mission Accomplished"

i could have sworn that i read an article by Larry Brooks, that states that Glen Sather will be Rangers GM until he wins a Stanley Cup here or passes away, which ever comes first.

That was probably a nightmare you had.

This what Kyper reported in December

Kypreos said, “there isn’t much talk of Glen Sather and the Rangers moving forward, there is some talk about Bryan Murray getting an extension in Ottawa but how about the other 70 year old in New York. There is a lot of talk about whether he wants to go into next season as the general manager or will he relinquish some of that power. So yea, there is some speculation about some changes coming to New York.”

Is Sather giving up the GM reigns and remaining team president? Giving up the president and GM duties and remaining as a consultant or advisor to Dolan? Matheson makes it sound like Sather will/could retire and won't stay on in any capacity. The Rangers have had the GM also have the president title since 1992 when Smith was promoted from VP to President. What does a Rangers team president do? The Garden has business people to handle the business side of the Rangers. Executive VP or VP/General Manager is sufficient for the guy replacing Sather.

So he wants to make the playoffs in his final season so he doesn't look like a complete failure. It does tell us that he judges success purely on just making the playoffs. I guess even he knows that a Cup is not a possibility.

If slats retires today the rangers are still far from a cup contender... Hopefully we have the ability to do a quick retooling(like San jose) rather than a full on rebuild

Didn't someone post here over the summer saying they heard from a reliable source that Slats was gonna retire this summer?

There was the rumor WAY back that Sather wanted Burke to take over right after the lockout and Glen would slide into a President role. The story goes that Dolan refused letting Sather giving up the GM title, and thus he couldn't bring in his buddy Brian Burke (who at that time was just unemployed w/ the Canucks, and before being hired by Anaheim).

No mention in this entire thread of Sather's health issues/surgery this last year. Success on-ice aside, one has to take into account their own health as well.

And if does Sather does step-down or aside, I certainly hope Sather minions, Schoenfeld and Risebrough leave immediately.

That was me. A lot could have changed in a year, as my source lost his ears within the organization since then. Last September though, he strongly hinted that exactly this was being heavily talked about. Sather resigns from the GM post, but remains President, Gorton gets promoted to GM.

If the Rangers go outside the organization for the next GM, get ready for Brian Burke as your next Rangers GM.

Prototypical Dolan pick. Typical lazy, good 'ol boys club choice.

If he goes outside of organization he better figure out a way to get JD here

Wow this is the best news I have heard in a long time. We can only hope, and pray…….

If Sather retires, i want the hammer to come down hard on the rest of the organization.

I'd fire the coaching staff (again, Vigneault is too soft, and his team reflects that), hire a new GM, let the GM pick his staff. Drop the dead weight on the roster and the system.

Instill a new identity, core fundamental values on how this organization is going to conduct itself moving forward.

Top to bottom.

Clean house.

I loved Gorton but I'm afraid he and Clark spent too much time with Sather and its possible his **** rubbed off on them. Though, i also have a feeling they're sick of Sather's **** and would have this organization going in a different direction if it were their call right now. I feel Haggerty was all Gorton and Clark. Gorton kept talking about him.

I think we see Sather slowly begin to step away, but not entirely;

My guess is Sather remains President (for life) and Gretzky becomes the new GM.

Jeff Gorton drafted Milan Lucic 8 years ago, therefore he is the most qualified GM for the job.
